This is a thread to discuss all kinds of digital drawing hardware: non-display graphics tablets, pen display tablets, portable tablets and more.

Why you should not trust youtube shills:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Twy5Wo8m284

If you have any additional questions, ask them.
Remember to ignore all chinese shills.

>I'm thinking of getting the Wacom One, should I buy it?
Fuck off retard. Ask a better question.

Recommended tablets:

>Intuos 3
Best screenless tablet. Look for one on Craigslist or Ebay.
>Intuos 4, 5 & Pro
Also good options. Will burn through your nibs.
>Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 Lite
Budget portable display tablet. Very solid drawing experience with Wacom EMR tech, but a small 10.4" display area.
>Used iPad Pro 2nd Gen 12.9"
Best option for a display tablet.
>Galaxy Tab S7+/S8+
Good premium alternative to an iPad Pro
>One by Wacom (not Wacom One)
Solid cheap option

Avoid:

>XP-Pen, Huion, Gaomon and every other Chinese brand
Poor build quality, lackluster pens, broken tilt, struggles to register light pressure, horrible customer support and the displays are not calibrated. All Chinese brands have the same problems. Check out the webm to understand how bad they are. Also watch out, Chinese companies shill HARD on /ic/; they do a lot of samefagging and frequently hurl personal insults.

>Microsoft Surface Pro
The N-Trig digitizer means you will always get wobbly lines.

>Lenovo
Bad drawing performance because they're not designed with art in mind.

>iPads (brand new) - Bad value
>iMacs and Macbooks - Never buy this garbage under any circumstance. It's a locked ecosystem with rubbish hardware you can't upgrade.

This is a thread to discuss all kinds of digital drawing hardware.

Recommended tablets:
>Pen tablets (non display)
Wacom Intuos
Huion Inspiroy
Xencelab Pen Tablets
XP Pen Deco

>Display tablets
Wacom Cintiq
Huion Kamvas
XP-Pen Artist

>Mobile tablets
Wacom MobileStudio Pro
Apple iPad Pro
Samsung Galaxy Tab

>General guidelines when picking a tablet:
- All of the recommended models are part of large lines with multiple sizes/generations available. Buy the biggest/newest in your budget. Medium-Large pen tablets or 16-24" display tablets are considered the sweet spot by most artists.
- If you don't see a tablet you're interested in listed, ask about it. This isn't a definitive list, just one to give you an idea where to start looking.
- Wacom is the industry standard, but are overpriced. Chinese brands have mostly caught up in the past few years and will provide a near identical user experience for a fraction of the price. The biggest downside is their customer support, so it's advised you purchase through a 3rd party like Amazon that will back you should you need to make a return.
- Avoid Surface Pros. The N-trig digitizer provides a mediocre drawing experience. There are alternatives to the surface pen that may improve it, but overall it's best to just avoid entirely.

>I've been using an Intuos for about 7 years? i am yet to find any glitches, problems with drivers

There's no way this is true. I had Intuos 4 and Intuos Pro for many years and used them with win7 and win10. I had frequent driver issues with pen pressure stopping working or glitching workspace and had to reinstall the drivers or restart the wacom service. And I heard numerous complains about the same kind of issues from art buddies. It's not that big of a deal to fix, sure. But I'll never believe the claims that Wacom's drivers are more stable and superior to xp-pen or huion or whatever.

>>6243159
I got 11" Ipad Pro 2021 over Ipad Air, because it was cheaper where I got it and the specs were better than Air's at the time. Though I don't feel like specs should matter if you're not trying to be ridiculous and make Ipad your main workstation, which is retarded because ios is trash. Even then, I don't think extra 2gb of ram is a game changer. All Ipads (even non-pro, non-air) are the same in terms of drawing experience, so used or the cheapest one you can get is the way to go, if you even need one.

Pens without batteries are better.
Tablets that are larger are better.
Tablets with the same aspect ratio as your monitor are better.
Tablets that are still supported and updated by their manufacturer are better.

512 levels of pen preassure would be enough if all of them would be on point without any jumps. People keep saying it's "better" but no one can give any actual reason why. I understand it's not "worse" but it's just specs gimmick like megapixels in digital cameras used to be be treated.

>calibrated out of the box
All the displays are inaccurate out of the box doesn't matter what brand. Once calibrated Wacom's displays are worse in range, accuracy, and they are less bright, it's just a fact. Cintiq's fans are notorious for being extremely loud and prone to breakage, they didn't release a firmware update for the fans until 3-4 years later. Their newest Cintiq Pro 16 model that was released 9 months ago has a defect where the screen is distorted and separated from the case, this still has not been fixed or addressed by the way.

>Wacom customer support is also a bit less dogshit than chinese companies
Wacom is made in China on the same assembly lines as Huion and XP-Pen and their support is infamously bad, they still send physical checks for refunds months after you request one.

>but basically their numbers even on an outdated display are a bit better in every way than huion's flagship

Okay...? That doesn't make any of them Chinese companies. Where a company is based out of has nothing to do with where their products are manufactured. I'm not the wacom shill that loses his mind over them damn chineses.

how the fuck does that make sense to you retards, it doesn't matter if the design is japanese if the actual manufacturing process is done by chinese people

if the parts are made in china, the product is assembled in china, and every hand that touches it prior to yours is chinese, then by all objective measure the device is chinese

It does chug in CSP tho and my screen auto dims if I’m at 100 brightness for like 5 minutes. Not a huge issue because i don’t need it, but still. I just happened upon a second-hand Tab S6 Lite (2019 model) this week and I've been using it every day. Ask me anything if you have questions regarding this tablet.

Tech side things I can say about it:
- The bloatware was minimal for once (might be country specific), only had Netflix and the usual jewgle apps
- I reset then removed all the apps I didn't want with ADBAppcontrol, including Samsung ones, installed Apex Launcher (v3.3.3) and the system is now pretty lightweight and straightforward, I haven't installed an adblocker yet since I'm mostly offline
- SPen is really responsive but it often depends on the app you're using, some apps suck, some apps are really tight and snappy with it
- I thought the pen would be bigger, I'm looking into getting a Staedtler Digital soon but otherwise it feels fine on your hand, it pales in comparison to Apple pencil though
- SPen button is a bit too high up for my taste, it only has one button
- SPen tilt and pressure sensitivity work fine
- Screen is sharp and the colors are good
- No fingerprint reader, cameras have okay quality

Drawing stuff:
- I tried 7 drawing apps so far: Ibis Paint X, Clip Studio Paint, Krita, Infinite Painter, Medibang, Concepts and Sketchbook
>Ibis Paint X
Riddled with ads, didn't even bother drawing, uninstalled right away
>Clip Studio Paint
It's my main program on PC but here it's fairly slow and the UX isn't made for touch screens. Feels too encumbered, uninstalled
>Krita
Same as CSP, extremely slow to load, bad PC-like UX, uninstalled
>Infinite Painter
Really like this one, straightforward and easy to understand, free version is fairly complete for the most basic stuff, very responsive, can erase with touch and draw with pen, good selection of brushes you can customize
>Medibang
Better UI than CSP and Krita, performance is okay, has everything you could need, too many unbearable ads, uninstalled

...cont.

>Concepts
I like this one the most I think, really fast and snappy, easy to use and configure, good selection of gestures and palm rejection, probably the best UX of all the apps I tested, love the color wheel and the way you can select tools, free version has limited layers and no selection, one time purchase is appealing
>Sketchbook
Already had used this quite a bit on PC and here it's the same, fast to launch and responsive, good UX, very natural brush response, has corner shortcuts but the gestures are fairly limited, has all the tools you need, no ads, no asking for money, good app

That's it.

Jumping off this question, there's a Wacom Intuos Pro Large on my local Craigslist for $150. Is this a decent buy, or is it a waste of money considering current tech? Surely it's almost a decade old by now, right?

I think that's the first version. That was sold in intuos3 years. It doesn't have best screen, and gets pretty warm from what I heard. Also there is stutter bug in newer os that can be resolved with having lazy nezumi enabled and set to 0, i read about it on polycount forums. For 100 I would get this. It's still usable despite being old, i think intuos 3 pen can be used with this. Also this is pretty much collector item by now, a piece of digital art history.

I'm gonna go ahead and disagree. I've got the left thumbstick bound to undo/redo on the left/right axis and brush size set to up/down. Then I just bound the right bumper as a chord button and set RB+up/down/left/right to change my painting parameters. Holding the thumbstick to the left for 2 seconds sure beats spamming an undo key 20 times, and I haven't even needed to bind anything to the right side of the controller yet so all of my shortcuts are within reach of my left hand.

I've used an Xp Pen tablet for 6 years (deco 01 v1) and yes , it falls flat in some aspects (lines specially) but it provided a very good drawing experience - it gave me line opacity and line weight , the precision problem was easily mitigated by getting used to the hardware , just like how a watercolor artist getting used to the feeling of using oils
these line in the photograph attached are made using the Wacom intuos pro model pth-851 - ive been using it for a year now and i can safely say that the build quality of wacom is superior that of xp pen's , but xp pen is also good as it provided me means to practice my art .
youre the thinking human , you have to adapt to the capability of your tools , nitpicking will only get you nowhere and just give you desires / wants for better upgrades thinking it would make you good , despite all the tools you need are already in your art program .

im using a large model too , pth 851
and honestly it felt different cause of the large drawing area - but i got used to it in less than a week
the 1k pen pressure is no biggie , here is the settings i use so it feels natural , you also gotta do the force proportion thing since the tablet might not be properly mapped to your screen

I want to upgrade from my older wacom bamboo to intuos, mostly because of the buttons. The thing is the intuos buttons are at the top, and I want to ask, is that even comfortable, or its just a waste of money? The pro would be a lot better choice, but I can't afford that.

i thought buttons were just a meme?
i have an intuos pro but have only recently "trained" myself to use the buttons - and even then catch myself using the keyboard shortcuts way too often in the end, just because its easier & faster...
the zoom is neat tho, i gotta admit.
maybe a used intuos pro?

yeah that wheel would be great too. I would need it mostly to speed up the process since I'm extremely slow when it comes to this stuff and at least that would speed me up a little bit. What should I look out for when buying used? There are two used intuos 4's and one 5 here in my country ,but they are all far away, so I cannot physically examine them.
I played with the idea of buying an XP Pen deco 03 too, since that would be around my budget, but idk if its worth.

i had a tab s7+ and it was good. Not ipad good but not really that far off especially for the price when you compare them. Procreate is brilliant though especially since it's a one time buy. That's the main reason why I ultimately got rid of the tab and picked up a used 4th gen ipad pro. I hate apple with a passion but they make a damn good drawing tablet.

yeah do this, they cost roughly the same and the color gamut is better. I really like my 22 plus, the only thing it's fucked up with so far is the drivers magically stopped recognizing it one day and I had to reinstall them, other than that it's been going strong for like 18 months now with no issues.

For buttons, just grab an old xbox/playstation controller that you undoubtedly have lying around and bind all of your shortcuts to it through steam or some other program. You can put analogue inputs on the thumbsticks, so what I did was set undo/redo to left and right and then the brush size to up and down on the left stick. You can do all sorts of fancy stuff with chords too, so you can get dozens of binds on only the left/right side of the controller that you can comfortably use one handed.

I think you can do better than that price. Looks like a 'Pro' model from the Intuos 5 era. You're right about a decade old, should be close to that. The Intuos 5 had that annoying rubber over its buttons, made them feel relatively shitty. Much more crappy than all of its predecessors in any case. Looks like the Pro got rid of that issue. Could be a 2013 release.
You can go for it if it is in good condition. A large tablet will feel nice and they tend to be very expensive. I remember paying $350 for my new Intuos 5 M back in the day. A great tablet no doubt but nowadays I've grown fond of competitor brands. I value bang for buck and once you start drawing on a display you can't go back. Or at least I couldn't. So much more fun.

Not sure where else to go to ask about this, so I'll try here.
I got a Lenovo Legion Y700 tablet recently and I noticed that minúte movements don't register very well, so I was wondering if there's a way to either fix this or at least circumvent it with some sort of stylus.
Would a Bluetooth stylus even be able to fix this issue, is that too stupid of a question?

If a bt stylus would be a good solution, what would you recommend? Idk if there's compatibility issues, but I've been looking into Lenovo's styluses, but I can't even tell the difference between the Precision pen and the Active pen series.
Any tips or input greatly appreciated.

Didn't really know that before, and I do like everything else about the device. I'm just wondering if there's a way to alleviate some of the issues in this one area, and I'm kinda retarded.
