6371064 No.6371064 [Reply] [Original]

This thread is dedicated to master studies, where you copy artwork you admire as a form of study. They are the quickest way to improve and learn about any fundamental you are having problems with. If you need to work on your hands, copy hands from other artists, and if you're having trouble with rendering, make careful studies of paintings with lighting you admire. Studies can be quick or long. You can even copy anatomy books like Bridgman, Morpho, and Hogarth. The type of studies you want to do depend on your personal goals and the types of problems you are grappling with.

Artists of all levels are welcome. Critiques and redlines are encouraged.

Unrelated but what's up with Kevin Finch's pencil handle? It's taped?

You mean David Finch? The extra girth makes it easier to hold in general. You can hold it with a more relaxed grip or since it is soft, grip it tight without much strain on your hand. This helps to ease cramping from long sessions. It also makes it a bit easier to control of the tip of the pencil.

Really liking Tsukasa Hojo recently

>>6375586
if you haven't tried the memorization technique, now would be a good time to try it, especially if you're going for simpler studies like for the features.

Make a study
Put away the reference / previous drawing
Draw it again

This will really help the shapes you are studying in Morpho come out in your imaginative drawing

Insanely hard, took like an hour and a half, and an hour of that was just staring at it. Of course I got the first figure done before I realized it was gonna go off the page. So there are no corrections on this one, I did them after I took the picture because the page would be extremely cluttered. Still, I got more right on the bottom one than I thought I would. I think if you had to memorize one bridgman drawing perfectly, it should be this one. There are so many clues and shorthands about how bridgman constructs and thinks about the figure. I will be revisiting this one for sure.

I have the opposite problem, I took a painting class years ago and can only fix things or add detail by reshaping blobs of "paint". My skills have degraded from absence and I'm playing catchup, but my eyes are still ok. I'd like some help on that, but for your problem:

Usually a person has a preference for what kind of style of painting they want, even if they aren't consciously thinking about a certain era of painting. Here are some things to keep in mind while painting:
Do you like it when it looks like you painted it, or do you want to hide it?
Are little details fun or annoying? How about highlights?
There are many ways to make a focal point, which way do you like?

And when you've figured this out, you bend more towards that direction. Since this is the master study thread, you eyeball the art movements on wikipedia or something and say, "that one". For example, someone who doesn't enjoy painstaking detail and wants a painterly look, but likes little flourishes may study impressionist artists.

>>6392698
thanks anon. beautiful flower. It seems that you just have to kinda go for it, but blobs of paint scare me because of how messy it looks before you clean it up. The precision you get from lines just aren't there from the start. I plan to do lots of master copies to learn painting though; I have a book of John Singer Sargent's charcoal portraits and I was thinking of just making 1:1 copies of those, eventually. I like to start with figurative subjects and then hopefully everything else takes care of itself. I also have GuWeiz's art book, which I plan to study

If you really feel like you're struggling with line drawing and need help with that, I think you should watch the David Finch study streams linked in the op of this thread, they really helped me and showed me the way a pro comic artist might study

yes, you've improved 10x since you started, I think.

Also, I really really encourage you to do your daily 30 min gesture drawings too. It will help everything from Bridgman sink in more. It'll show you how all this stuff is applied, and I'm afraid you're not getting all that you can out of Bridgman without the gesture drawing.

quickposes.com is a good website to start for this. just 2-3 minute drawings of basic cylinder figures will take you a long way. I'm sure there's an extra 30 minutes you can fit in your schedule.

spend quite some time doing line art
then paint all the big shape first squint my eyes till it has similar value and color contrast (since I don't try to make it the exact color from the rei one)
when both are done the rest is just mindless zooming in and filling/rendering all the small stuff following the line while zooming out to double-check the big picture with rei one
then paint over the line and redraw some of it
notice that rei is using a different technique here with clean line art and sticking to it so the edge is cleaner and can change line art color a lot. which is hard for me to do since the ref is kinda blurry and I'm lazy so I draw loosely then paint over and redraw some of the line art

your corrections look really great, but the memory drawings are a bit rough. That might be a sign you're not constructing strictly enough. It might help if you go in with pencil first, then ink it with the ballpoint pen afterwards. You can use a kneaded eraser to lighten pencil lines an infinite amount of time. Even if you don't prefer it, just try it out a couple times and spend as much time as you need correcting yourself, you might begin to like it

It feels really pedantic at first but you need be able to copy things exactly. When other artists do something successfully, the copying skill will let you figure out how to do it for yourself, so it unlocks a lot of learning to be able to do it right. Oh it just looks sort of blocky like the Bridgman figures. You have the right idea in schematizing the block in but it needs to be a little more accurate. The values also look like they're done visually despite the planarization, so the dimensionality gets reduced. Speaking of values, this is a total pain but you should try to clean them up more. Literally sharpen your pencil to the finest point you can and fill in the little white dots on the paper, then go in with a kneaded eraser and pick out all the spots that are too dark. It'll be a huge pain in the ass but it will make your shadows especially look way flatter and give much more the illusion of depth, reality, and completeness.

Put like 15 hours into it I think? Which at the time was out of like a planned 40 hours. Sargent spent like a year on his giant version so I figured giving it a work week would be fair. And then I didn’t even do that lol.

Should I keep working on it now that I’m back into being unemployed or should I leave it as is as a monument to my lazy hubris?

I decided to do a study on my favorite artist, and one main thing I noticed and haven't been able to replicate is how "consistent" he is with ink thickness when doing certain areas.

I used >Krita's, Basic size / pressure pen, and my weights are so far off his.
After finishing my study I can only assume he is using a pen with no line weight? And changing it depending on what area he's working on? IE see the hair fringe vs the overall contour vs the hand thickness.
Is this the correct assumption?

I would gladly appreciate the input from anyone with a more trained eye then this 3 month beg (even about things not related to this that I should be aware of), that was the "main" crucial thing I noticed that I know I'm not doing currently.

What brushes do you use anon? Or what would you recommend for a beg. I've been wanting to start practicing with digital painting

that was a master study of painting. I like to mix things up by working from painting from time to time.

As a beginner, you should master the round brush with pen pressure if anything without it you're just sitting on a bunch of fancy tools you can't take advantage of. but dont just get one round brush with pen pressure and expect it to be good out the box, test out opacity and flow/ brush density and other round brushes till you find something that really feels natural in your hand ( a good brush will feel like butter and you will be able to blend without using airbrush/ blend tools)

to start I recommend these simple brushes it's what i used when i started and they got me used to rendering and i still use 'round' when rendering.

Ctrlaltpaint is a good site to teach you how to render as well, give it a look.

His appears more contrasted for sure, but real life lighting is different and you two might not be using the same paper and pencils.
So with that in mind I think you're doing well really. At first I thought it was the same anon until I read your comment.
