I've done commission on rare occasions and it's really not worth it in my opinion. I rather have people pledge to my patreon. I've got a question about social media artists recently.

There's this new trend of drawing characters completely clothed but with emphasized curves, obviously with a focus on the tits, and then the like/retweet icons with some numbers beside them, giving the implication that it's a goal number to have them draw the character undressed next. And then these works reach the goal and well beyond it - the highest I've seen so far was one asking for 500 retweets and 1,000 likes getting 15k and 41k respectively.

Yet when push comes to shove these same artists will tell you that numbers don't mean anything, you shouldn't focus on that, do art for you, bla bla bla. Am I the only one bothered by this? So many people parrot the same shit and then turn around and do the exact opposite of what they tell everyone. Am I a crab? Perhaps, but I like to think not. I just think it's stupid how they also just finished dragging that one guy literally 2 weeks ago who posted the comic about not getting interactions for a work he spent days on while a crowd is yowling over some nsfw work or the trend of the day, but now this week they're literally posting works with no meaning or message and just tell the viewer "like and retweet this." I don't like the dynamic.

This is for improvement anon. Once you're comfortable with your level, you can start focusing on numbers.
That advice is given because people really don't know their skill, and assume they should start playing the numbers game ASAP, when they should be drawing for themselves and developing their artistic identity first, studying etc.

Hopefully I've made some meaningful connections with my following unlike these other artist. But you need to do it because you'll get nowhere like me. I've created games and music videos and artist still try to pull me down. You only have one life so do what you want.

Yes anon this is fucking obvious. You can't sustain an artist lifestyle without generating money through your popularity. What I said is that it shouldn't be focused on during the early stages because it's a whole other thing to learn.

I like what you're saying, but you forget that this was a huge topic early last year. Many smaller artists banded together and formed the #NobodyArtistClub tag, #Under1kArtist, #Under10kArtist, etc. and all the really big artists tried to cash in and ride the wave only to get torn down by the army of "little guys." Then the big fish backpedaled at lightspeed and changed their tones, and decided to preach about how numbers don't matter and they shouldn't be talking about themselves in such a light. Even though both points are objectively incorrect takes; art doing numbers is what is paying their bills, and truly nobody gave a fuck about the unknown artists until they got a little more ballsy about being unknown. Everybody can't be a winner for sure, but the people who "won" the art game on twitter sure do like to try and dress up the fact.

I'm just convinced that once a person reaches a certain amount of attention they just become a huge cunt. I wish I could be the one to "break the mold" and pay my bills just by drawing and also tell the unknowns that they're right, but it's a pipe dream as I don't have the time nor discipline to grind to reach a relevant status. I gave up years ago and only post little doodles, but I still pay attention to other who keep trying.
