Why You Should Copy Anime:
https://i.imgur.com/zNDsyF0.jpg
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kbKqIJcIUCw

**Strive for quantity AND quality.**

Anime Studying:
>Copy anime references exactly and draw them from memory. Use illustrations, screenshots, anime figures, 3D models, etc.
>Don’t copy recklessly. Use construction, color theory, and other fundamental concepts to rehearse a drawing process that you can later easily manipulate for original artwork.
>Post all of your anime studies. Post even when you’re told not to. Create an art community that actually draws and improves together instead of just talking about it.
>Number your attempts and link to your previous posts.
>Critiquers should lead by example by posting their studies.

General Anime Style Discussion:
>Questions about achieving certain styles/techniques/compositions etc.
>Drawing methods, study habits, resources, tutorials, tools, software, etc
>Be specific and try to post a sample of your study attempts before asking for help.

**Draw copies from good anime styled references to mindfully up our mileage, internalize appealing aesthetics, and learn from each other’s processes and knowledge.**

the best advice i have is to focus specifically on practicing one thing at a time and just draw. it is a grind that has to be done. the best thing when you dont know where to go or what to do and you are utterly confused is to just draw. that really is the ultimate answer. put in the time and effort and leave the rest to the muse.

pro tip:
dont use black when you are doing the sketch, try using other color like dark blue/red, why?
because your brain thinks that black is like the final line art even if it's a sketch, try blue or red, you should able to draw with more confidence.

I feel as if i'm blind. It feels really difficult to look at a line and then try to copy it. There are so many lines that curve slightly. I know i'm doing the line wrong because my image doesn't look like what i'm copying. Do I try to measure out the lines with a ruler and a grid to see the exact bend or do I try to feel it out.

you're failing because this is the first time you're doing it. Do you think everyone just rides their bike for the first time and never falls? no, first time you fail, then you try again knowing what you now know. That's the basic idea behind learning anon.

I don't really care if this took hours, the idea of practice is that you do it, fail, and try again until you can do it. Human beings learn, that's completely normal.

This learn the forms. The force books do a good job of simplifying the anatomy into shapes that you cut into to get form. Also try making a grid in perspective with a perspective line then drawing the shapes of the figure and then cutting into the form making sure your slices are in correct perspective. Then on a layer above do your inking. Sorry if this was confusing but try watching the moderndayjames video on organic forms that will help explain what I mean when I say cut into the shapes to make form.

Idk what Krenz says about it, I just know that it works very quickly.

If it's for a style issue, just monkey training on many different authors and gradually it will come natural to mix them together

I agree, however, that you first need a trained eye to UNDERSTAND what you are drawing and how to improve it, but for that you only need to browse through a booklet on Depth & Gestalt rules for five minutes and monkeying roughly an anatomical board

>> No.6240367

Krenz says 3-4 months of copying to train your eye, you say 5 minutes of reading and 100 copies of an anatomical board?

>> No.6240390

>>6240367
Five minutes is hyperbole but it is like learning a new alphabet before studying the grammar of another language, it takes you two days at most

Once you get the basic theoretical knowledge you go to practice to assimilate it in your head and in your hand, and that you develop by studying and refining what you draw as you do it and seeing how others do it

>> No.6240424

>>6238847
I mean, the thing with this method is that, unless you understand what you're doing, you have to do this for every single thing you draw forever.
Sure it works for drawing one thing, but when you get to the next thing, you have to start over from scratch.

some things are probably learnt a lot better this way tho, such as line control etc, that's not something you can learn by studying, you just have to do it a million times and you'll just get better by muscle memory.

Most artists do the lines in all black first then change the color later by locking the transparency of the line art layer. prebeg question about pencil grip and copying anime:
I make shitty copies of manga panels
I'm also learning to hold a pencil properly (light lines, overhand grip, draw from the shoulder)
But is this kind of grip mostly incongruous with copying out anime characters?
I seem to need tight, small lines for accuracy and I can only do those drawing from the fingers/wrist with a normal tripod grip.

>Pencil gripping like that is pretty much pointless outside of standing at an easel.
This, I used to use the candle grip when working on easels with big canvases because you have to make large gestures for making guidelines, construction, shading and crosshatching work, etc. but sitting down at a table with an A4 paper there's no usage for it.

Here's a trick if you want to prevent drawing from the fingers/wrist less using the tripod grip, hold your tripod grip further up the pen and away from the tip.

way too much construction thats doesnt add anything, adding lines that dont describe the form, like on the arms, and neck/traps what's the point? It's vague where it should be detailed and detailed where it should be vauge (you really dont need to define each individual ab muscle, or really any single muscle IMO the goal is to see many small shapes as few big shapes that have some form which this doesnt have like in the elbows for example. its just hanging on there, the knees, deltoid, cheeks, neck muscles, pussy (the vagina is always point down when standing) are all just stuck on incorrectly, and if its stylistic, still I would ask whats the point? why put them there?

Im struggling to understand what your goal is with this I hope you did this from imagination and not from a construction refrence that claims to to be learning material, because if its anatomy, its simplifying muscles that arent there, and the ones that are there are barely in the right place, if its to learn basic shapes that dont focus on learning the anatomy, but as a basic way to see shapes, it looks incredibly flat and seems to choose shapes at random its not even really a shape that fits a construction in some areas like the legs and knee caps, what is that diamond thing next to the deltoids?

Look up sycra on youtube he has a basic anatomy construction with clearly readable forms that are good for learning the most important muscles groups IMO

I'm the guy in the previous thread complaining about anime foreheads. I decided to do a short study by drawing only anime girl heads.
The traced pic is on the left and my copy is on the right (except for the first 3). I only allowed myself 5 minutes so some drawings end abruptly. At some point I stopped trying to draw the hair and focused only on the head shape because I kept going over my assigned 5 minutes.

I could definitely feel the /weg/shit style leaving my body after the first 10 drawings and getting used to drawing alien foreheads, however I still struggle with proper cheek shape, and anime hair often ends up obscuring the skull shape for me. Another major problem I noticed is drawing the head at an angle and aligning the face elements accordingly, but that's more of a lack of general drawing skills than specific anime one.

>> No.6249001
File: 265 KB, 1400x1205, heads3.png [View same] [iqdb] [saucenao] [google]
6249001

>>6248996
At the end I decided to see if I learned anything after the study and tried to draw a head at several angles entirely from my imagination with no references. Turns out I didn't actually learn anything other than just how to copy anime heads, visualizing and rotating them in 3D is something else entirely. I should have probably went for a box approach instead of sphere approach like this guy does>>6237236, I think I'll try that next time.
Another bad habit I noticed is that when drawing the head at angles I'm not familiar with, I end up drawing everything smaller than it actually is (eyes, ears, etc.) I don't push the lines and the size as much as I should. I guess this comes from lack of confidence and fear of fucking the drawing up, so I instinctively draw smaller and just from my wrist to have more control.

It was a good exercise, but I feel like drawing only 1 hour per day is killing my art gains. It's like my brain only enters "drawing mode" and starts seeing the shapes and copying them properly after 1 hour of drawing, and that's exactly when I have to stop. I guess this is what "warming up" is like for artists. Maybe this period will shorten to 10 minutes instead of 1 hour with enough practice, but if not then I might have to give up some 1-2 hours of sleep so I can draw some more.
Sorry for the walls of text and blogposting, just did this for self-documenting purposes. Next up I'll try to do some hands and feet.

Guys, I'm really scared of my art looking like the faux-anime you see nowadays (stuff like Castlevania and even Avatar, the stuff that Whyt Manga draws even though he's very talented). Nothing against those styles, but I'd rather look closer to the authentic stuff. At the moment I'm just working on construcution and fundamentals so since I'm still early on in my journey does anyone know what sets the traditional manga/anime drawings and art from the clearly westernized ones? What are the pitfalls and habits I should avoid?
