If you are a /beg/inner or /int/ermediate in art, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice.
Use this thread instead of making new threads or post in the drawthread with fundamental exercises.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS wide using one of the following methods:
1. screenshot the image and post that instead
2. change camera capture settings to something smaller
3. send to computer and resize in MSPaint

TRY TO BE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK.
When giving feedback, avoid vague "advice" - point what's wrong and try to give the anon you're quoting a clear direction to improve their art (study heads < watch THIS VIDEO about head structure, read THIS SECTION of THIS ARTIST'S BOOK, etc).
You, feedback seeking anon, should also try to be clear and concise when asking for critique/help. When posting your artwork, say what you want help with, and what's your goal with the study/artwork.

It's an ok piece in general, but the head of the character seems a bit too broad. Part of that impression is due to the placement of the shadow on his right cheekbone. The edge of the lit part of that plane should be a bit closer to his eye (specifically, nearly below the outer corner of the eyebrow), otherwise, that cheekbone would end up looking excessively pronounced.

However, just pushing the shadow a little to the front of the face is not enough, since then you'll end up giving your character a very wide head if seen in profile; therefore, you should also move his hair along with the shadow, until the front of the skull seems of a more adequate width (pic related).

Lastly, if we take perspective into account, the head of his pickaxe-hammer should be bigger, since in the current picture it's looks too small and fragile.

Revisited Akihito Yoshitomi. If your aren't familiar with this playlist, I recommend it as an alternate "constructive anatomy" system, or at least professional example.

I did that as long as I could stand and then did this. It's, like most of my work, marginally better than the ones before it. The only thing I really leaned here was how much easier the parts of the body I just practiced constructing were vs the ones I just winged.
I need to go through the whole playlist and see how much faster and more actually I can draw the whole figure.

Aside from the pose, and I get what you were going for, the issues are:

>arms too short

>her left butt cheek is sticking out further than it should which really makes the pose awkward

You're almost there. Study natural poses. This one feels like it's from imagination and you're not quite there yet.

just watch a few of this guy's videos on armor.
Maybe try Matt Easton and Todd's Workshop or even just visit a medieval reenactmenr group.
Often armor made them look quite silly.
Like chainmail, it would have a soft under layer of fabric and it made the head look bigger and rounder and it would also be strapped around the mouth.
Chainmail was a lot tighter fitting than in the movies and movie armor often is not to be effective but to show who the hero is.
weirdly enough, it is usually the extras who are dressed correctly and the hero who looks like he woke up too late and rushed to the battlefield with half his clothes on and often not even a helmet or shield.

I think that you have achieved a good sense of flow. That said, have you considered flipping the first and last panels in order to appreciate the change in the directions followed by your gaze?

I personally believe that if you inverted them, the gaze of the viewer, by following the left-to-right direction of the steps of first girl, would come across the face of the second one in a more direct way.

I would also suggest that you experiment with flipping the last panel, mostly to give a sense of symmetry, as well as in order to break the pattern established by the middle ones, and to try to convey a sense of back and forth, as if the gaze of the viewer was sliding down a zigzag line.

What causes the forms to be so scribbly? I have the same issue going on in this post and feel like no matter what I do when I try to draw over gesture, the forms I do look so bad despite it being the only thing I practice at times. I got it better by eyeballing than using a ruler. When I decided to use a ruler, it was 100x worse than any of these (I had to erase the whole thing).

Anon here is how you think of it logically. You pick the direction for the main light and those parts that face the light direction should have the highlight spots and be generally bright. Those that face away from the light spot especially perpendicularly will not get hit by the light rays of the main light. There can be secondary light sources and/or reflected lights that will still illuminate them but they do not nee highlight spots.

I remember reading "The Phoenix on the Sword" and (not spoiling) there is a scene where Conan is lacking armor and it costs him.
He gets stabbed where he is unprotected.

Also it is quite cool if a Leader or King is in the midst of battle, covered in mud and blood, indistinguishable from ordinary soldiers due to losing his horse and shield, meanwhile his men are trying to find him having to choose between losing the battle or their King.

Hi, I'm the same anon that you replied to.

Upon further inspection, it turns out that you will actually need to enlarge the ear significantly more that I had originally anticipated. I think that I was somewhat distracted by your overall good rendering, so I didn't really notice the extent of the flaw; I guess you can take that as a compliment.

Ideally, the ear would have to be larger by a third (pic related), if not even more, so that its length is properly encompassed by the distance between the eyebrows and the base of the nose.

esdeath anon, how long are you spending on your drawings? Are you drawing from reference? When you draw from ref, how long do you spend on each drawing?

I think you need to start spending 20-30 minutes on a single drawing. Use a kneaded eraser to lighten your lines, so you can make the drawing in multiple layers. Slow down and really observe. Every point, line, shape, angle, negative space, etc. needs to be carefully considered. Every line should be carefully checked and compared to the reference. "3 looks, 2 thinks, 1 application."

Composition: you generally dont want to put the main object in dead middle unless you have interesting stuff elsewhere. Keys to Drawing has whole chapter about it.
Tones: You are scared of using darker tones. This gives the image a very weird look. The image would pop like crazy if the planets or sky was darker. Or the ground. Or The shadows. Turn your pic into grayscale to see what i am talking about. You want to use whole value spectrum, not just light gray.

Really?

Please check yourself into the hospital for tendonitis, because that's not possible for a beginner in a month. Really, you skipped a lot of the book and called it "done". That's exactly how you end up like Esdeath-kun. Please go through the courses and books carefully and do everything exactly as you're told. That is the fastest way to improve. That is also what most people don't have the discipline to do, which is why they stagnate and regress.

protip: if you don't draw/study from references (life, photos, master/pro works), you are ngmi. again for the arrogant fucktards: if you only draw from imagination you are NEVER gmi. you're not a creative genius, you're not an exception. simple as. nuff said.

I'm going for more of a girly cartoony vibe

You really shouldn't be worrying about style at this point. Learn everything else and your style will more or less come from it.
As of now this looks more like a random scribble I'd see on a school desk than a proper style.

All it took me to draw clean lines was sharpening my pencil. So much for "dirty linework".

Second attempt on a ten minute figure after an anon told me to try out the Loomis mannikin. Think I'm going to forego temporarily the next chapters of Vilppu (tone and anatomy) to go do master studies for a few weeks.

I mean at least try to get the proportions/oritentation right if you are going to use a box form.

You can do better.

if youre liking the course keep doing it, but I found Vilppu's approach (or hampton) to gesture a lot better than trying to draw perfect contour lines before one understands form/proportion/human anatomy. imo eviston and proko only do it convincingly because theyve drawn figures (from gesture to fully rendered) thousands of times, but its really an unfortunate instruction for a beg.

Mm, I agree with you but I think if I'm keeping in mind that I'm not needing to do ace anatomy before I learn it, I'll be okay.

that's not how it works, though. you can't just 'work' a style into animation. you have to adapt it in some way because the way it is animated is another art style on it's own.
