If you are a /beg/inner or /int/ermediate in art, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice.
Use this thread instead of making new threads or post in the drawthread with fundamental exercises.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS wide using one of the following methods:
1. screenshot the image and post that instead
2. change camera capture settings to something smaller
3. send to computer and resize in MSPaint

TRY TO BE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK.
When giving feedback, avoid vague "advice" - point what's wrong and try to give the anon you're quoting a clear direction to improve their art (study heads < watch THIS VIDEO about head structure, read THIS SECTION of THIS ARTIST'S BOOK, etc).
You, feedback seeking anon, should also try to be clear and concise when asking for critique/help. When posting your artwork, say what you want help with, and what's your goal with the study/artwork.

Beg continuing Bridgman. It certainly gives good pointers such as cutting in shapes and line of balance stuff, as well as mapping where weight-bearing foot should go. Feels better than trying to draw simplifies gestures and figures from photos since it's hard to simplify when you are just starting out.

Hi anon. you did really good, and this practice will be so beneficial for you to improve your drawing skills. Moving forward, try to be really strict on your construction, especially building things out of simple spheres, boxes, and cylinders. Don't be shy about showing construction lines / geometric forms, it'll only pay you back dividends. Here, I drew over your figures using only simple spheres and cylinders. I even constructed the hips out of a sphere, and though that's not perfectly anatomical, it's a good initial placeholder

the gesture is nice, and you tried to make the head have shape. the overall composition is pretty pleasing, overall good job!
from the image, it seems like you approached the image like a set of outlines that you color in, a bit like a coloring book. this becomes apparent in spots like her thighighs. the thought was probably something like "this is where the leg ends. this is where the thigh high starts", but there is no sense that the leg actually continues to exist underneath, because now the priority becomes "do the outlines of the thighhigh".
try to also give the image a fixed light source, this will make it easier to apply light and shadow.

the legs were only an example of something that pertains to the entire image imo. try thinking of the body as a volumimous object, a combination of 3D shapes, instead of thinking of it as a certain amount of lines that surround a person or thing.
i'm not a pro at construction either, but i would have made the figure roughly like this. hope that helps.

>>6403688
I feel like you're pointing out to a flaw core to me that I can slightly perceive, but I fail to transpose the general idea of your take on how exactly my drawing should be looking like when applying this concept. it's true that I started off with a really simple lineart and then tried afterwards to compensate for the lack of 3D shapes with a careful rendering. on your exemple, the pose is slightly different, the clothes are sticking to the skin consequently giving more room for the 3D shapes and forms of the body to slightly protude and become apparent, and this permits to add in more relevant shadows. the gist of the issue as I currently grasp it, is that my current pose as opposed to yours doesn't open up any margin for further elaborated 3D shapes. are we on the same page?

Thanks. Filled out unfinished sheet and some more, and tried doing hands. I keep making fingers too long.
Another thing I wonder about is line economy. So far I can only get results close enough to the reference by building a ''net'' of lines, which looks messy. Otherwise different parts can go in whatever direction.

don't worry, you'll eventually get the hang of it. figure drawing really helps in that regard, at some point you just get a rough understanding of the geometry of a body, but unfortunately this isn't really something you can skip without practice.
your pose is fine, a more shape-like approach would work for it! i was just careless and was looking at a smaller cutout of your drawing when i was drawing it, and it accidentally came out that way ^^;;;

i'd recommend for you to get a cheap one anyway. digital drawing has some rather different facets than working with traditional media in terms of both workflow itself, functions of various software, and the mechanical component of a stylus just behaving differently from, say, a pencil or brush.
getting used to those things on the way to learning fundies will definitely be a plus!

>> No.6403774

>>6403767
You can just get a cheap $50 one, if you worry about overspending. Though, it probably won't inspire you enough if you get discouraged early by only being able to symbol draw (what happened with me).
If you plan on drawing digitally later, you should get it though since you'll have to get used to it at some point anyway.

I'm /beg/ and I bought a drawing tablet so I wouldn't have to buy as much paper. I think it's better to start traditional since that's what most of the recommended beginner books will be considering, but there's nothing wrong with getting a cheap tablet and seeing if you enjoy drawing digitally.

Thanks anons. Yeah eventually doing digital drawing is definitely the ambition. I just had this idea that as a /beg/ I should at least put some work into paper drawing first as that's more "fundamental" or whatever, but I do find it a little bit awkward having to manage all the paper and pencils and stuff and desu I'm embarrassed about my housemates seeing my drawings lol.

Drawabox maybe, if you like grinding. You could always start out just trying to draw things you see in your room or outside. There are plenty of videos on YouTube that can help get you started, too, like this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K5AV42mgAe0.. You could also think of something you like, like your favorite animal or character, and then look up "how to draw x" even adding "simple" or "cartoon" to see how people go through the process. I'm also starting out, and I can relate to how you feel. I think it has to do with how a lot of people want to draw people as soon as possible, which actually requires a lot of thought going into it.
What's helping me right now is finding things to stay motivated. I don't try to go through each book all at once, but I skim them and find things that may help me at my current skill level. After a while, I come back to them and try to pick up a few more little things. It's all about staying motivated and just making a bit of progress as time goes on. It's a slow process for me, though. I would say I'm only at the level of a middle schooler going through an art phase right now, but I'm better than I was a few months ago. I think it's important to recognize your own progress as you continue learning.

>> No.6403804

The more I study, the more I see imperfections in other people's drawings now. I think that's a good thing, but it also makes me think that sometimes I'm being too hard on myself and I should take it easy — which is really bad for motivation.

i have been doin taco tutorials for a week now

I feel like in this short time my knowledge of human anatomy has definitely improved, particularly how to use simple solids to construct body parts
However i feel like i am severely lacking in other areas, basically everything that is supposed to come before that.
Whenever i try to construct a human body from scratch, i find it comes out way shittier than what i want it to be, particularly when it comes to:
- proportions of the human body
- harmony of the figure

A few years ago i had read Loomis and Keys to Drawing but i think i forgot almost everything there.
I am thinking i should read those books first, and then Vilppu stuff for figure gestures?

what this anon said
>he draws curves for the thighs and arms and i'm trying to do the same. am i supposed to be drawing stick figures
no, you gave it your best at your current level and that's pretty good. what's happening here is that your eye is not yet trained to recognize basic shapes, so the result looks flat and the lines appear displaced. if you're having fun drawing gestures, keep doing them. if they frustrate you, focus on something else for a while and return when you feel you can give it another go. the problem is that you are going to have a very hard time figuring out "3d" when you grind gestures day in day out.

give yourself time and focus on basic shapes and exercises. i'd recommend you draw along with this video:

different time intervals and levels like

1. Get sphere, plane and semi accurate hair/bow/nose/jaw lines

2. above + place features

3. above + detail

proko essentially does this in his drawing the head series. maybe not explicitly but in the sense that he shows different levels of completeness/quick sketch you can use as a good approximations

As an aside, once you "learn" at a basic level how to draw something, timing yourself drawing as many as possible is almost always a good exercise. learn to draw hand? good now do it over and over to different level of details with different time inetervals

I recommend using better paper so you don't have to worry about it ripping, I've been there. Beside that I honestly recommend using it less and just drawing the "correct lines" over the others should you have made a mistake. Also, patience is key, while copying you can take your time to check the proportions and relations of the shapes you're drawing. For example, the woman's shoulders are about equal in height, but in your copy her left shoulder is lower and the hair isn't in front of it like in your reference. Keep at it and you'll see quick results though!

thing is, i'm not really sure where i should start with.i kinda have a style and i can draw you a hand, but i work really slowly and cannot do lineart to save my life (the rightmost one is me trying to carve out the lineart out of the sketch like in the first pic, but it just looked lifeless whereas in my previous attempt it somehow ended up being part of the appeal and i have no idea how). dynamic angles and posing are also the bane of my existence and color theory is something i can comment on after it's already been laid out, but i have a hard time coming up with it if i have nothing to bounce off of. i know i wanna be better, but i'm just kinda lost on what the best way to actually study would be

the nose is angled too far to the side and downwards. look at where the tip of the nose is pointing in the picture and in your drawing and how you can see the bottom of the tip

sketch-->lineart is a common thing people have issues with, there's a ton of yt videos on it
from my /beg/ understanding there's multiple possible reasons, but generally your lineart will have less information (like detail, weight, or noise) than your sketch
have you tried drawing directly with a pen tool before? like from reference

There's no designated OP. You're free to make it, you'll even be given the chance to pick someone's art for the opening thread image!

It requires context I think. It could be. But I don't feel an inhuman horror form the hands alone.

I don't think there is much wrong about it. Would like to see after the whole render is done!

I really like that face and the fattening around it. Bleeding into the rest of the body. I could not defeat him.

>>6404736
The face is a little wide I think, The gesture is okay but the stomach area looks lacking. I'm not good enough at anatomy to confidently redline.

Would buy

Stabilization is your friend. Bigger canvas is your friend.

Are you Pixel Schizo? I recognize these legs...

Picrel is me getting back into it after a year long break. Wanted to do a profile since I feel like I suck at faces and heads.
