not him, but finding an axis along which to hatch that looks good is much easier than finding 2, and miura was not notably good at the latter
it’s a useless distinction to a casual observer, but when you implicitly put miura up there with an artists’ artist that actually can crosshatch, you can expect artists to have a fit
also doesn’t help that the guy initially bringing up crosshatching was sniffing his own farts a bit too aggressively

If one can make a choice between using different hatching techniques then they are different. Why are you so adamant that there's no different? They both have the same goal of conveying value with line, but they're different approaches. There isn't a huge difference between them but they do have a different look, as >>6391835 and >>6391552 demonstrate.

Do however disagree that Miura "rarely" crosshatches. He just employs hatching as a part of his style, I would argue that he still fairly regularly crosshatched on pages. Maybe not so much on the big shock-and-awe spreads as have been mostly been posted ITT, but definitely within more typical pages of the work.

What artists have good and simple hatching so I can understand at least the basics? I love miura but his works have overwhelming amount of details, my beg brain will just explode.

Dave Sim did a comic called Cerebus the Aardvark, and for over two thirds of its 300 issue run, adding spectacular backgrounds to the story Dave was telling, and still is still collaborating with people and doing commissions. This pic is from one,and you can see the process he uses.

go watch richard friend videos on youtube. order by oldest since he mostly does art videos now. used show you how to ink, hatching, crosshatching, feathering, brushwork vs microns, various techniques and so on.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AHoqh27vQRw is not a dedicated inker or channel towards it, but this video is very simple, shows close ups and very simple crosshatching process. he does the entire image layer by layer (ie he'll hatch one direction for everything and then identify values that need crosshatching and come in with the second layer. if more values are needed, a third hatch in a different direction and so on). its as simplified as it gets.

if you want to learn, download masters and blue line their work. ink it like a comic book artist would do for pencil work (thats basically how they do it anyways - pencils scanned and sent to inker who prints it and inks over). try to see what direction he throws his lines. if its thicker at one end, try to identify if he did it with a pen or nib or brush and if its multiple lines to make the stroke or done in one motion. if there are white dots or spaces, are they done by crosshatching or did the artist come in with white out afterwards (most stars in night sky are just splatter white out/cover relevant area and use a toothbrush with white ink or white out and rub hand over it to splatter it or use a credit card or whatever). franklin booth and bernie wrightson havewhite spaces done entirely by cross hatching techniques while most comic book artists will do it digitally/photobash with assistants on computer or white out technique, depending on their preferences.

the point is to identify the way the line is made. inking is basically just make straigh tlines over and over. youll rotate paper and make that same straight line in a different direction.

I'm going to rep you and say this is equally impressive because you're doing this solo. It looks worse. But you probably put in roughly equal amounts of time on this, not counting his assistants' labor.
Pony autism be damned you a hustler.

that’s like saying washes are a subset of inking

>> No.6395804

>>6395777
inking breaks away from painting when used with finer points, but you can ink with a brush much like painting.
Anyway, you get similar results of cross hatching by hatching straight lines. You don't have to cross anything. You're hatching small lines, not making large strokes.
