After viewing this intimidating sketchwork, I almost gave up on posting this, but then I thought "screw it" and decided to go ahead.
These are concepts of airships for the characters in >>6391746 , i wanted to give them a retro look, so I took inspiration from 1930's and 40's automobiles, spaceships from sci-fi pulp covers and also WWI submarines. The idea for these ships is that the hull structure is built mainly AROUND the balloon instead of just on top or underneath, the balloons would obviously be filled with a special type of gas that isn't helium.

you are drawing in strict isometric and it looks stupid. Exaggerate your perspective more. You already do this with your dumbass furries, probably subconscious because you are more comfortable drawing that subject matter.
what's the point of explaining your whole life story with every post? shouldn't it be obvious what the inspiration is from the drawing itself?

great use of perspective, great values on the one on the right.
left one, you use the darkest values only for the occlusion shadows on the torso. the one on the left looks unfinished -- no wrist actuator, no shadows.
mechanical details, effective use of values for on the stamped leg pieces and the access slots.

the coachbuilding inspiration is the most effective element you used. The airship thing is not effective. It doesn't look light or large enough to hold gas, and it'd just tip over because there's no stability. It doesn't read like an airship at all, as opposed to antigravity or any number of other things.

>I had to go back to my previous drawings to make sure it wasn't an adaptation on something I already made
well, we do use inspiration from the same time period, so its only natural, i usually draw mine like pic related ww1 era dreadnoughts/ submarines combined with several smaller propeller gondolas on the side (like regular airships) also with the wide bulbous hull, in my setting the airships are floating with a secret anti gravity liquid in pipes that go through the structure.

>> No.6428290

>>6426814
>secret anti gravity liquid in pipes that go through the structure

you should make that obvious from the drawing. The overall layout is ok
(though the back horizontal fins should not be so close to the rear "leg" fins)
>>6425144
but the hull looks just like a regular hull. Show pipes or... something to differentiate from regular hull. It looks particularly bizarre to have the canvas and wood fins coming out of heavy iron/steel/whatever.

also... why does it have regular ship screws?

>It looks particularly bizarre to have the canvas and wood fins coming out of heavy iron/steel/whatever.
they are iron, on both of my designs, the lines are segments, but i can see why one could think they are made out of canvas
>also... why does it have regular ship screws?
because its also works as regular battleship if none of the anti gravitational fuel is available, the flight mode cannot be sustained forever too, because of the liquids properties (has to be kept at a certain temperature and mixture with gases to work/ overheating issues etc.)
>Show pipes or... something to differentiate from regular hull
i think its pretty distinctive from regular battlesip hulls, but i guess it could use more details, proruding pipes arent good for hydro/aerodynamics though., the fuel is highly explosive/hard to obtain aso it wouldnt be smart to have them visible, they are housed behind massive super thick armor plating behind the bublbs under the steering propeller arms, most of the magic is on the inside, like massive stabilising gyroscopes, special pipes and motors for the outside propeller gondolas.etc
also pic relatd are some earlier versions and a regular battleship

Ok, I conflated the issue by posting the wrong book. It's the first book in the series, the second book covers the rendering method(s) I'm studying.
>My issue is my visual library
I don't understand what you mean by this. To me this means, you don't know how to render primitives, or for more advanced artists, you don't know how to communicate certain materials. How are you supposed to fix that by studying sci-fi props? If you study props you're learning about design, worldbuilding, technology. How is that related to hard-surface. Hard surface has little to do with prop libraries.

I'm assuming these are all from same person yeah?
I'd suggest more decisive lines, try to visualize what you want to put down before you do. Looks like you're familiar with drawthrough method obviously, but yeah there is some inconsistencies in the perspective, but the drawings major issue is the hairy lines, also once you have that down don't get lost in the details, make sure it still reads as the object intended from a distance. You could also try drawing some mechanical objects in a 3 point perspective and see how you do. Hope that helps although You've probably heard similar advice before

yeah these are just design practice i usually just dont bother cleaning he lines, i think when i can visualise the design its enough, finished drawings are obiously cleaner, see >>6426814 the hairy lines are lazyness to be faster, because im really slow when i want to place cleaner lines these arent really important when im just trying to put out as many designs as i can

I was toying around with threads and I got it to look decent, though the perspective is off.
As for the texture, I made Triangle pattern and used the bend tool or w/e in Kirta since I was trying to see how it would look, trying to go for that camo netting pattern thats pretty hard to draw, In the end it was just a test, since I was learning about using textures and what not.
The hard part about the treads is that it it looks off if the perspective is off. It took me a bit to figure out how shade these and show that they are treads on the track, but you need a good underline or if not, dont strictly follow the underline if you know the perspective is off. I could fix it but I moved on for this until I get some coloring practice in.

A lot of mechanical artists don't really draw everything in perfect perspective.
All that really matters is you get the biggest forms in the image correct, the details can be a little off and it'll still look good.
That being said you should still be striving to get better, just keep this in mind so you don't feel too discouraged along the way.

Just pop out each piece, draw it once from sight, draw it twice from imagination, rotating it, then adding that piece to the actual model, with a page for each completed part. So you would take a page for however many pieces, draw them, draw them fitting together, then draw the arm. I think it would be a hilarious autistic challenge no matter what but does this sound valuable at all?

Any good examples for things more like DVA's mech?

I like the smallers more personal sized mechs rather than the gundam style big humanoids.
But I can only think of a few limited series that have mechs like that, maybe code geass but that feels more humanoid rather than something with this feel.

collect reference material (real life machinery, hydraulics, construction vehicles, war machines Mecha Drawings etc) then try to copy and make your own details and designs, repeat process until you are satisfied with your results, its always good to understand real life machines if you want to draw fictional ones, but mecha artists are also a good source of inspiration because they are already very skilled at inventing interesting shapes.

how does one get this proficient and good with perspective, machinery and everything else? how did you get to this point? just grind grind grind? right now when I attempt to draw machinery the outcomes are very poor and it is not a pleasant experience at all unless I go very crude sketch mode where I focus more on just outlines/silhouettes and then let my hand just semi-randomly draw in something to fill those in

Yes, in short. I guess the biggest part is being mindful while you grind and focusing on getting it right, instead of doing it for the sake of it.

I don't think that aproach is inherently flawed unless you completely lose focus of perspective and the major shapes

Not sure if it counts but its the top of a type-90.
A couple of questions...
>I do wonder how do you go about drawing faster. So how do you go about doing this? I had a undersketch that was pretty quick. But this line work was a lot harder.
>Machinery is a pain,I noticed my mistake was making the girl on the right too big (simple resize fix) but I got the perspective off so I cant really adjust it. So do you have your construction/vp lines throughout the image always on? I suppose that's what I was doing later in the drawing, trying to keep the same vp.

the type-90 is a nice tank. Dunno bout those questions in particular, but yeah, clean linework/detailwork is just a matter of milage and/or taking it slow. You don't need the VP layer on necesarely, because at one point you learn to orient objects according to one another. (As in, look at one object and deduce the perspective/vps from it, and draw the others in the same perspective.) Not that I can do it consistently, but that'd be the ideea. Until then checking the underdrawing/vps seems reasonable.

Not sure what you tried to achieve but it doesn't look bad, albeit, unfinished. Your canvas looks more bigger than to your reference. I would allow myself to be more rough with the lineart in some places to fake details and shade with a textured eraser.

Agreed with >>6626286 in that there seems to be a perspective issue with the barrel foreshortening not matching up with the rest of the vehicle. Even accounting for the turret being rotated off-center from the body, the barrel's VPs should still match the same horizon line as the hull's VPs.
Other than that, you're also shading the barrel aperture as if it were a solid face, even though it is actually hollow. As such, the aperture of the barrel should show the inner wall (and possibly rifling), which would gradate darker as light becomes less able to reach the deeper parts of the gun barrel.
You could also use more controlled and heavier lineweight to better indicate the depth of forms. If you were to consider lines as a 3D object, they too would grow thicker the closer they get to the camera; Apply that same logic here and you can help give your linework a greater sense of depth.

After doing pic related and finally start watching Gundam now I have the itch to learn how to draw proper mecha but I had no idea where to start. Thank God I found this thread.
