So Copic itself is a brand. I'm not sure if it's the OG alcohol based brush marker, but it's basically the standard. I would have recommended Prismacolor last year if you didn't want to splurge on Copics, but I think they're discontinuing the line since I've been seeing them on major clearance at every art store. With that being said, you could easily get a good deal. I personally prefer Copics over all of the alternate brands (Ohuhu is my least favorite and I think they give Instagram/YouTube artists free sets for the good reviews because they kinda suck in person). If you want new, you can buy them for cheapest on Blick. After Christmas, you'll see a lot of sets for sale on sites like Mercari and that's where I got mine for a really good deal. I like that Copics are refillable, and they get a lot cheaper to use when you're refilling them. Other good Copic alternate brands I like are Kuretake and Tombow (make sure not to accidentally get their water markers). Hope this helps.

Ohuhu feels really nice and if you know how to blend and how to use colour, it can really make an artwork pop. I used Jazza's video where he compares as much alcoholic markers as he can to see which one is the best, Copics win, of course, but for a steep price.

read 'drawing lessons from the great masters' by robert beverly hale.
practice drawing cylinders and spheres until you can draw them in such a way that they're so good they look like an optical illusion. drawing cubes is to condition your mind for perspective so you should do that as well. by practicing these shapes, your paintings will take on their nature. as an example; if you drill proficiency of spheres into your artistic ability, you will be automatically better at drawing breasts.
the book i mentioned will teach you the fundamentals so that you are well-quipped to navigate the various aspects of art. it moreso teaches you how to think like an artist, rather than simply telling you what to think.
you can already do hands better than ai so at least you've got that going for you.

when i first saw the thumbnail it had a nice atmospheric fantasy vibe, though when i opened it up it didn't look as good. i think it lost that sense of atmosphere (when i saw the full size image) due to how you didn't spend much time blending and rendering. but the impression and colors that you have are very good. it could make a very good finished piece

Honestly seems more active and there’s more people than Brian posting.

Like in January last time I checked in everyone was whining about some sticky of stolen art tutorials being removed and it was mostly just some Czech shill farm making Draw This In Your Style threads to farm free art to steal.

Like 2018 or whenever was a handful of “schizo” namefags basically just posting shit to piss off people telling them to kill themselves.

Honestly this AI hysteria has brought in way more activity, and the best part is that it’s not just a bunch of sniveling ESL Putin shills attacking anyone that’s not an oligarch cocksuck.

Seen so many people over the last idk 8 years wander over to /ic/ and post legitimately cool shit that is kind of innovative and novel and would have a real potential and is definitely something they should keep working on, and they’ll basically be called trash by anonymous foreigners until they get demoralized and/or fuck off.

The board becoming more and more anti-namefag and more and more pro-anonymous Eastern European shill farm employee that is a professional contrarian and wants to steal your art, is really what kind of fucked things over. Rather of a bunch of newfags sincerely arguing about AI than a bunch of Ivans calling every westerner a degenerate faggot that sucks at art.

Thats because IRL you've got two different images, one for each eye. From a photo you essentially only have 1 image. You keep getting confused by the two images from each of your eyes.

Look up "Draw Mix Paint" on youtube to learn how to mix color. Get a palette knife. Don't worry about using the same brush for everything. Unless you're using pure white then wiping your brush off between colors is enough.

It's good that you took the time to finish it. Think of the first parts of the drawing step as being more important to the final work than anything else. Check all of your proportions to your reference, and when you aren't sure about something then you'll know what gaps in your knowledge you have to fill in. Be very careful not to simply copy what you see without thinking about it, as you'll grow very fast by being mindful of what you're doing. Keep finishing your painting like you've done here, and enjoy it. Keep sharing it with us.

With the grid. I just draw the important outlines. the pencil lines would be as detailed as this pic from google. Important contours such as the clavicle would also be marked with a line.
I take advantage of the very fast drying time of acrylic paint, I can just slather on colours without regard if it actually matches the reference image and I'll fix it on subsequent layers. This is why I prefer it to oil.

Not super happy with this one, I think I'm too beholden to the reference. Doesn't really feel like there a focal point in this to me, probably should have lightened the rocks around the gate. More atmospheric perspective was needed on the background hill and bridge, its merging with the closer hill, I make this mistake all the time. Thoughts appreciated.

I would say most of my art creation at this point is fairly leisurely. I paint what I'd like to paint, to the extent I'd like to paint it. I rarely study in the strict sense of how I used to. Soz bro, either you've been scammed or you're mistaken, oils never dry this fast no matter the medium. The oils always win on unprimed paper not the other way around. After some time (not instantly) you would see oilstains everywhere. But if you're not worried about archiving your work while you're still practicing you shouldn't really have to worry. Nicolas Uribe does it often, he talks about painting on a budget aswell if you're intrested. I think he's mostly lazy tho :)
Prepping with acrylic gel medium as a buffer works well, it's cheaper than gesso and dries faster I just love spreading it on cardboards and whatever I can find

That said, other anon is right, do a few value exercises to warm up first. You seem to get lost along the way somewhere. Which is interesting bc I also see a sense of focus and order, especially palette wise.

So I'll keep it short:
> values
> edges
> foreground/background. Try to find a way where I can squint my eyes and differentiate between the two
> detail. this overlaps with foreground and edges

You seem to be well aware of your recurring mistakes so I think you'll be fine. I'm pretty confident everyone has their own personal Achilles heel tho. Hope this helps

"Dry" was the wrong word, it wasn't fixed in place or anything, it's just that the paper I used is really absorbant and I was thinning the paint a bit with turpentine. It let the paint soak into the paper fast, made it difficult to mush around after. It was still mobile though.

You're overthinking it.

If you try to get to a pro level, then you've got a few interesting options already, just pick one, use it a few times (10, 15, not twice), weight its pros & cons according to your personal tastes, and eventually try something else.

Otherwise if you just want to have fun, just pick any and enjoy yourself.

Regarding the warm ups, try warming up the muscles involved: draw a bunch of lines, a few circles/ellipses, make sure your eyes are "connected" with your hand.

5/10min should be good enough. Some people warm-up for longer: for instance, they'll do a 30min/1h random figure drawing. But usually, those then spend about the rest of the day drawing & painting, so a more extensive warm-up makes sense.

I painted a bird, what do you think? Any feedback is appreciated.

That's nice, I feel the forehead is a bit flat though and you lose that nice soft shading on the hands.

Aww thanks. I'll try my hand at a face again. I think my main issue is that I get too eager to go in with ink and watercolours, I need to slow down and take my time with the sketch.

Post the updated one, is this a ceramic thing your painting or something?

>>6485490
I like it, dont have much in the way of crit. Very pleasant, I love spotting a robin when I'm out walking the dog.

Nice work, areas that are sticking out to me as far as needing more work are the ear, where her hair is covering her neck, and maybe the nose.
I feel like the hair around the ear should be covering it more or somthing, kinda feels like its sticking out a bit too much to me.
The way her hair line is covering her neck makes me think she has a really awful haircut.
Face generally looks a bit flat, might be the lighting in the photo but for example definition of the bridge of the nose isn't there.

Looks great, I think adding some black to certain spots will really make this pop, especially in the eye area.

Good.

Nah I was at the art supply store and I bought a pad of black watercolor paper on a lark. This is only the second painting I've done on black paper, actually. Turns out I kinda like it.

As for what color paper to choose, I usually go with white for versatility's sake, but I will sometimes tone it with ink pads and such sometimes before painting on it.

Lots of people like starting with a grey or other midtone paper and adding the lights and darks. I don't do that much myself but it's a good option. Hope this helps.

B&W mastercopy WIP, learning how to paint color into grayscale values and seems like edge control is a big factor here. I'm going to start my attempt to replicate brushstrokes and work on the drapery next, any advice beforehand appreciated.

Nice WIP so far, I hope you don't mind me asking but how do you plan or evaluate the glazing beforehand for a mastercopy? I do painting straight on canvas with an underpainting and have glazed only once.

Very pretty, so lovely.

I kneel.

I like the concept. I think next time you could try to start with block ins first instead of starting with small strokes because the values are confusing.
>>6486536
Cool stuff.
>>6486319
I like this one a lot, the focus is a lot clearer compared to your earlier paintings. I don't have much to say cause it seems like you already got plenty of help and know what direction to take.
>>6485490
Very scenic. Only crit is the bottom right is a little distracting cause it fights with the bird for attention but I like the bird a lot, anon.
>>6484180
Pretty, but I do think you could work on values, they are somewhat chaotic and with the hair I think starting with a large mass and then getting to the small details such as individual strands would work better. Tbh it's difficult to crit with the lighting.

Now that I look at it again, I need to reorganize some proportions and rework the values on the side of the face before continuing.
