animation is really fuckin difficult, and lots of people tend to write about animation to make it more understandable to beginners and professionals. no single book will be able to cover every possible expression within the medium, so there tends to be a lot of useful resources.
having a ton of resources also allows a lot more flexibility and many different perspectives on how to approach it. the more resources, the better. you might learn something or find good advice about japanese animation production that winds up helping your workflow in another area

it's more about understanding the vastly different perspectives from other experienced animators. since animation itself changes so much from production to production, it's smart to educate yourself on different ways to approach animation. one resource may give really good advice on how to do incredibly intricate effects animation to shine and impress, but another may describe the pipeline's perspective and focus on the director's expectations

I don't believe there is a specific tutorial, but there are entire libraries and videos that guide you through the basics of after effects.

If you can grasp paths, keyframes, and simple stroke effects, you can make simple little animations. Some may argue this is more along the lines of /gd/, but the principles of traditional animation can still be applied.

Is TVPaint fine for illustration? I managed to get it for cheap (someone I know bought a key and didn't want it anymore) and I'm tired of flip flopping between programs

It's alright, but it's more optimized for animation tasks. You'd definitely be better off sticking to CSP for any extensive illustration work. I use CSP solely for doodling but I also have a copy of TVPaint for all of my animation stuff. There's just stuff about drawing in CSP that TVPaint can't do that well, but there's lots of stuff about animation in TVPaint that fucking sucks ass in CSP.

clip studio's brush engine feels quite a bit better, but after like a year of using it i went back to just doing all illustration stuff in TVPaint too, just because it's easier to do everything in one program. it doesn't feel like i'm missing out on anything from clip, it's nice to be able to use the timeline in an illustration process for easy 'checkpoints' to see if you're still on the right track with how the image is going. and the shortcuts / interface just feels more intuitive to me personally.

ayy thanks!
this was animated with a really simple technique. I drew out the first frame of all the debris in the air, and then just picked a random chunk and animated that single piece. when the piece finally stops moving, i just make a new layer set to hold the keyframe. then just rinse and repeat until all the individual pieces are animated. takes a long time but it makes it a bit more dynamic than just animating them all at once and accidentally making it look too uniform.

trace over your key drawing really really carefully. sculpt your lines with smaller strokes and use the eraser to clean it up instead of trying to wing it in one stroke. boil is usually supposed to be really subtle, so keep the onion skin on, flip between frames often, and make sure that nothing is too chaotic as it moves. think of it like you're inbetweening something that's BARELY moving at all. when you turn on the onion skin, you'd want your drawings to practically be on top of one another
boiling also tends to work best on 2s and 3s for general acting, but if you're animating a shiver/shake, then 1s usually fits a lot better.

i use tvpaint 11, only payed like £300 or so for a student licence, but i'd 100% pay full price with the time it saves, just for the out of pegs feature, onion skin settings and colour group frame flipping system alone. the timeline works flawlessly, it's easy to set up repeating, loop and hold frames, running the program is relatively light. it's easy to set up making animatics for long term projects and split them up into seperate files down the line. the colouring system is great too, speeds things up a lot, like one squiggle per frame just to fill a colour in, but i wouldn't make that part a deciding factor on getting the software.

i use flash and photoshop too for professional work, but tvpaint is what i do all of my personal stuff in, and if i get a job in TVpaint i can get it done way faster (assuming it's frame by frame drawn stuff).

if you're a student, buy it nigga. but otherwise i'm sure tvpaint 10 has most of the good features.

another thing that i completely forgot about that somehow i've taken for granted is that in TVpaint you can press enter to repeat your last action on the canvas. so if you fuck up drawing a line on the wrong layer, want to repeat a selection, it puts whatever you just made down again. if you select a range of frames it works across them all too with one press, so you can fill an entire animation with colour in one keyboard press. fucking revolutionary and i don't know why other art programs don't have it.

some other things, you can stretch an entire length of animation to re-time it and keep it proportionally intact. also custom brushes, you can cut out an animation and use it as a stamp / animated brush, saves a fuck load of time, and it's incorporated simply into your usual brush tool, and intuitive to use. really easy to make your own brushes that way too.

do japanese people use a different numbering system? Studying genga they use even and odd numbers which if looked at through the lens of the american numbering system would mean they animate on ones, but they don't

I just assume that's because they primarily animate on 3s and 4s?

>> No.6374327

>>6373793
>>6374284

they likely don't think about their 'number system', most animators don't. they just do what's required for the shot to look good, and sometimes you can get away with 4's. the usual method is to animate 24fps then just 'hold' the frames that last longer (2's, 3's, 4's) and on the rare instance you need to have a 1, you put that in. no point in trying to formulise it, use whatever frames work best wherever as long as it times out correctly. say for a movement that starts fast but you want one extra frame in there at the end to bounce back to a stopping point, it's prob gonna be even/odd or vice versa.

i've never worked on a production that wasn't default 24fps despite 95-100% of the project being animated on 2's. and usually, if you have camera moves in an environment, those need to be on 1's or things look choppy as fuck.

>> No.6374724

>>6373793
might depend on how they use x-sheets. sometimes they have the timing figured out beforehand or write it down as they go, but retiming later on down the pipelines might change it up and make the notes not line up well anyways.
if I'm animating with an assistant/inbetweener and need to guide them, I label keyframes just with a letter, and then use numbers counting up from 1 to label all the places that need inbetweens. it doesn't really have any relation to a x-sheet, just "INB B3-C, favor C" or some shit like that

>>6374724
i think i get it now, i figured the numbers corresponded to the x-sheet but maybe not. it does make sense that it would be annoying numbering according to the x-sheet and then needing to change up the numbers if the planned timing doesnt work later down the line so it's simpler to just count upwards by one, figure out the timings and possible inbetweens later
i guess in the end the only downside is it just makes it slightly more annoying to study their timings

First animation. I'm a retard and didn't notice the second ground line until I was almost finished. Trying to keep the size consistent is hard. Next I'm going to try something less bouncy/squishy like a bowling ball.

good rule of thumb is to know the difference between a "jumping" ball and a "bouncing" ball. a jumping ball sticks to the ground a bit longer and has way more time to squash and stretch, whereas an actual bouncing ball analogous to reality will only be on the ground for a single frame. jumping balls are typically what most non-animator animation purists would see and worship thinking it's what everybody SHOULD do, but it tends to be too over-exaggerated to be useful in many situations. a bouncing ball shouldn't contact with the ground for too long, especially if it's moving in a specific direction where the speed has to slowly roll off with every bounce.
I animated a small representation of what either looks like bouncing in place.

>> No.6384066

>>6383984
Thanks for the example. I didn't know there were different terms. I'm following along with an Aaron Blaise livestream I bought a while back so I chose to over-exaggerate it like him. I'll try a proper bouncing ball after I do a bowling ball.

I have some really stupid questions. Sorry in advance.

1. What's the lowest frame rate I could generally get away with without it looking like shit? I've heard 12fps is the lowest the human eye perceives something as a smooth motion but I don't know if that's broscience.

2. Is there a difference between animating ones on 12fps and animating twos on 24fps?

3. If I animate at 12fps and then export the video as 12fps, will it get all fucked up and play in fast-motion?

Thank you.

0 fps. Watch anime, most of the time most of the characters are not moving. If you trade focus well enough it's not noticeable. Also look at animatics. I think they express things well without putting in the thousands of hours for finished animation.

>> No.6384263

>12fps is the lowest the human eye perceives something as a smooth motion but I don't know if that's broscience.
Definitely bro science. If you learn to look for jitter you can notice it at up to very high framerates, and if you are immersed in a story it's hard for the framerate to screw it up so long as you establish a convention. Only when framerate changes does it force attention away from the story. Appeal > technical skill and effort. Appeal in still art is difficult, appeal in motion harder still. It has to do with how long each frame is held, but it is not just more frames is better.

I source sounds from random youtube videos I archived years ago using aTubeCatcher or w/e it was called. All sounds are basically made unrecognizable from source in LMMS or Audacity to fit the need of the video in question. Usually I steal music from hentai games that I torrented during 2011-2014, but occasionally I make my own music using LMMS and Audacity as well.

if you're working at 24FPS, you could go all the way down to 4s [6FPS] for slower movements and the average viewer wouldn't even notice. for faster motions and high-paces scenes, it's probably best to go to 2s and 1s. for general character acting and dialogue, 2s, and 3s is alright in most cases, unless you're working with really wild acting and fast speaking.
i was playing around with the idea of using 3s and 4s. this was from a couple years ago

Thank you very much anon.
In return I'll give some general advice for the thread

Heavily work on your key poses. Yeah I know it's obvious but It's very easy to just add more and more frames because it's very simple to line test with softwares. Plan the animation your head and in advance VERY carefully. "Fluidness" isn't the point in animation, the clarity of each pose and action is what matters most. you don't do a dozen unecessary movements at all times just for the sake of it (ding ding every wannabe amateur webgen animators in twitter)
Not saying it shouldn't ever be done, but you should know the rules before you bend and break them.
Don't hesitate to act the movement yourself as well. FEEL the movement.

I am new to animation and drawing but I just wanna pump out some roughly stick figure-tier animations for funsies. I mean not exactly that, but I wanna make things without being like super meticulous about any sort quality
If I wanted to do something for a 2.5min song, what would be a good frame rate to keep me from becoming suicidal (and more importantly dropping the entire thing)? Would it better to start with an animatic and then consider actually trying to animate something from there?

This is the most storyboard artists I've ever seen for one episode of a TV show. There's 20 artists on here?

been branching out a bit after years of doing stickfigs on flash and now I'm really starting to feel its limitations (mostly the brushes and dated UI). I know TVP is the golden standard, but I've been fiddling with Opentoonz and it's been pretty good so far, anyone else have experience with it?

12 fps is 24 fps when animated on 2s which is the standard for the industry everywhere. Anime even animates on 3s for the most part and sometimes even on 4s.

do i need a supercomputer to get smooht playback on csp? whenever i have a few layers and my files gets heavier the playback slows to a crawl, and flipping between frames lags too. for me it becomes unuseable. this same laptop i use can run adobe animate and tvpaint flawlessly though even under heavy load

I think it has a lot of potential if you can find the right story to tell with it. I really liked imagery outside the car with eyes and the stage.

>> No.6427601

>>6427250
Thanks anon. Do you mean that you dislike the scene with the car and the stage transition? I definitely think it's a bit out of place as it stands now but it's intended to be the intro, and the final product is going to be much longer.
