If you are a /beg/inner or /int/ermediate in art, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice.
Use this thread instead of making new threads or post in the drawthread with fundamental exercises.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS wide using one of the following methods:
1. screenshot the image and post that instead
2. change camera capture settings to something smaller
3. send to computer and resize in MSPaint

TRY TO BE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK.
When giving feedback, avoid vague "advice" - point what's wrong and try to give the anon you're quoting a clear direction to improve their art (study heads < watch THIS VIDEO about head structure, read THIS SECTION of THIS ARTIST'S BOOK, etc).
You, feedback seeking anon, should also try to be clear and concise when asking for critique/help. When posting your artwork, say what you want help with, and what's your goal with the study/artwork.

i think it's well-rendered. i would suggest to making them look at each other and think in therms of action/reaction.

>tattoo apprentice portfolio
have you tattooed before? i'd ask myself if a picture included in the portfolio is an actual tattoo design or if they are supposed to show of your drawing skills/you as an artist. basically: does the idea on paper translate well on skin. for this picture, i would reconsider small details in the face, because i feel like the nose you chose in this picture will not be such a good choice when it's tattooed on real skin. i think it's too many small lines too close together.
keep in mind i'm still a beg, but this is what i am noticing.
- the right horn is on the side of the head 3 or 4 o'clock, the left horn is on the back 10 or 11 o'clock.
- it looks to me, like the knee in front is broken, the leg should be rotated inwards
- i think the feet are a little too small, even for a stylized choice
the flame is a very cool idea and i think you should play around with making it more edgy, like the tail, so it contrasts with the round eight-ball.

here are my latest drawings, i fucked up a lot, but i like to believe i sovlmaxxed this time too.

Out of curiosity, how much accuracy/control can you expect to have with "shoulder" movement in the nw-se intercardinal directions once you have good proficiency/muscle control over your shoulder? I always felt the shoulder to be awkward(obviously cause i don't use it) so i often just defaulted to wrist, fingers, and elbow. Now, as im trying to diagnose my horrible line quality problems and start good pencil control habits, I've realized i have barely any nw-se control and all of any such lines i solely make with the incredible short range of my fingers, which is probably a heavy bulk of my line issues. But as i try to adopt shoulder use it still feels fucking awful, like trying to draw with my other hand. It also doesn't seem like i'd ever have nearly the same speed or line throughput as i do with the reverse sw-ne options of wrist and elbow. And I feel like if it doesn't then the only options left to reach control/speed parity in both intercardinals would be to draw ambidextrously or flip/rotate your surface which is something i already kind of hate doing.

So if you're a beg who actually draws, are you able to make really clean straight lines in nw-se intercardinal? Can you do really tight/fast shading or hatching too(fingers excluded of course)?

doesn't really address anything i said but okey. I mean just try it for yourself. Try and draw a draw a patch or section of one direction shading like a single hatching gradient block in either direction but specifically using your shoulder for nw-se.

Maybe its just me but the shoulder is incredible slow in comparison which is a shame since its your only major joint of articulation for those nw-se lines.

I will change the nose and the legs/feet, and the horns. All good little details. As for have I tattooed before--no. In my country, it's extremely frowned upon to tattoo without completing an apprenticeship, and most shops won't hire you if they found out you've done it without going through the process; it's called scratching. I've considered getting a tattoo machine and just doing it, but I wouldn't want to kill my name in the industry here.

>> No.6376940

anon when you do drawings like this in a simple static pose the point is to nail the proportions and stuff. but the proportions are completely different in every picture. just draw a straight line across the top and bottom of her head, it's in completely different places. and the bottom of her shorts and hands. try to get everything consistent. the 3/4 view is the trickist but a simple trick is that the front and back view should fit over each other perfectly with something sticking out. and then the side view is pretty simply as well. as i said draw a line straight across from each feature to line everything up correctly. if your proportions are different depending on the angle then i don't see the point.

From my research it looks like finishing drawabox (starting boxes this week) and then reading through something like Drawing From the Right Side of the Brain or Keys to Drawing And really applying myself to what I want (figure drawing, perspective/3D drawing, and drawing from the imagination) would be the best 2-3 year plan (not meaning to do DaB or KtD for 3 years but starting there). Any advice? Where would you start if you had to restart? Loomis also looks good and was my 50/50 choice, between him or Dodson. Guess it doesn't hurt to read through both, they both seem right at the level where they'd be useful to someone at the "understands fundamentally how to hold a drawing tool and make marks confidently to draw the thing they want and not the thing they don't want" level, which is where I'd like to be before I really start studying. But maybe I'm overthinking it.

It's not that bad anatomically but you only have one shadow value and I've light value and you hatching is just going on one direction. Those two reasons are why your drawings don't look good. Look into videos that show you how to do values. I think most people will recommend breaking it into 5 values. And then you can let the shadow and light shaped define the form instead of the outlines.

MAKE SURE you follow the 50% rule. You HAVE to spend half the time drawing stuff you want to draw between the boxes. Otherwise it’s not nearly as valuable. You’ll come out of that challenge knowing how to draw some okay boxes and nothing else

I'm also in that anon's position and it's hard to follow the rule. You WANT to draw but really don't have the muscles or skills TO draw. So you imagine drawing your car but there's just no applicable skills and it looks like something a child free, right? Is there worth in that? So there must be some pre-step to DaB where you gain scribble skills that allow you to produce pleasing art that can benefit from the DaB rules. Tough call.

You've got the idea but the point isn't to make boxes, the point is to approximate forms into simpler ones sorta like how a sculptor iteratively works to refine their piece.

Start by drawing from observation. Still life's of random objects in your house are a good start. You'll start to understand how to break things up as you do that, and that will include humans. Your constructions kinda get the idea down, but it looks more to me like you drew the constructions from reference images of someone else's constructions. Ya feel me?

Looking for some technical help with pic related. It isn't mine btw.

As you can see on the circled red part, on the character's right arm, the artist shaded the arm in one stroke along the white and yellow zones.

How do I achieve this?
I usually pick each individual color, and manually change it (Darken + hue ajustement) to fit the shading, but here the artist did the shading of both color in one stroke. What's the technique for this?

Okay, I think I figured it out.

1. Make a layer of flat colors of your choice
2. Create a multiply layer above
3. Now, choose a completely different color and shade by painting above it. But DO NOT USE THE BASE COLOR OF YOUR FLAT LAYER.

For example, in, pic related I used a purple-ish color very desaturated.
I just realised I always understood multiply wrong during all that time, and I'm kind of pissed off.

I think you have a solid grasp of values. Maybe try to simplify them a bit more, that helped me a lot in the past. Use only three values - 10%/50%/90%, and try to deconstruct the ref with those three values into something recognizable and appealing. I used to do it with screencaps of films or paintings.

>Is there a secret to getting a good brush that blends?

Nope. I used to do the same thing as you: paint>blur/smudge>repeat. Photoshop has kinda shitty color blending. When I discovered the magic that is CSP and its watercolor brushes it changed my life. You just gotta try different tools out until you come across something you, personally, like.

You have a <value> that, inside the program, is specified by a number. The number is either 0 or 1, or any value in between 0 and 1. Meaning 0 = Absolute black and 1 = absolute white. And decimal value between 0 and 1 is a shade of gray.

Once you understand this, you can understand how the multiply layer works. The colors you have on your flat color layer have a certain numerical value of Hue, Saturation and Luminosity. When you apply a multiply layer above, the layer quite literally multiplies the value of the layer directly below it times the value on the multiply layer. So, if you have a 0.5 gray on the layer below and another 0.5 gray on the multiply layer, the equation will be 0.5x0.5=0.25, meaning the value shown on screen will be a 0.25 grey (a darker shade of grey).

It does the same with Hue and Saturation, which will help you understand how the color varies if you multiply by a warmer or a colder color.

Hope this helps.

You don't necessarily have to download CSP. Photoshop has some wet media brushes that do color blending. You can sorta modify them to make them softer or harder to your liking. You can identify them by right-clicking the brush tool and selecting the option that has a small water drop over the brush icon.

But at some point maybe you'll realize that, while Photoshop is a great tool for photo editing, it isn't so great for painting. Photoshop is good at doing many things, while other software like Clip Studio or Krita are really great for one specific thing: drawing and painting. Which is why they have dedicated color blending brushes that are easy to find and use, and have color blending engines that achieve a more appealing result than photoshop.

Hello beg. Today i had a revelation. While i was copying gesture / sketch from this old master called Delacroix i wondered why ALL THREE art books i have been through included such simple crude sketches from him (while he made mighty grand stuff) and put it on full page as the best piece ever (while showing way more complex and better pieces in smaller areas). And while i was copying it i realized the grand truth of gesture. When master does gesture, it floats, it moves, it uses minimum amount of strokes to tell as much as possible, it even exaggerates the object.

I am so pitiful beg in comparison all my 3050 gestures i made so far are utterly shit and broken. They arent drawings. They arent even diagrams. They are broken diagrams. The only saving grace is that the time wasnt complete waste. I wouldnt understand this without the prior grind. When i first saw Delacroix sketches in KtD or DoRSoB i only saw curious scribbles. I think i now understand why people can point out when some drawing was made by tracing photo or model. Its stiff, lifeless, a diagram.

Now all whats left is to figure out how to actually apply any of this into actual drawing process. To draw more than what i just observe. Or how to observe the reference on deeper level. Begtard /blog

you need to experiment as the other anon said. Smudge tool is utter shit. You want blending tool or some fancier app which simulates mixing colors or water. Krita, CSP, Rebelle, Corel Painter. BTW even in shitty app like gimp you can achieve good "blending" effect with proper brush. You want something asymmetrical with very fuzzy edges so nobody can see the single strokes. And instead of smudge you use eraser (with same brush) on areas where you want to blend into lighter tones.
