The reason why people are so LORE obsessed these days is because everyone wants to make their own original story but nobody wants to put in the effort to actually make it.
For every person who produces something, there are 500 ideas guys who just hyper fixate on LORE and never make anything out of it.

Before the internet, the only way to get your ideas recognized was to make something out of them. Write a book, compose a song, etc. Nowadays you can just post one of the 20 main characters of your homestuck scale webcomic doing a tiktok meme, get 3,000 likes, and then close your laptop because you got the dopamine you wanted.
There's nothing meaningful or artistic here, its just hanging out in social circles and indulging in activities that amuse and entertain you.
If you want to tell a story to the world you have to work beyond selfish goals such as admiration and recognition. When these things are your driving factors, you won't have the energy to do anything long term, you'll take the quickest route which is drawing pin-ups and memes.

Realistic well made art mightve impressed some people many years ago but the market's oversaturated now. The market now demands artists who can craft interesting narratives and compositions in their artwork.

That's going to be teaching some odd lessons to the man. It's not even like he went out his way to make it viral, all things indicate that it should have been ignored like the rest of his work.

I know how it feels to have your work ignored constantly. It's not fun and can be spirit breaking, the only difference between me and him is that I opted to understand this period and embrace it in a way. So you just... make up your own character? Ok, got it. But then you just stop there? You don't make any stories, comics, animations, anything for them to do? You just write up a few paragraphs of "lore" about them.

I don't get it. How is that in any way creatively satisfying? When I was 6 years old I would make up my own superheroes, but I would actually make comics about their adventures & tell all kinds of stories with them. Because that's just... what you do when you create a character? A character in a vacuum, without a story is just... not finished? I genuinely can't wrap my head around this OC mentality. It just seems like an incredibly lazy, easy-way-out to approach making something.

It's not that weird to make original designs, since there's a whole tradition of art just called "art" which just paints or draws or sculpts or whatever characters that not always have connections to anything else. It's not required. That's not the problem with making an OC. Lacking lore or story isn't a problem, and having lore and a story if not presented well to an audience is actually a detriment because people won't invest time into learning it so you'll end up disappointed. OC creators with whole lore/stories tend to be worse than ones without lore/stories 95% of the time for this time. What matters is: is your character's design appealing? Only once you have that box checked do you move on to giving them further details and ways to communicate that to your audience, so they feel attached and invested. The problem with making stories is that much as most OC designs suck, most stories suck too. And often the people who criticize mere-OC creators for not providing stories suck at both. Maybe you suck at both, I don't know. But it happens a lot. Story-writing is even harder to do well than creating a nice design. Even people with good OC designs make the worst lamest stories, and there are people with the audacity to think they do fine just because they have a story, regardless of its quality. Not only is their story crap but their OCs are ugly too. It's not a surprise nobody likes any of it. If you're going to do anything make sure you do it well.
