Commissioned art should be fine for now; Commissions seem to come in two categories; You're being hired because they like your stuff (in other words, you're being hired because you're YOU), or because you're being hired to draw someone's OC or fav character (usually for something deviant).
AI may be good at drawing a random decent looking character stitched together from thousands of images, but it's not good at consistency, and it can't draw what it has no references to (like someone's obscure OC).

As for abstract/surreal/symbolic art specifically - it could be in trouble? It really depends on the particular look of their abstract art, for example I don't think I've seen AI art that looks like this pic. So it depends on whether AI can replicate said artist

Pretty strongly disagree with this, I think it's not going to get much better. Do you know how the AI improved? It wasn't because every time it "generates a image its getting rapidly better and better", it's because they essentially just feed the pattern recognition software more datasets (other people's art, which is why there's copyright debates around these things) - They've now fed this AIs somewhere around 6 billion images. How many more does it need to be fed to be considered "good"?

Where did this notion of AI allowing the masses to make art come from? Even without the AI stuff art has always been accessible, especially now, you can find every resource you need to become a literal pro for FREE online. If you like the way a specific artist makes something, there's a 70% chance they have a tutorial showing you exactly what they do, giving away the same brushes they use, showing you the same books they learned from. If you have enough motor skills to type on the keyboard, you can fucking draw. I highly doubt that people who say they "can't learn" really can't learn, it's probably more that they thought it'd be a lot easier than it turned out to be, and they quit before they started seeing results. Learning art is no harder than learning how to go to the gym regularly, learning another language, or learning how to code or any other skill. You don't expect to code for a week and be a full stack dev, you don't expect to go to the gym and get buff in a week, and you don't expect to be fluent in a new language after a week, or even a month, or even a year! I don't understand why people have this attitude towards art, it makes no sense. It's weird how people pretend it's being "gatekept" by artists or whatever when they're just not legitimately interested enough to put the time in. If anything, AI has the potential to make art less accessible for the masses. To make AI generated work you need a super powerful PC, or you need to borrow someone else's shit remotely. I highly doubt that after they train this shit to be competent in any way that it will continue to be free, or at least the best version of it anyways.
