The general thread for Manga / manga-styled comic-making, manga-style illustration and related comic work.

Support each other and talk about your work or the work of others that excites you. Inking, character design, paneling / layout, writing, planning, and other discussions are all welcome.
Post resources, questions, in-progress pages, breakdowns of other works, etc. If a work is not yours, credit the maker (unless it's fucking obvious like a full page of One Piece or something).
Thanks to everyone for making /mmg/ a level-headed and helpful place. Remember, drawing and making comics and manga are difficult endeavors, and we're all in this struggle together.

Some western / indie publishers of Manga:

Saturday AM ( https://www.saturday-am.com/ )
> Digital indie magazine, seems to be on the up-and-up
> Open submissions for long-form series; also distributes series currently being published elsewhere.
> Regularly publishes one-shots, making it a good potential outlet for already-finished work.

Noir Caesar ( https://www.noircaesar.com/ )
> Focuses on black (specifically African-American) content, but seems willing to publish anyone good enough.
> Seemingly series-based only.
> No "magazine" style updates; series are updated on their own schedule.
> Seems less regular than Saturday AM, but also seems larger in terms of readership.

Oni Press ( https://onipress.com/ )
> Technically indie, but at this point large enough by comic standards to be mentioned in the same breath as other publishers.

Antarctic Press ( https://antarctic-press.myshopify.com/ )
> Longtime large-indie publisher of OEL / manga-esque books.
> Seemingly taking submissions at present if http://www.antarctic-press.com/html/submissions.php is anything to go on.

Yen Press ( https://yenpress.com/ )
> Started out as a small indie publisher of original / Korean material, and has grown reasonably popular since.
> As of 2016, it is also one of the western arms of the Kadokawa Corporation, with Kadokawa owning a 51% stake.
> Editorial inquiries can apparently be sent to yenpress@yenpress.com, however, they apparently are not open to new submissions at this time.

Viz Media / Viz Originals ( https://www.viz.com/originals )
> *The* western manga publisher.
> Currently in the exploratory stages of setting up an English label.
> Submissions are open and several books have been announced. However, progress on the label seems to be moving very slowly.
> Still might be worth a shot anyway.

Shrine Comics ( https://shrinecomics.com/ )
> Small indie manga publisher
> Seemingly attempting to make the transition to physical volumes
> Allows crossposting to other sites

>> No.6352780

Other open comic publishers:

Dark Horse ( https://www.darkhorse.com )
>Dark Horse still welcomes your submissions, and all submissions will still be reviewed, just as they always have been.
>All unsolicited story/series proposals must have a full creative team on board. Writer-only proposals will not be reviewed.

Image comics ( https://imagecomics.com/ )
>Image Comics only publishes creator-owned material. They do not contract creators; they’re only interested in publishing original content for which you would retain all rights.
>Image Comics publishes creator-owned/creator-generated properties and THEY DON’T PAY PAGE RATES. Image takes a small flat fee off the books published, and it will be the responsibility of the creators to determine the division of the remaining pay between their creative team members.

Drawn and quarterly ( https://drawnandquarterly.com/ )
>Please email a low resolution PDF with at least 20 pages of comics and cover letter to submissions. Do not send dropbox links, scripts, or proposals. Please read our submissions FAQ.

Fantagraphics ( https://www.fantagraphics.com/ )
>submission page: https://www.fantagraphics.com/pages/faq

Top Shelf Productions ( https://www.topshelfcomix.com/ )
>Regarding submissions, we're easy. Just email us a download link of what you'd like us to review. NOTE: We cannot accept cover letters, plot synopses, or scripts unless they are accompanied by a minimum of 10-20 completed pages (i.e., fully inked and lettered comic book pages).

Is this right to left?

The chick looks like she is being restrained, but her mouth looks like she's laughing about it. The arms also have very poor perspective and anatomy, you're not conveying the space and movement well.

I would also suggest moving her head over in the last panel so that the thought balloon doesn't cover her eye.

The little joke about her being imagined 'shoujo style' is also strange, since everyone on that page is drawn in the same style.

i guess this is more of a writing question but i think it's pretty relevant
how do writers manage to have different subplots that connect together, weaving them in a balanced and interesting way, pacing them right, making sure it all neatly fits together?

one example is fullmetal alchemist, i find it extremely impressive how she managed to have all these subplots with so many different characters, each with their own goals, motivations, and circumstances, each having their part in developing the plot until it all comes together in the eventual finale. doing something like this feels nearly impossible to execute.
ive heard people work backwards but this feels constraining to me. if i have an established endgoal and i tunnel vision on it then ill end up making decisions solely for the sake of reaching it which im afraid will lead to writing events that'll feel forced and inorganic. Did she make it up as she went and it somehow all neatly came together? I have so many questions but is there something i could read that explains the art of doing this?

2 ways to interweave subplots:
1. They're thematically related
2. They complicate each other.

Most likely you're talking about #2, which means you'll need to understand how to write scenes and complications.

>> No.6356265

>>6356241
yeah #2, like X happens in A subplot which leads to X character telling Y character in B subplot something which leads them to doing Z in whatever in the main plot meanwhile in the C subplot etc etc. there's infinite possible ways to take a story and maintaining it all neatly in an interesting way seems daunting. even if it boils down to scenes and complications the thing im grappling with is the larger scope of it all

I guess this is what separate geniuses from the merely good lol. Anyways, if you want to have a serialization, all that matters is keeping your audience week to week and telling a good, minute story. Maybe someday you'll make genius plots, but basic storytelling comes first.

A. James is playing in the garden waiting to catch the bus when at one point he finds a ball

B. John was playing ball with Julia on the street while they were waiting for the bus, when a kick to the ball brought it into James' garden

C. Nick was left by his wife for a stripper so he got drunk all night, had to get up the next morning to go to work as a bus driver, and while driving he hits a child who was coming out of his garden to deliver a ball to two others on the other side of the road

That's easy; FMA fma has 3 main subplots A. The Eldric Brothers (Chinese Ninjas are introduced here), B. Scar (later he'll meet Dr. Marco and the Chinese loli), C. Mustang: all three have a common setting (the army + homunuculs-Father), just give personal goals to the characters (like any subplot) and there you have it

i can also puke out as many simple parables as you'd like but constructing an actual narrative is a completely different thing
i dont know how to respond if you think listing out 3 subplots completely encapsulates FMA's entire narrative. Besides leaving out a few smaller subplots (several of which end up conjoining with one of the main ones) it doesnt consider that even within those subplots there's many different things happening (sub subplots?). It's like you're telling me math as a whole is simple because you can do 2+2 while im scratching my head at people doing quantum field theory

If it is more monoweight lines then it tends towards deliberate and clean. Since I can immediately see if a line is bad i can redo it. But I can also only do such line drawings if there is a clear picture of what it is trying to do and that it is simple concept - this is rare.

Then there's your problem: you're not actually very good at line work to start with. That loose feeling is what you should be aiming for in your more structured drawings, but that's the part that's difficult. You need more practice.

>>6356651
In my opinion you're overthinking it. It's not unusual for a drawing to look jarring when you hide the sketch, because you're used to looking at more "information" and then suddenly it's gone.
Naoki Saito recommends filling a drawing in with greys before doing the lines:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=455OAQbNaBM
It's an interesting way of changing how you look at it after staring at the drawing for so long and helps you catch anything you might feel uncomfortable about later, but I'm not sure it's practical for a whole comic or if it'll help you.
Since you're erasing and redrawing already, try periodically hiding it as you draw the lineart to get a "preview". But I think it's normal for the lines to seem a bit strange at first, just because you looked at the version with the underdrawing a lot, so it feels uncomfortable and like something is missing.

I don't agree. The rightmost drawing does genuinely look better, and is plenty simple. If you can consistently draw like that and stay on schedule then you're already on the level of the average pro mangaka. This is the manga general not the anime general, and the right looks more distinctly "manga" to me than the left which looks more like the crappy "anime" deviantart drawings he's talking about, so idk why that guy's saying the opposite.

None of those lines seem unnecessary to me at all. They're all contributing to better defining the form. And I don't understand where you're getting this idea that one has to simplify to extremes when that's not at all a defining characteristic of manga. Just look at all these "unnecessary" lines.

There isn't a single unified "manga ™" look and if there were the right wouldn't be the dictionary definition of it. If anything it looks like something influenced by Ilya Kuvshinov.
Both are adequately drawn, so it just comes down to preference. I prefer simple drawings. That Anon doesn't, so I didn't factor my preferences into it when I responded to him. It's important taking a person's intent into consideration when giving critique.
It's a waste of time getting caught up on what looks "authentic" or doesn't. Solid black hair and few lines were standard in the 70's and common to this day in female demographic magazines. It doesn't mean much because there's an immense variety to how these comics can look. That's one of their biggest strengths.

>> No.6356689

I think it's definitely that. If you hide the sketch more often to check the lineart as you draw it should feel less uncomfortable.
I don't know if you roughly plan the values of the page beforehand, but once you spot the blacks and add the tones and textures that should help immensely too.
What makes that initial pass of lineart feel strange is that it's only one stage of what's supposed to be a whole. It's like an empty room.

Why are you trying to implied that I said otherwise? I'm saying there are more manga that look closer to right than left, in that most manga aren't cutting out any "unnecessary" details.
>It's a waste of time getting caught up on what looks "authentic" or doesn't

yo, heres some more hopeless. Trying to keep the protag faceless for now, but letting a few small features slip such as his eyes, skin color, scars etc. Got a lot of practice with shading so far, as well as drawing 'ethereal' characters. The Wish Giver is meant to be a fog-like being, with very little solid material in its form. I want it to come off as beyond human understanding, or at the very least supernatural/mystical in some sense.
The protag - who will get a name at some point - doesn't really have much of a character atm. I do plan on developing it, but currently am setting the stage for the driving point of the story.
This took me like 4 days to make, with probably like 6-7 hours of work. Still getting used to Krita, and I really need to start using a color palette (grey palette?) as well as actually do some concept art.
Feedback and flame much appreciated.

good stuff, I like how you stylized the wishgiver's dialogue and used a texture on him
middle left panel on p11 is probably the worst looking, but it's still readable
p11 panel 2 (dialogue above the eyes) could have been done better, without any separation between the different speakers' lines they run together, even if it's clear who's speaking
having dialogue in close proximity with no border can give the impression that lines were spoken without any pause between them, like completing each others sentences or interrupting someone, or that they're speaking over each other

That's way too general. What era and artists do you like, and what kind of work are you aiming for?
From the mid 80's to 90's you start seeing a lot more effects and patterns done with screentones rather than by hand, so that's something to watch out for. It's not universal, but if a pattern looks very regular and you see it often it's useful knowing it's a screentone you shouldn't be expected to copy.
Older horror like Panorama of Hell has a lot of black and very gritty textures you can be sure were done by hand. I think some of the gritty rock/brick textures are either drybrush or a grease pencil. As long as it's black on the page, it can be printed, so it's not unusual to have mixed media like that.

If that feeling bugs you a lot, you could try Fujita Kazuhiro's approach - he does his sketches very roughly and sets down just the minimum amount of details you need (pose, proportions etc.), and on top of that he draws the actual lines.

With this method, you don't have to rely on your undersketch as much for the details, but the drawback is that you very much have to ad-lib it. Try it out though

Are people in fact switching between several different brushes? Is it possible for one brush to do thin and thick lines without being some kind of super human with perfect control of pressure degree?

this is the default g pen, its physically impossible to keep it thin with the setting its already on. am I missing some kind of setting?

>all I find are mystical answers like "its different for everyone" "you gotta experiment".
You do have to experiment though. I don't like any brush I download as it comes, it always takes a little bit of tinkering. There's nothing "mystical" about opening the brush settings and fucking around until it feels nice to draw with.
>Are people in fact switching between several different brushes?
Yeah, duh. People do this in trad too. It's normal to switch between microns, dip pens and brushes. Same shit applies to digital.

Whether or not you want to or should switch between multiple brushes depends on the look you want anon. Whatever best helps you achieve that look is what you should do.

That said, I personally ignore the CSP G-pen for anything but fills. For inking I much prefer the default Mapping pen, as it has a sharper falloff and more uniform taper, which may give you the look you want. All lines in the attached pic were done with the same pen setting (20 px on A4, 350dpi) to give you an idea of the flexibility (much more than the default G-pen). If I want something with similar smoothness but the same sense of thin taper I will occasionally use the Turnip pen but I can't remember the last time I did.

Hope you find something you like anon!

I see, does drawing at a large resolution improve brushes like g pen? I guess I want to make it look like plain regular manga, but most of the time scanned pages are different sizes and qualities so its hard to tell what kind of brush they used to get the same effect. even the page you posted looks too "sharp" and the blacks are super vibrant for some reason, while manga somehow makes it look softer.

I worded this wrong. I know they're made by hand, I mean what kind of csp brush can emulate it.

>> No.6361036

This is more the nature of printing than anything else. The fuzziness happens via the absorption of ink on the page, and the softening of blacks happens through the fading and discoloration of the paper. Additional fuzziness and discoloration on both levels is heightened through the low-rez scanning that takes place. I guess you could post-process your pages if you really wanted it to look that way in digital presentation, but you wouldn't want any of that for printing because adding imperfections atop imperfections creates noise and disintegrates the final result. You would probably also want to be careful doing that during the drawing process because fuzzy edges makes filling difficult unless you do all your fills by hand.

It's worth noting a lot of web manga just lets things play out straight. If you really want that look though, post-process it rather than looking for fuzzy brushes.

>> No.6361040

>>6361036
Oh, adding to this also: it's a common practice to put a little bit of gauss blur atop pages to soften them slightly and let the screentones blend. I haven't done any of that yet because screentones make my tablet chug so I keep everything stock until export.

Figuring out where to cut your corners is a big part of it, yes. It might be more helpful to think of it as balancing your priorities rather than sacrificing quality.
Being fast is important when it comes to work, so it's not like you shouldn't be thinking of it, but focusing too much on it when you're starting out might end up tripping you up. Speed comes from experience and good decision-making more than anything else.
I try to keep that in mind, at least, because I have a big problem with a perceived lack of time, too, and in the end it costs me more time than it saves. With comics, consistency is the single most important thing.

what i can suggest is focusing a bit more on the lineart.
Pretend you actually have to use limited screentones that won't allow for a complex shading.
Do the shading of the body and the building with rough lines and add simple screentones, here and there.
Give up the paper texture too.
The simpler , the better.
Also you can have certain shadows fully inked in black.

I am not saying that it does not look good. I really like it. But since you said you want to go for a traditional look, these are some of the advices i can give you .

There’s no shortcut to making it look traditional while also keeping the artwork unchanged. It’s the way you drew it that fucks it up, the watery-like lines, the fucked up looking screentones and that shading that just makes it uncanny to begin with.

You just don’t want to work hard on it again because you are lazy.

A mature person would either ignore and not reply or take the advice and start drawing again.

You probably wanted some (you)s so you can shill for a bit to some virgin fags that instantly got a boner from those unrealistic proportions.

Leave the board , come back when you have changed the artwork and have a different mindset.

I'll be sidetracked on this comic in specific, but I'll make sure to finish it sooner than later!

btw, what font did you use in page 3?

You did a good job replicating the line style, it's really close. There are some bits where the lettering could be improved, such as the "For you, whatever you want!" bubble. Apart from that, I'm struggling to find anything to nitpick. Very well done, look forward to more of your stuff.

Also I was shameless enough to make the comic but not enough to attach my name to it lol sorry

Thanks! I kinda rushed it at the end just cuz I had it sitting around for a long time and wanted to get it out of the way, but I kinda regret not doing the bubbles how I did them at the start. Oh well, onto other things

I'm not a writer but I imagine you would start by laying out the main plot points of the story and working a backwards a to place characters in situations that would lead them up to that point. I imagine it would take a lot of tweaking but its like a puzzle. Right? I'm probably wrong.

How strict is Japanese copyright in-regards to characters clearly inspired from somewhere while not being a satirical parody? I know Japan doesn't care about parodies, but in this case my character is serious.

There is a very niche character (who uses a real world name) from a series (it's from a Nintendo franchise which has me worried) whose namesake, family origins, and namesake I want to pay homage to, but to be different enough to clearly say that the person isn't the Nintendo character. Namesake especially I plan on changing the kanji so that it's pronounced differently.

That's what I do, even shown some publishers the rough outline of where my series is going and that's partially why I've been having better luck than your average beginner's. Your average manga isn't prepared for at all, so yours being pre-planned makes a big difference.

There is no fair use at all in japanese law. If it's too close then if they feel like it they can sue you. The only reason fan created parodies get by is because 1. they can't take EVERYONE to court and 2. it would do more harm than good.
If you're talking about, for example, putting Blooperman, the superhero alter-ego of Dumb Kent in your story, you should be fine. Just keep in mind that if you're spinning it as serious then it reads less like homage more like simply ripping them off, no matter how obvious you make your intention.

Japanese law catch foreigners off guard sometimes. I looked it op once. Here are a few of the things that are illegal in Japan I recall:
Cutting line in a queue.
Accepting a fight
Giving wrong direction to a delivery person
Dumpster diving (In theory can give 10 + 3 years prison. Don't know if they overlap)
Spitting on the street
etc

And this is Nintendo we're talking about, even if the character hasn't been one they used in decades. My plan was to give the character a similar sounding name, and even her father sharing an equivalent name. (Albeit as a nickname) She has a clearly different family life and a clearly different design, (mostly due to my artstyle and age) but would be similar in personality.
>Just keep in mind that if you're spinning it as serious then it reads less like homage more like simply ripping them off, no matter how obvious you make your intention.
I planned on taking a one-liner about their family member dying when they were young and turn it into a serious part of their character. I wish I could give an example.

I'll try to paraphrase something I already have planned. Posting in a forum with pornography to the current publishers looking into my stuff lol. Changing the names, of course.
"I'm Cynthia, and this is my husband, Mr. Stone. His real name's Bob, he just got nicknamed Mr. Stone because he always throws rocks at whoever walks in our lawn."

The artist could constantly refer to thousands pages worth of manga to reference off of because the style is near one to one with One Outs (which also happens to be where the guy in the comic is from).
Not to say the anon is bad for doing this, but it should explain why it looks so polished.

>> No.6374177

>>6374168
You didn't have to call me out like that! It doesn't look polished because I had pages to reference from, but I will say I'm more used to drawing more complex illustrations so b&w line drawings are easier for me. Another thing is it's the same simple bg over and over and two characters just standing and talking so it's simple to do, but if it involved more complex backgrounds and designs or a lot of action, it would look much worse with my skill level

>> No.6374182

>>6374177
I didn’t mean for it to come off negative. The paneling is almost the exact same way One Outs would approach it. So I assumed you mostly used the manga for that. The art is less stiff than the manga, which is the only big difference.

aah well when it comes to the panels I drew the comic first in this notebook so I used the panels given to me. But it's undoubtedly a fan comic and intentionally taking style inspiration, I'm just a bit embarrassed about it being known that it's a fan comic lol

After the lines and grey tones I duplicated the layer with everything on it, added a slight motion motion blur horizontally to the duplicated layer, then lowered the opacity of that layer to idk 20-30%. Then I added a noise layer on top. I wasn't going for any kind of realistic print feel, I just felt like my art looked kinda meh and bland on it's own so I wanted to add shit to distract from it lol

I over thought this, her character is clearly different. I just wish I knew a serious example that had a character clearly referenced off of an established IP in a serious manner. I know Rurouni Kenshin 1 for 1 took designs off the X-Men but those are American.

I was intentionally drawing while keeping one outs' style in mind. There's a lot more line variation in one outs that I didn't even attempt because I'm not good at that. She's not a canon character, I just fantasize about an AU where she's part of the story

I looked to one outs trying to capture Toua's likeness and see how the manga handles gradients and contrast and stuff like that, but since I was forced to use the panels in the notebook, the compositions I chose were off the cuff trying to follow the ideas I had in mind. That's all! And thanks!
