If you are a /beg/inner or /int/ermediate in art, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice.
Use this thread instead of making new threads or post in the drawthread with fundamental exercises.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS wide using one of the following methods:
1. screenshot the image and post that instead
2. change camera capture settings to something smaller
3. send to computer and resize in MSPaint

TRY TO BE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK.
When giving feedback, avoid vague "advice" - point what's wrong and try to give the anon you're quoting a clear direction to improve their art (study heads < watch THIS VIDEO about head structure, read THIS SECTION of THIS ARTIST'S BOOK, etc).
You, feedback seeking anon, should also try to be clear and concise when asking for critique/help. When posting your artwork, say what you want help with, and what's your goal with the study/artwork.

What I usually do is first sketch it roughly and then put the opacity of that layer down, make a new layer and draw on that.
Sometimes a few layers over and over like that until I get the shapes right.
Maybe want to try that.
You can start coloring whenever you want really but if your lineart sucks the rendering won't help that much unless you know what you're doing and you're just using the lineart as a guiding sketch.

You mostly just need to draw more stuff, experience will be your best teacher. It's better to spend 1-2 hours drawing a bunch of stuff (whatever you enjoy to keep it fun) than it is to draw one thing and waste time waiting for feedback.

That said what jumps out to me about this particular piece is your perspective. Things that are further away from us appear smaller. We're looking at the candle from above, the bottom of the candle is further away from us than the top, so the ellipse that makes up the bottom is smaller and the 'walls' of the candle diminish back in space, which means they won't look parallel like how you have them, they'll appear to converge like how railroad tracks appear to converge in the distance. Perspective can take a long time just to wrap your head around the rules of how it works, but just knowing the "Things appear to get smaller as they get further away" rule will be the most helpful to keep in mind as you start out.

Try not to bog yourself down with theory, advice, rules, and whatnot (it's easy to feel overwhelmed and hopelss in the face of it all), by far the best use of your time is to observe, practice, review, and repeat. Play around and have fun, experiment and see what happens. This isn't school where if you don't get the right answer you get punished, you're teaching yourself and every failure is a lesson to learn from. That perspective lesson was hiding there in your reference image, you just needed to look carefully to find it.

There's a million ways to deal with it. Small improvements lead to compound results over long enough time. So as long as you do your due dilligence and approach each day with the mindset of improvement (or the very least maintenance) you'll just keep getting better. It's going to take a lot of time and a lot of work, there will be really good days and really bad days, but if you keep showing up and do the work then you'll improve. No one goes to the gym for a day and expects to walk out ripped, nor do they kick themselves for not being able to lift as much as the guy whose been going there every day for 5 years. you're training your body and your mind and it just takes time before any noticeable results start to appear, so just hang in there.

kids doodle in the margins of their homework and draw sonic shooting goku with a gun. They accidentally get marginally better over several years just from that mindless time-filling activity. If you approach drawing with the mentality of getting better, you'll soar past any 15 year old whose been mindlessly doodling since she was six. Some kids are prodigous but that just goes to show that it doesn't take a herculean effort to achieve those results, you just have to draw a lot, and the more focused you are on actually learning to improve the faster it will be.

If you're lucky you've got 40-50 years left in you so its far from 'too late' for you, and I've seen people who've started way later than you have and skyrocket to becoming phenomenal artists in the span of just a couple years starting from absolute zero. Drawing is a hobby and a recreational activity, it's not something with a finish line. It seems your biggest struggle right now is not your techinical ability, but your sense of doubt, so maybe take some time to really contemplate why you're doing this in the first place, if it's something you really REALLY want then you'll do whatever it takes to get it.

Everytime I try getting into studying fundies full time It just kills my art drive quickly for some time even if the days before I was pumping out art decently enough. I k ow they are important since I am looking for a good understanding of proportions, 3d space, appeal and everything really, but I'd rather just draw from life and emulate other people's art styles for understanding shape and appeal. How do I get more disciplined in gener if I am specifically looking for a technically competent art style, especially character art and dynamic poses in general? How far will just drawing from life and studying artists I like for 1 or 2 hours per day + drawing mainly from imagination while attempting to not set any sort of comfort zone and be as varied as possible? My main goal is to get good at figure drawing (specifically stuff like people, animals, etc). It seems I'm getting mixed signals from here though. One side says I need to learn the absolute bear bones basic shit (like when I attempted to do and failed miserably to do earlier today) But then I see other artists here who only focus on big yard. One in particular is either /int/ or master tier in regularly gets commissions. ( >>6364360 &

I don't have a pepper so I used an apple. And I don't know how to shade so I just tried to copy the texture. I definetely didn't use 40 minutes for this exercise, so maybe that's why it's not very good. I'll pay more attention to the subject next time. Left is from memory and right is from observation.

If you want to do figure drawings then I suggest you do some timed gesture as a warm up when you draw. It helps you focus on the overall picture rather then the small detail that most people get stuck on. If you want a schedule it would be timed gesture, one fundamental(anatomy, perspective, ect), master studies, and free drawing.

I dont think its possible to learn INT topic like drawing people from imagination without at the same time memorizing basic anatomy proportions and stuff
>>6367429
Your apple from imagination is surprisingly good. Btw you shade by repeatedly hitting paper with your pencil. You simply hit the dark areas more often than the brighter areas. Keep going
>>6367418
You are getting mixed signals because there isnt one definitive way how to master such subjective craft as art is. But the logical and common advice is to first learn fundies like observation, line confidence and perspective. I recc book Keys to Drawing. It teaches all fundies plus more. It doesnt matter what subject you want to draw, you need observation for ALL of them. Construction is INT discipline aka when you mastered drawing what you see and want to draw from imagination.
>>6367298
I have already heard that all ones need to get gud is simply drawing from real life OR copying master works. Obviously i cannot vouch for such method to be the most efficient but multiple people told me thats all you need.

how about ignoring both of those and just drawing? stop caring, just grab a pencil and paper and draw while you watch things

just doodle shapes in perspective or build a visual library from what you see in movies and shows you're watching, ignore making it perfect or having certain goals, eventually you'll piece things together

turning off your brain is the key to drawing, because if you think too hard before you're even starting, you won't start

from the top compared to the bottom? yeah, some improvement. I would say try to break up the body a bit more before you try to do the whole figure, focus on just arms, hands, legs, feet, etc. and especially the connection points like shoulders hips, waist. After that then put them all together. Alternately try using simple shapes instead so you don't have to juggle anatomy on top of everything else.

my faces started to look much better, after i followed the recommendation fromanother anon here, who told me to practice skulls. so i did that and aditionally watched and drew along "how to draw a nose/eyes/lips..." videos on youtube.

i also drew face anatomy from pinterest photos and sketches. i think this kept me occupied a few weeks. then, when i started copying morpho recently it sort of clicked and my faces started to look "alive" more consistently. top right guy in pic related is one of morphos examples.

keep in mind i did drawabox until after the 250 boxes challenge and i never really bothered to learn proportion just yet. i think the improvement came after i realized that i had to put the smallest features in the face in perspective to make it come together. they look like small caricatures mostly. i also haven't approached shading and did not actually study loomis.

In this case I used a fight club scene as a reference and then painted the same way you would paint on a real canvas, first you do the farthest things until you get to what is in front. This is the first time I've made a background so I didn't complicate my life with making it detailed and I knew from the beginning that I was going to apply blur to everything anyway.

Oh cool, that makes things a lot easier, I don't know why I never thought about using background from other media

Ultra /beg/ here:

How would you rate this guy's... uhhh what's it called... construction? Process? Style? I've seen people here in other places That you should be drawing what you think parts of the body are shaped like (ellipsis/rectangles for certain limbs, maybe a circle for the head tits and ass, etc) before you move any further. What exactly is this guy doing? Is he just more skilled to the point where he doesn't need to do that (If that's what he's doing)?

TLDR: What is this guy doing and why is it or is it not important?
