If you are a /beg/inner or /int/ermediate in art, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice.
Use this thread instead of making new threads or post in the drawthread with fundamental exercises.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS wide using one of the following methods:
1. screenshot the image and post that instead
2. change camera capture settings to something smaller
3. send to computer and resize in MSPaint

READ THE STICKY:

TRY TO BE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK.
When giving feedback, avoid vague "advice" - point what's wrong and try to give the anon you're quoting a clear direction to improve their art (study heads < watch THIS VIDEO about head structure, read THIS SECTION of THIS ARTIST'S BOOK, etc).
You, feedback seeking anon, should also try to be clear and concise when asking for critique/help. When posting your artwork, say what you want help with, and what's your goal with the study/artwork.

I like it, it has a good comfy night feeling.
Some suggestions:
While the lineart has a very loose feeling, I'd suggest to keep it more clean or careful at the foreground and with more information (meaning, drawing more details or more accuracy in the objects you are depicting), also keeping the straights as consistent as you can, that alone gives the feeling of structure or that an object is solid, if you want to add variety, you can change the line weight or just have a set of different of techniques to approach various materials or to imply simplification and depth.
For lighting, I think the focus of the image is pretty clear and works nicely, just remember if you ever need to highlight something, you can always create a light source that helps contextualize your composition, for example if you want to have a better time rendering smoke or vapor you can add one small light source near it, rim lights also are a good option when you want to contrast darks or describe the form better with characters or things that blend in the shadows, for the background apartments, I'd still keep the straight lines idea, you still want accuracy for your structures, just that it doesn't pop out as much, for lights and shadows that's the value scale, just reducing it will create depth, keep the lightest lights darker than your lightest lights on the foreground, same idea for the darks, it gets more complicated than that with other compositions, but it's a good starting point.
The composition works but in a 2nd look it's always good to keep the context or idea of what's going on clear for the viewer, there's a relationship with that cat and the girl, but you want to tell what they exactly feel or have a clear emotional read, I'm not sure what to feel about them, technical skill is needed, but the nuance comes from how they are interacting, it's about looking at real life and see these scenarios to grab a sense of it, it's less prescriptive and more personal.
Hope it helps.

Hello beg, today i was slow as fuck. Still finished!

>>6294891
Its hard to properly describe the feeling but yes, it is definitely doing something to my right brain hemisphere (the mute one which is used during complex long tasks like the drawing). I got faster and i no longer struggle copying pieces with too many "scribbles" nor i get overwhelmed when i am drawing complex stuff like ornaments or foliage. I also started to feel the form. Its kinda like the book said: gesture isnt something you learn by reading about it or watching it. You learn it only by doing it. IF nothing else it is making me drawing a lot from reference and building drawing habits which frankly a lot of begs dont have from what i have seen here or on discord.

Altogether, the posture and facial expression look cute. That said, while I understand that you were trying to do some foreshortening, the right wrist of the girl is misplaced in relation to her forearm; the joint seems to be situated in the middle of the back of her hand instead of at its base. Therefore, you should move her hand further to her right, until the base of the carpometacarpal joint of the thumb lines up properly with the outline of her forearm.

Her right foot has a similar issue, but less glaring; you should move it further to the right as well, and maybe depict it a bit sideways.

Perspective is all over the place. Its nice to draw boxes to help nail down whats where but it kind of looks like you eyeballed the angles of the boxes but forced whatever you drew in the box to be proportionate to the box instead of reality. You're spewing some DotRSotB tier BS. Hearing music is not a task and this applies mostly to types of tasks anyway. Drawing one image with your right hand and a different image with your left hand is something the vast majority of people can't do (supposedly da Vinci could, probably through practice, but there are a lot of post-industrial myths about the limits of human capability, so it shouldn't come as a surprise that multitasking is just a skill you can practice that we are told is "impossible"), as is reading a text while listening to (and processing) audible words, but listening to music while drawing has effectively no overlap.

The thumbnail is pretty cool, but up close it's a little wonky. The red hair going down looks really low res and needs some sharper brushes. The shape of the lips is a bit off too. I like the vines on the left cheek, the eyes, brows and forehead.

The rendering of the arms and legs is good, but there are a few issues with the contours of the picture.

Specifically, the outlines of the face, along with those of the strands of hair and the folds of the skirt, are too dark and defined for the style of rendering that you're going for (you should avoid using pure black unless necessary when coloring). Such contours end up taking away from the overall cohesiveness of the work; the face, in particular, ends up looking as if it was a cartoony face pasted on top of a semi-realistic body.

In general, as I see it, darker and thicker outlines tend to go better with flatter shadows, while thinner contours with brighter hues (when the outlines are present) are more suitable for pieces with diffuse shading.

Thus, I suggest that you try using brighter colors for said outlines; for example, a maroon red for the contours of the folds, a pinkish-brown for the lips, the nostrils and the eyes (excluding the eyelashes), and a chocolate brown for the strands of hair.

Lastly, you should add a bit of shading to the face, as it currently looks flat when compared to the rest of the picture.

Can someone tell me why this is symbol drawing? I was told symbol drawing is "drawing what you think something looks like instead of what it actually looks like", but that doesn't really make sense because I drew while looking at the reference. If it's symbol drawing simply because one of the eyes is off the mark then isn't that a matter of accuracy and not symbol drawing?
If it's because the nose looks off, how is it symbol drawing if I don't think a nose looks like that in the first place? It just became wonky in the process of copying off the ref.

The jawline is literally a line. The only thing you can get wrong is the accuracy. So pretty much symbol drawing = inaccuracy. Congratulations, you are retarded.
>>6299117
Yeah it's weird because I studied Bargue Plates and felt the form when I drew the eye. Like I literally felt it wrapping around the eyeball, like I was feeling the form, the roundness of it, everything. It was almost like the eyeball was there in front of me. That's how I drew the left eye and you can see how I felt the form when I did that 45 degree turn on the right. Idk what more you expect from me other than accuracy.

What I tell myself when I draw something is “how much of the (nostril) am I ACTUALLY seeing?” Like in your drawing the nostril is pretty big, you’re drawing it big and round because that’s what you think in your head is what it is. But no, the nostril is a void of nothing. It’s not a dark circle, it’s literally nothing. It’s the folds of the skin that make it appear that way. Once you start seeing things for what they really are, and being honest with your drawings, is when it will click for you. Give it practice and time!

Thanks anon so symbol drawing seems to be a spectrum and not black and white? Like I slowly go from 1 to 100 instead of going from 0 to 1?
>>6299132
All you said was "just look at it, everything is symbol drawn". That's far from helpful. You're just one of those useless crabs who complained back when I drew anime faces that it was symbol drawn when anime is literally symbols. The other two anons are actually helpful.

Also should I draw a box for the nose and ears and eyes and everything? Will that stop me from symbol drawing? What should I do if people still say I symbol draw even after boxing everything out?

I’d focus more on construction, and less on rendering at this stage you’re at honestly. Cause once construction clicks for you, you’ll understand what the anon is saying. He’s right too, so don’t get your panties in a bunch lmao.

I suggest that you add some highlights to the hair of the woman (they could be pastel yellow in color), that would help to add further volume and texture to it.

The reflected light under her eyebrows looks too much like makeup; judging from photographs of faces illuminated by flashlights, the purplish luminosity coming from below should also be reflected in the area of her lower eyelids (pic related).

Also, I believe that the hue of her freckles could be slightly redder, but that's mostly a matter of personal taste.

What do you mean? Isn't cubing part of construction? I thought rendering was shading and stuff. I generally construct my heads using the Huston/Loomis methods but haven't tried cubing every feature (which should also fall under construction if I'm correct).
Anyway I have been grasping construction since the past week according to anons here so I should be ready.

>>6299148
No idea what the fuck cubing is. I just mean like yeah loomis type stuff. Honestly it seems like you’re over thinking things. Just keep drawing. Keep copying, drawing, doodling, and you’ll get there. Try not to overthink it too hard. Always draw with the intention of being better than your last. Doesn’t always have to be better but having the intention is important.

become anti-semitic and fight back against google. imagine doing something a fedposter might suggest if they wanted you to actually be effective instead of just becoming media fuel and getting arrested without doing damage. I'm not saying do it, but just imagine...

No, that's against this boards rules. Otherwise the board would be filled with requests. A lot of media boards like /v/, /tg/, /vp/, have drawthreads where you can take requests. You could make your own dedicated thread on /i/ or participate in the many threads there.

The lineart is good, but the highlights of the hair seem to be all over the place; you should try to arrange them in concentric rings, encircling both the head and the ponytails, kinda like levitating hula-hoops (I believe that three rows of highlights would be sufficient).

Also, her wrists look quite brittle, so I recommend that you make them slightly thicker.

It's just like that sometimes (I watch a bunch of professional artists on twitch and sometimes the same people hammer out amazing shit in like an hour but other times they will spend a week futzing with one drawing and barely seeing any improvement and in the worst cases just end up scrapping it because it was a personal project, so it happens to everyone), but honestly I've seen you posting progress on this and it's looked maybe 1% different each day for like... three or four days now? Agonize over it less, and iterate. You're not going to produce something far above your current skill level by working on it at your current skill level for a much longer time, and you're not going to improve quickly by slowly drawing one thing rather than quickly drawing a lot of things. Since you were struggling with the hands in particular for a long time, a good starting place may be using lineofaction's hand and foot studies option with something like a five minute time limit (or less if you're feeling daring) and hammering out about 15 of those a day for a while, just trying to learn the structure and "feel" of the appendages. 5 minute poses and 1 minute poses (gestures) from that site are a good idea for improvement at drawing people, too.

The point is that you improve WAY faster by just iterating than by polishing one thing (drawing more times, rather than for more time), and to really do that you have to have low attachment to the things you draw and just go at it, getting that pen mileage and learning to simplify things efficiently without losing the underlying sense of structure.

Im just too tired to do too much everyday, 60-90 per night max, but I try to do doing something everyday just to build habit. But youre right. Maybe I should just do short exercises on the week and leave the complete works for the weekend.
