What I did was I drew southpark characters, then pokemon, then dragonball, then gundam, all along the way drawing my own stuff. I didn't realise it at the time but this was teaching me quite a bit of fundamentals. to draw better dragonball characters I looked at body builders, to draw my own pokemon I looked at animal encyclopedias, to draw my own gundam I looked at machines.
