6241058 No.6241058 [Reply] [Original]

The general thread for Manga / manga-styled comic-making, manga-style illustration and related comic work.

Support each other and talk about your work or the work of others that excites you. Inking, character design, paneling / layout, writing, planning, and other discussions are all welcome.
Post resources, questions, in-progress pages, breakdowns of other works, etc. If a work is not yours, credit the maker (unless it's fucking obvious like a full page of One Piece or something).
Thanks to everyone for making /mmg/ a level-headed and helpful place. Remember, drawing and making comics and manga are difficult endeavors, and we're all in this struggle together.

Some western / indie publishers of Manga:

Saturday AM ( https://www.saturday-am.com/ )
> Digital indie magazine, seems to be on the up-and-up
> Open submissions for long-form series; also distributes series currently being published elsewhere.
> Regularly publishes one-shots, making it a good potential outlet for already-finished work.

Noir Caesar ( https://www.noircaesar.com/ )
> Focuses on black (specifically African-American) content, but seems willing to publish anyone good enough.
> Seemingly series-based only.
> No "magazine" style updates; series are updated on their own schedule.
> Seems less regular than Saturday AM, but also seems larger in terms of readership.

Oni Press ( https://onipress.com/ )
> Technically indie, but at this point large enough by comic standards to be mentioned in the same breath as other publishers.

Antarctic Press ( https://antarctic-press.myshopify.com/ )
> Longtime large-indie publisher of OEL / manga-esque books.
> Seemingly taking submissions at present if http://www.antarctic-press.com/html/submissions.php is anything to go on.

Yen Press ( https://yenpress.com/ )
> Started out as a small indie publisher of original / Korean material, and has grown reasonably popular since.
> As of 2016, it is also one of the western arms of the Kadokawa Corporation, with Kadokawa owning a 51% stake.
> Editorial inquiries can apparently be sent to yenpress@yenpress.com, however, they apparently are not open to new submissions at this time.

Viz Media / Viz Originals ( https://www.viz.com/originals )
> *The* western manga publisher.
> Currently in the exploratory stages of setting up an English label.
> Submissions are open and several books have been announced. However, progress on the label seems to be moving very slowly.
> Still might be worth a shot anyway.

Shrine Comics ( https://shrinecomics.com/ )
> Small indie manga publisher
> Seemingly attempting to make the transition to physical volumes
> Allows crossposting to other sites

>> No.6241063

Other open comic publishers:

Dark Horse ( https://www.darkhorse.com )
>Dark Horse still welcomes your submissions, and all submissions will still be reviewed, just as they always have been.
>All unsolicited story/series proposals must have a full creative team on board. Writer-only proposals will not be reviewed.

Image comics ( https://imagecomics.com/ )
>Image Comics only publishes creator-owned material. They do not contract creators; they’re only interested in publishing original content for which you would retain all rights.
>Image Comics publishes creator-owned/creator-generated properties and THEY DON’T PAY PAGE RATES. Image takes a small flat fee off the books published, and it will be the responsibility of the creators to determine the division of the remaining pay between their creative team members.

Drawn and quarterly ( https://drawnandquarterly.com/ )
>Please email a low resolution PDF with at least 20 pages of comics and cover letter to submissions. Do not send dropbox links, scripts, or proposals. Please read our submissions FAQ.

Fantagraphics ( https://www.fantagraphics.com/ )
>submission page: https://www.fantagraphics.com/pages/faq

Top Shelf Productions ( https://www.topshelfcomix.com/ )
>Regarding submissions, we're easy. Just email us a download link of what you'd like us to review. NOTE: We cannot accept cover letters, plot synopses, or scripts unless they are accompanied by a minimum of 10-20 completed pages (i.e., fully inked and lettered comic book pages).

The term is subplots. A good example of subplots imo is Avengers Infinity War.
A tip for subplots is to write them as their own storyline with hints of it connecting to the bigger plot then they either connect at one point or both pay off.

Think of cool name, that has a nice ring to it, then try putting parts of that name into the story.
I usually name the story first then write it. Since a title to me makes or breaks the feel of the story.

Been a rough day so far, got this done. Been trying to write the next chapter which actually has dialogue and that's been going alright but it gets awkward trying to keep pacing events between chapter lengths. I considered saying fuck the manga format and just letting the story flow on it's own, but the restrictions sort of help me keep an active awareness of the story as it develops.

find an artist you like and copy 'around' them
(you like how they depicted a hand, copy that hand. add it to your own artwork. next time you want to draw a hand in that gesture you have already done the legwork and you can draw the rest of the owl. or hand in this case.)

build an internal database of references that you can draw upon at any time. most importantly:

Ask literally anyone else because I am not an expert or qualified to being dishing out advice, maybe ask me again when I finish this project.

>>6242775
The bags look AI-generated and their rendering style is not consistent with the rest of the piece. Seriously, your art will have infinitely more appeal if you just draw it yourself, even if you aren't quite able to render on that level of detail yet. It would honestly be better if you referenced a photo and copied it verbatim, at least then you would learn something.

The perspective of the scene is messed up, making it hard to judge the relative sizes and distances of the objects in the scene. It took me a while to figure out what was even behind the bags. Pic related is a reference photo that should help you out. Note the direction of the wooden planks and the direction of the depth lines of the couch, how they all converge towards a single vanishing point. A beginner's book on perspective will explain more.

The couch should have some kind of shadow (ambient occlusion) where it meets the ground, and it should either have legs, or it should be clear that the bottom edge is part of a fabric cover. Right now the seat of the couch looks like it is very low to the ground.

Since you colored the panties pink, I assume you wanted that to be the focal point. As it is now, it does not stand out very much. The light pink is about the same value as the surrounding gray. Try adding more contrast to the values like there is in the bags.

Also, Krita does have curves, located under Filters -> Adjust

Perfect thanks for the feedback.
Fug, I should've put shadows under the couch for sure, glaring mistake with that. The only leg that was visible was covered by the bag, so that doesn't help.
I drew the couch first then just imported it to GIMP to mash everything else in there from separate files. I'll avoid that next time and try rough sketching out the whole scene before to try to get better perspective.
>same value as the surrounding gray. Try adding more contrast to the values like there is in the bags.
I'll try that thanks.
I think I've found a way to emulate the shading on the bags too. Using that shading brush and blurring in steps. Gonna give that a test right now.

I'll take a break and maybe post again tomorrow. Appreciate it.

It's something that is been in my mind since I was in middle-school actually. I loved some Japanese franchises since I was little, like a lot of us here, but there was some negativity back then to western made manga style franchises (now the problem is that the market is shrinking, and will continue to do so).
I never really had an interest in "making manga in Japan" because even back then in middle school I had been hearing that the market over there is ridiculously saturated plus artists get pay too little and that the job is too stressful (and more recently I've read about artists from Japan telling younger artists to look for work elsewhere). However, Rangarok Online was extremely popular back then in middle school, and it was a Korean Anime style videogame franchise, based from a Korean Manga, and you could usually find Korean titles sold alongside Japanese titles in the manga section of bookstores, it seem like this is true also in Japan, I think Japanese people don't really care if it's "authentic Japanese manga" if they like it, they like it. That's when I thought that maybe Korean publisher will know better how to sell this things.
>>6244330
Not Korean, but in recent times there's been a huge influx of Korean people to my hometown, because of Hyundai and Kia factories. I've been taking classes, but I think I'll still need a translator, finding one in my city won't be a problem.

The worst thing that'll happen is you'll be disappointed in it later when you've improved.

If you pay close attention... Manga panels have thinner space between horizontal panels and thicker space between (the white is gonna be thin between a panel next to it, and thick in the panel bellow). 8 panels is a little too much but some artists manage to do that, 4 or 5 is more normal, and keep it to 2 or 3 rows of panels. Figured this would be a good place to ask as a lot of people here probably have the software. I have a friend offering to front me the money for Clip Studio Ex before they go to their monthly service model. Would it be worth it or is Krita catching up? I’ve only just started using Krita so I don’t really know how it compares to clip.

An stablished mangaka earns about 25 USD per page. If you are making a monthly title and it's a 35 pages long chapter you'd be making 850 USD, and if you hire assistants in order to meet dealines the money to pay assistants will come out of your own pocket, some assistants make about 10 USD a month and are left with a huge chunk of the work, I've read that many quit after just a couple months.

In Korea on the other hand, Lezhin pays like 1800 USD to their artists. Plus royalties depending on how well their webtoons fare. And I assume is the same for other webtoon sites. Don't know about Taiwan or China but I assume it works about the same.

You can be a successful mangaka, just not in Japan.

Yes this could be for sure.
This could be for aspiring mangaka what indie publishing did for aspiring authors. Or at least a path for it. I work in publishing and know a lot of successful authors who are completely indie.
Hopefully that same discovery/exposure can happen through these platforms.
But that said, the biggest hurdle is the time investment for making manga versus a written book.
It's much harder and demands a lot more to just put out a single chapter of manga versus a written book. So keep working on your processes and workflows anons.
Optimize.
Also think about how you'll get a following of readers too as you're making your manga.

For this specifically, all I did was guesstimate the perspective. It's easier to do with lots of cartoony hills so long as you keep the vanishing point in mind. If I did a big city type thing, I'd probably look for references of the sort of angle I was wanting and then plot it out myself with cubes. If the basic cube perspective is right you'll be able to bs a lot of the building details just by sticking with the basic forms.

This. And it doesn't take months and months of grinding to be able to make scenes in perspective. The more effort you put into making your work look good, the more you'll naturally incorporate your understanding of perspective, anatomy, and form. From my experience, having the eye to see something is off about your drawing means you already have that fundamental downloaded (especially if you can tell exactly what is flawed) but you haven't applied the understanding enough to execute it. Do maybe a page or two of perspective focused doodles, using your imagination to come up with harder exercises based on what you know and what you're unsure of like abstract shapes in perspective or taking detailed chunks out of simple forms. Practicing extreme things like fish eye perspective will teach you a lot.

A good way to understand panels is that they're meant to showcase different moments in time during a story. For example, if a character is meant to be changing emotions, you must use composition and panels space to showcase that. The bottom panel is a great example, it's a close up shot that tells you a strong emotion.
However, each panel should make sense with the previous panel. Here, it's hard to tell what is happening without context.

Sorry to hear about your lack of motivation, man. I hope you keep truckin' on, though. The chapter cover looks nice. I get a melancholic longing from the character, like he shared an intimate experience with a loved one involving dragonflies, and now they serve as hurtful reminders. (Or maybe I'm being too much of a pessimist lmao. Either way, great hatching!)

Thanks for the tips I appreciate the feedback and I will continue with those settings. Don't expect much as the story can be a snooze fest because the focus is more so on character interactions and not so much on action scenes or cool stuff and I'm not a writer either.

I like the dragonflies and the cover is interesting at least to me, I would definitely want to read it. Maybe you can add a few details at the top corner, like little marks so it's not too empty but minimalist enough to balance everything going on in the bottom. Just keep drawing bro you'll get better and it looks pretty intriguing so far...

The lines are too thick, the colors are garish, the anatomy is incredibly spotty - the shoulders are alright and show a level of unerstanding that the rest of the figure doesn't, but the hands look like they were ripped straight from a story board and the pose is completely broken, the face looks like sometying that'd be scribbled on a classroom whiteboard, and the insects are designed like childrens drawings, with hatching that follows suite.

I know it sounds like I'm being incredibly harsh, but as a passing observer looking for shit to read, these are some of the thoughts that would go through my head at a glance. And its a shame, because the image is theoretically very evocative, with some interesting repeating motifs. But you need to make your art more appealing and more expert - obviously, easier said than done, and the only way to look truly experienced is to actually experience things, but you can try.

I vastly prefer manga. Most anime these days are so soullessly made, even if the source material is pretty good. I also tend to like black and white artwork far more, because I think it takes more skill to really make it look good than coloring. People just tend to unquestionably accept color, even if it looks like shit. This is the problem with a lot of western comics, but way too many people just want color of basically any quality, even if it sucks.

As someone who doesn't care too much about art style as long as the story is good enough to make up for it, maybe. I would probably read the synopsis or first few pages just to see the mood because I think some of the creatures in the cover seem interesting. The concept from first impression seems rather unique and bizarre which I like, but I agree with the other anons that the art could use some improvement and the style itself isn't my cup of tea. I would say work on the anatomy first, especially the face because faces are really important in comics for obvious reasons and often in thumbnails too. I think some of the thick lines are fine because some people can make it work, but I do think you could change line weight here and there. For example changing background lines to separate the foreground from it. Also be careful of your tangents, they can really draw attention to unintended spots away from the intended focus.

It's just two people talking but I wanted to make a self indulgent little comic so I drew it out today. I worked in a small novelty notebook with the panels already drawn in which saved me time, but forced me to work with the layout given. I looked forward to inking it traditionally, but I realized the pages are too thin and it would bleed through. I might ink it and add backgrounds digitally, but I got it out of my system for now. It was interesting working in this way, and since it was so small I had to change how I thought about drawing. It was fun!

Heyo 4koma anon here,
The format doesn't matter that much at this point since the panels will all be chopped up and put as single images for Instagram and vertical scrolling.
But the format I'm using is pretty standard for 4koma even among officially translated works, I'm just using this to keep everything organized, although if it ever were to be printed, I'll bother with it then.

It might be a bit confusing because it's a chapter title page, but they're the most common type of presentation for a 1st chapter page in 4komas.

I'm also using "MANGA TIME KIRARA" submission guidelines magazine as a reference for board size etc. etc. (a magazine that exclusively only publishes 4komas).
I put some refs as example.

I love comedy (my favorite comics are Lupin III, One Piece, Calvin and Hobbes, the Peanuts, etc) so I never think someone's "wasting" their skills on comedy, but I do think dedicating your art career to making parodies or fanart of other people's works shows a lack of creativity; I don't think that's necessarily the case for the guy who made that Elden Ring comic since he probably draws other stuff, but there are so many Twitter illustrators who are content making Nintendo or flavour of the month anime fanart for eternity

I'm sorry anon. Photoshop is literally dookie from a butt. Though it never hurts to learn different programs because you'll take something from the experience either way. I started with an ancient thing called photostudio, then gimp, then photoshop cs5-cs6, then sai, then bounced between them uncomfortably until eventually settling with Krita a few years ago which ended up feeling just right for me. As PlagueOfGripes once said, photoshop has an annoying tendency to try and "help" you with some of its features and really only ends up being annoying. As for using both, I'd say no unless photoshop has some really unique effect filters or something that you absolutely must have for whatever you're doing. I do all my drawing in Krita. The last time I opened photoshop was either to look at the frames of a gif or to make some retarded meme.

I feed myself with comic work. It's true that comics take too long to do as an after-work thing. Unless we're just talking about fairly low-effort doodle comics then yeah, comics really do take too much time to make after a full-time job. Maybe a part time would work, but even still you're severely underestimating the time commitment a decent release schedule is for your comic. Obviously if you're fine with just a page every other day then you won't understand but for those of us who aspire to put out work at a rate comparable (not necessary matching) that of pros then no, doing it on the side isn't an option.

you mean those people who are literal slaves to the deadline for pennies? if you want to be a slave then be one.

>> No.6261859

>>6261844
"Comparable to pros" meaning "frequent enough that readers won't simply forget you exist between updates".
Anyway, you're deflecting. It takes crazy hours to put work out at a good pace, how much you get paid for those hours isn't relevant to the point.

I just finished writting the script for the one-shot I'm planning to draw, it's 53 pages long but I think I can narrow it down to 45 pages so I'll be working on editing it now, truly I admire the people that can draw a storyboard without writting a script

>> No.6262875

Got my 2nd chapter boarded this morning. I learned how to pace the script out better by plotting out key events on multiple pages at a time. Only had to cut a few lines out, but mainly because it was less immently important stuff that could be said or done in a later chapter. What's everybody been up to lately?

Post what you have, because the solution depends on how shitty it actually is. The line between bad and inexperienced is a blurry one. The solution may be to stop and study fundamentals of art and/or storytelling. But you also might be good enough to push through and get better as you go.

I think the composition within the panels look a lot better now with the finalized speech bubbles, but I do feel as if the art style lost a bit of the dreamy and elegant character from the traditional sketch but it still looks nice.

What kind of stuff do you release? With a publisher? Crowdfunding / patreon?

>> No.6263925

>>6263902
I got hired to draw a comic that's being written by others. These are still early days and the exact method of release is still up in the air, but as long as the money stays good I'm not really concerning myself with that stuff. For now I'm just focused on drawing it. I believe the general plan is to stay indie, since funding doesn't seem to be an issue.
