This style is literally Tumblr art. VIvian got her popularity in the tumblr heyday and hasn’t changed her style at all. Her works are all full of “tumblr sexy men” and lgbtshit. Also we definitely had, and have always had, cute thing aesthetics as well - just look at children's toys throughout history (teddy bears for example). Cute has just always been seen as an immature thing up until recently - and japan has done it for so long as Japanese women purposely try to act immature as it's seen as attractive.

So yes - the East has had "cuteness" as a stronger aesthetic value for some time for cultural reasons, but General Visual appeal is absolutely not an Eastern thing, or Western thing for that matter, it's just human nature.

Sure, it was definitely "the style at the time", but it was also no way near as cookie cutter as the "bean mouth" period we've recently gone through. Cartoon Network shows still looked like Cartoon Network shows, Nicktoons like Nicktoons - they were similar but distinct.

Also I just want to make clear. I don't hate Japan per se, if anything I've become indifferent to their country/culture, it's more so the attitude some people have towards Japan and Japanese culture that kills any interest I could've had in anything Japan-related. Imagine fetishizing a country just because you like how a handful of people from said country draw like, nobody acts like that towards America and America has it's share of influential artists in many fields.

In my experience, people who don’t like anime and related things are just becoming a bit more vocal because of how annoyingly mainstream and a main topic of discussion the medium has become. If it wasn’t for shitty anime fans people wouldn’t give a shit about it.

Not to mention proportions. Anime fans are nagging, annoying, aggressive, close minded, sometimes creepy as fuck in several ways, infectious and toxic, while “anime haters” can only be described as annoying at worst. For me it's a mixture of "sparkledog" and "fujo". Like you can tell these designs are from Bio sheets from early 2000s deviant from the obnoxious color choices and detail overload.
