It can be used to help you get references for things that would otherwise likely have no reference. You can also spitball your ideas with the AI, see what it churns up, and use that as a starting point (whether again as a reference, or a springboard for your drawing, or as a base to paint over or photobash).

It also has some strong suits it's quite fantastic at. Machinery, setting scenes (environmental art), Horror/Body Horror.

As someone who collects art books I find AI to be fun but it definitely spits out terrible things that look just wrong. I find enjoyment in some of the surprises but it couldn't hold my interest for more than a few days until I got tired of it because despite the infinite possibilities it just starts looking very same-y and it clearly has no real skills in contrast to the artists it tries to mimic.

I don't think you realise what an attack this is on our social fabric. If AI is able to keep absorbing all creative voices into it's database, then iterate and mix them endlessly and faster than any human could, then Intellectual property becomes worthless. People say, well you just need to create art that an AI hasn't thought of yet, but I think that once those exceptions are created, it will be easy enough to absorb them as a parameter as well. If I as a human, take someone's work and reuse it in my work, and it causes them damage to their livelihood, it would not be considered fair use. But because AI steals from trillions of different sources in an elaborate database where the originals have been obscured, it is impossible to identify which and what works have been sourced from.
If this technology is not regulated, we will see the death of the author, as creators will no longer own their work in the sense that we think of it now - after all, we can just feed it to the machine, create a new iteration, and do with it what we like. To who now owns all these infinite narratives and possibilities? Who is benefitting from the shift from artists and authors to a machine?

I'm actually of the opinion that's there probably going to be a very large legal case involving stock imagery companies, artists and other visual creatives unions and guilds, people from other creative fields (if they're not idiots and see the writing on the wall, music is already coming up next), and individual artists and their families, taking this to court.

Try gimp then, though I heard it's a bit sluggish with painting though, but slightly blurring, or using sharpening filters/tools should fix some issues (also play with the colours, these AIs love going really dark). Tried it and meh, you get some random nice-looking images, but getting specific results is very hard without inpainting implemented. Even when it gets implemented, getting the results you want will save you maybe an hour, and you'll have to compromise. We are not getting replaced just yet. wait untill there is more functionality/design permanence.

We can't definitively say whether an artwork has had an influence on a person, regardless of obvious similarities; WE CAN say that for AI because the artwork will be part of its dataset. That artist helped shape the AI, and it's not only damaging the artist's career, he didn't get compensated for doing so.

As I've mentioned elsewhere, they are actually the same thing. Text2img just starts with a picture of noise and then begins generating pictures. Img2img you can think of starting in the middle of that process by inserting an image for it to work off of.
