If you are a /beg/inner or /int/ermediate in art, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice.
Use this thread instead of making new threads or post in the drawthread with fundamental exercises.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS wide using one of the following methods:
1. screenshot the image and post that instead
2. change camera capture settings to something smaller
3. send to computer and resize in MSPaint

TRY TO BE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK.
When giving feedback, avoid vague "advice" - point what's wrong and try to give the anon you're quoting a clear direction to improve their art (study heads < watch THIS VIDEO about head structure, read THIS SECTION of THIS ARTIST'S BOOK, etc).
You, feedback seeking anon, should also try to be clear and concise when asking for critique/help. When posting your artwork, say what you want help with, and what's your goal with the study/artwork.

So recently on /tg/ a friend on the drawthread gave me some advice when it comes to line works. What I used the map pen for the linework of a pic of River from Armello. line work aside, I tried to follow his advice of using loose shapes before refined shapes. Though I would like some feedback. How is it compared to my other works? (will be shown in a later reply.)

I feel like i somehow found a lost piece in my art journey.

Its not bad at all and even shows form. I recommend you to get charcoal stick (both black and white/brown) if you want to stick to trad longer. It will make shading large areas a breeze and improve your results. Also in drawings like this, learn to use eraser as final stage where you erase the hard white edges (like the spot on left bottom where table merges into keyboard). You gently erase tiny line there which will definitely separate keyboard and table.

i've never drawn anything complex from imagination nor have i gone beyond basic gesture in figure drawing so i did a quick test where i drew a figure from imagination starting from gesture to (basic) construction then outline to test my progress so far. it was a tough pose that i don't think i've ever practiced before so you can see where my imagination was failing me on how i should kick the one leg back which is also kicked back at the wrong angle. the right hip also looks funny mainly due to how wide the hips ended up but overall i'm pretty happy with the outcome even though it's unfinished. i gave myself limited time so below was sort of a take two doing gesture only which i think captured the pose a bit better especially the back leg. i'll need to practice some construction and proportions in the mean time and next time i do this i'll need to draw bigger so i can get the face

I’m sure it varies from person to person, but how many sketches or rough drafts should I do before finalizing line art? Too often, I draw something, give some edits, then once I’ve gotten the lineart done and colored it, I immediately hate it. Dude, I'm the anon who asked for your refs, sorry for taking so long.

I think you're tackling Tom's work quite well, but in the excitement to bite the cool meaty stuff that anatomy as a whole is you're forgetting to do some basic things like measuring and comparing proportions.

For example, when drawing faces in profile you consistently elongate the face too much, throwing off the rest of the body's proportions. If we erase the heads on the two seated figures here in this study the bodies don't look bad, but if we compare the head size with the body on the second figure we can see that the whole torso is two heads high only.

Funny thing is, you mess up way more drawing heads in profile than 3/4 or front facing. Maybe there's some remnants of symbol drawing going on there. I believe a couple of days studying to fix this issue would make a world of difference going forward.

I'm back guys. You know I'm not sure I'm grasping this whole watercolor thing just yet. How do you make 'light' pop out more? do you just leave it blank and dont add water/light grey tone to the edges where the light is brighter?
Same for the darker tones , do you just dry brush it and lightly mix with water to create a gradient or can I mix with black ink?

Also on a sort of related question, have any of you tried selling your designs/drawings using that POD model? You know, t-shirts, mugs, caps, and all that.

No schooling, only painted on Canvas 1 other time as a date thing years ago (i think with watercolor?)

Im actually kind of happy with how it came out, I tried to "curl" my strokes on the blue sky layer into a 0 shape when I got to the center so looking at it felt nicer.

Wish the strokes on the ground were more consistent, wish the yellow of the eye and the purple of its corona werent so miscolored (I assume its because I did a full layer for the sky and foreground first, any ideas to help with that in the future maybe?)

I haven't finished the actual art but I'll definitely scan it and keep that back up just in case. Not doing much for xmass other than working on this and my day job desu.

>>6409158
Thanks Anon, I do have shaky lines sometimes, happens mostly when I'm trying to loosen up my linework and it just ends up shaky like that.
I think this is the last practice I'll go with.
I dont have any masking fluid at the moment but I found out you can use candle wax(although is not very precise or good for sharp lines) so I went with a lil masking tape cut to shape and it does work great at giving that 'radiating light' effect. You just have to be extra careful when you remove it or else it'll rip the paper.
I'll use it more often from now on.

Still theres plenty of room for improvement but I have to take the leap and work on the actual piece at some point. Thank you all for the tips and hopefully I'll see you on the next thread.

I applaud you for actually trying to finish something and not just grinding Loomis heads. The yellow dividing lines don't have perspective. They get smaller, which is good, but the ends should get narrower. See picrel. There's also usually a white line on either side of a highway, for the shoulder. Make a list and sit down and correct everything. Think of it as a process, like editing an essay paper.

I honestly think you should repaint this like 10, 20, maybe even 50 times, trying different colors and using references to get more realistic shapes for things in the environment. You'll also want to look at references for environment lighting. And I'd consider working on a gradient for the sky, perhaps? Look at different sunsets on an image search engine.

What do I need to be able to draw a nicer background? I can never seem to roughly or neatly draw a foliage/leaves/grass or anything like that. It usually ends in this horrible scribble and ruins the entire work.
Anyone have any tips? Im still pretty /beg/ so I want to get as much logical practice I can get. I hate seeing my scribbles cause I know its frustration of not know what to do

1) copying from a reference is harder than i thought and so is constructing the body in a way i'm not used to. there's so much more musculature and boney parts than what i'm used to, but i'll get better

and more importantly
2) i tried drawing while zoomed out and all of my lines come out as really wobbly even with stabilization on, what the fuck? i can't apply proper line weight because i feel like i have no control and have to zoom in to make it look even remotely okay. is this really a dexterity issue or am i doing something wrong?

Am I not spending enough time on drawing in general? What I mean by this, is that whenever I decide to put my pencil to paper, whether that be drawing from reference, doodling, or studying, I will almost always, at most, spend 30 minutes on drawing before I decide to move onto the next study. If I study from a reference, I’ll maybe spend 25 minutes looking at the object before I start drawing for about 5 minutes, if I’m drawing for myself, I’ll often only draw for a period of 30 minutes.

Am I spending too little time spent on drawing to etch any of the fundamentals down into my brain?

I've done worse, but I always feel like I'm missing a few obvious things that can turn a drawing from barely acceptable, to actually decent. In this case, I'd imagine my posing is too stiff, and I have no real line weight to speak of. I'm not sure of the best way to practice the latter. The former I could probably get better at simply by doing a lot more gesture drawing. I've also heard people say my stuff doesn't have much 3D to it, which might be symptoms of my problem with the other two things.

Not really a fan of my coloring, but that's a slow process no matter what, I think.

Don't know if this helps, but work from lightest to darkest values when using watercolor (the opposite of oil and acrylic). Also, I find it easier to turn what I'm painting upside down when things are lit from below so the light source is above the subject when picking the areas where the subject is illuminated. For some reason I have a better time thinking of the light falling over the form from above rather than shining up. Not sure why that is, but it works for me. Pic is ink wash, but it works very similar to watercolor

>I've also heard people say my stuff doesn't have much 3D to it, which might be symptoms of my problem with the other two things.

The lack of 3d is not really part of the other two things and I think it's worth for you to study it before the other two. Try drawing some simple 3d volumes in perspective when you warm up, like boxes and cylinders.
Another thing that might help is figure drawing (different from gesture). Even if you are working stylized you can pick up things that will help sell the 3d. Like in this picture, how should the right shoulder look from this perspective? Where should the centerline of the torso be drawn?
Should the tube top's bottom edge be curving up or down, from this perspective? Should the skirt's top edge be curving up or down?

I think the other big thing you are missing is anatomical/subject knowledge of the human figure and clothes. But these are things that take a long time to build an understanding of, honestly it's not bad to just look up references esp. for clothing and just try to replicate them into your drawing.

There's also common constructions for things like anime heads and hair that you might want to look up; personally I'd just try to approach one thing at a time.

I greatly appreciate this advice. I need to make better use of referencing in my pieces. I obviously references another drawing to get some of the wider details right, but I end up taking shortcuts in terms of clothes, when arguably the details there, even simplified, can make something look okay, to good. I’ve been trying to use 3D models to get a better sense of how things look in a 3D sense, but I guess those have their limitations, because I’m the one making the pose. Even if it’s technically possible, it might not be ‘right’. You both have given me some stuff to consider. I just need to start trying to implement it instead of shuffling my feet.

the other 2 anons gave you great advice. i would recommend doing more figure drawings in the 7-10 minute range focusing on basic construction and proportions, stuff that you'd find in Micheal Hampton's book. Your coloring is 100% fine btw.

for specific pointers, I'd make sure that for every head you draw, make the eyes halfway from the top of the head to the chin, or even lower than that. Make sure all the lines that run across your forms (like the clothes that wrap around the body) run across the body like an ellipse

Thank you. That’s a good idea as well, though I do have some comfortability with the idea of light projection onto surfaces.
I think where I’m struggling now is understanding how colored light affects the natural color of the subject, exactly like how in your pic it starts bright orange then changes to green in the shaded areas.
It’s a real mind fuck, like how do you do that in such a way that an orange light shines onto a blue shirt and graduating the colors so it doesn’t just turn brown?

do it and fail miserably again
then do it again and improve a little
fail again, and improve a little
repeat as long as you live, the biggest failure would be to give up after not being perfect after doing 10 attempts

Start out by making the strokes very fast. Don't worry if you overshoot or skip, just go fast enough that you cannot hesitate or correct midway. Then start slowing it down once you're used to making a confident mark.

if loomis/drawabox are keeping you from drawing for some reason then honestly just dont bother with them for now
try drawing random objects in real life or studying good artists

>because how good do you have to not be beg

that particular piece has enough mistakes in it to be /beg/ but read the title, it's /beg/&/int/ now.

by the time you're /int/, it'll be /beg/&/int/&/pro/, and if you somehow ever get to the point where you can make a living with it it'll be /beg/&/int/&/pro/&/patreon top 100/&/Shonen Jump's best sellers/&/possessed by KJG's ghost/.

your right to post in /draw/ is drifting away every day, you must grind faster that it does

how does my sketch look so far? I tried to redline it so its not as hard to see since i know my lines can be a little chicken scratchy when i paint

also shes supposed to be anorexic tier so i made the hips a bit wide, i based her slightly off of Denise from Skinny Fans.
Character is Havnis from Yugioh though

I should probably use the spheres/boxes even when I'm drawing from a photo, right? The whole thing is a mess but I think the most egregious thing is that I failed to put the eyes in perspective which messed up the whole pose.
I'm a complete beginner btw, please be gentle.
