95% still globohomo for me.
2% then calarts,
1.8% then scott pilgrim-y cartoons, (things like panty&stocking and powerpuff girls are great though, it’s hard to explain. they feel sharply distinguishable, rather than rounded too-minimal and dull, to me.)
1.2% then the mainstream anime style that you see everywhere, where every character is exactly the same person, even across series.
anime/manga that departs from that’s completely fine, though, of which there’s a ton, like all the older manga, mature manga, and the new niche ones you can find sometimes, around.

my topic response’s also globohomo, but i still really like things like you posted.
my favorite comic artist of all time creatively moves through everything from trad painted realism to this, as it suits his story, and the result is stunning. because he’s a jack-of-all-trades, he brings all his skillsets into all of his panels, regardless of the style and mediums there, so intervals like your post just make his pages and contrasting stylistic panels spark beautifully with life.
so yeah, i totally feel your post. maybe this is one reason globohomo subtly bothers me.

>> No.6267424

>Talented sure, but boring.
I used to think about it similarly, and on the inside I knew it wasn't inadequacy but "it's boring" or "soulless" still sounds like cope even if it isn't, so I wanted a better explanation as to why it's unappealing. I let my autism assume direct control and discovered that 99% of "photo-realism" (differentiating from hyper-realism which is arguably something more interesting) is achieved with some variation of the grid technique.
In other words not only is the artist's output the same as a photocopier, the technique and process is also functionally the same. It's mindless autopilot, frankly tracing grants more benefits to your freehand ability if applied studiously.

I could see it being meditative for some people, but beyond that it's clear why a lot of artists don't appreciate it. Also I'm not sure if the image that anon posted is exactly the same kind of thing I'm talking about, it might be, but the cliche example I'm referring to is stuff like big graphite animal faces or water droplets. The ones who don't use a grid, yeah, amazing technique, and in those cases you can usually also find stuff from imagination they did which is more interesting.

i actually don't even think it's necessarily photorealism itself that is "uncreative" or "soulless", but most of the time the choice of subject is at fault.
in >6267038, the only thing the image conveys is "look!! just like in real life!!" but the thing is, in real life, no one would lose their shit over a paint splotch. there is nothing special about "realistic expressionless woman eye staring head-on at you"
here, the realism doesn't get used as a medium for a message, the realism IS the message.
i appreciate realism far more when the chosen subject has something to say, like, for example ken currie's paintings.

I honestly quite love the flat vector look, logos, icons and all that stuff, but a shit drawing is a shit drawing.
