If you are a /beg/inner or /int/ermediate in art, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice.
Use this thread instead of making new threads or post in the drawthread with fundamental exercises.

Thread prompt: Draw a superhero
Hardmode: It can't be Adolf Hitler

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS using one of the following methods:
1. screenshot the image and post that instead
2. change camera capture settings to something smaller
3. send to computer and resize in MSPaint

READ THE STICKY:
New collaborative sticky (anyone can edit): https://hackmd.io/UMnZVhNITW-T2wZpHw6d0Q
Old: http://www.squidoo.com/how-to-draw-learn

RECOMMENDED BOOKS FOR BEGINNERS:
- The Art and Science of Drawing (shit)
- Perspective Drawing Handbook
- Vilppu Drawing Manual (and literally any other book made by Glenn Vilppu)
- Figure - Design and invention
- Pen and Ink
- The Natural Way To Draw

RECOMMENDED BOOKS FOR INTERMEDIATES:
- How to Draw by Scott Robertson
- How to Render by Scott Robertson
- Color and Light: A Guide for the Realist Painter by James Gurney
- Morpho: Anatomy for Artists (and Literally any other book made by Michel Lauricella)
- Anatomy for Sculptors

TRY TO BE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK.
When giving feedback, avoid vague "advice" - point what's wrong and try to give the anon you're quoting a clear direction to improve their art (study heads < watch THIS VIDEO about head structure, read THIS SECTION of THIS ARTIST'S BOOK, etc).
You, feedback seeking anon, should also try to be clear and concise when asking for critique/help. When posting your artwork, say what you want help with, and what's your goal with the study/artwork.

my pleb opinion is that in digital painting there are dozens of ways how to draw anything. some artists use billion layers, some artists use 3 layers.

some people first draw grayscale and then add colors, some draw using colors only. i even saw people who use muddy colors, then they use value filter to boost up saturation to make the colors less muddy and then keep adding mudding colors again until they are finished.

but yeah if your software allows it, you should paint in linear color space and use floating-point for "infinite" color depth, it reduces artifacts and provides more space for mixing colors or values.

this particular tutorial talk that the big advantage is that you can alter the colors or lighting later but i dont know if there are any artists who start painting before they know what they want. definitely not me. i already know what lighting will look like so i wouldnt benefit much from this workflow where you separate colors and values so much.

You can see the strokes end in many places. It's just the way that many (actual, not meme) schizophrenics draw, whether he's actually a schizophrenic or copying the artstyle. They just scribble haphazardly in the general area to form outlines and value shapes, kind of fascinating.

Also character art and stylistic backgrounds as the main focus for now. My plan is to reach a skill/appeal level comparable to those pictures and then start making comics, considering no one in the /mmg/ can draw as good objectively.

Can someone explain the logistics of what's going on here? Why not draw a cube? Why I gotta work with the horizon line? Is it to get better sense of perspective, as I know the cube's facing is like?
Also, while checking out the sticky I saw that you should do studies: what concerned me is that it mentioned that there wasn't much discussion on how to make a study, nor do I see much on YouTube on it (just videos saying you should). Yeah nathan fowkes landscape course on schoolism. It's not really meant to be an intensive fundies grinding course. It's a good warm up before studying and you basically learn different approaches to different subjects. For that one I used an opacity brush for 90% of the hour I spent on it. I've never really done it before and having someone hold your hand through it really helps your confidence. Felt a lot more free going in with an opacity brush vs hard block ins.

Hi /ic/ new to your board. I want to paint a design on my climbing crash pad. It's purpose it to provide a softer landing spot for when people fall off a boulder. It's a pretty common one and people have sometimes picked it up thinking it was theirs, so I want to make mine unique. Pic related. Looking for ideas or advice on which paint to buy? People are going to be landing on it so It needs to stick nice to the fabric. I did a bit of research and I found that it's made of 600d nylon, which makes it very durable. Thanks anons

>why not draw a cube
How can you draw a cube if you haven't established horizon and vanishing points yet? You are reading book made by NERD so you have to follow the process. Only after you have the vanishing points ONLY then you know to which direction the parallel lines of the cube will go.
>studies
Studies can be anything from mindlessly copying stuff (like i am doing) to very careful observation of some piece and understanding how exactly it was made. Or just reading book / course. Basically anything but drawing for fun

Follow a course, draw daily.
You don't have to be productive every day just draw every day, can be anything really just put the pen to the paper.
You need to make it a routine, no matter what I draw today.

They are not very readable and don't thumbnail well. Thumbnails are all about composition so I recommend going and researching or studying (ie doing thumbnails as studies of master works) composition a bit independently of the perspective shit you've been working on to get an idea of the principles and sensibilities involved. Also work in a darker colour or black, because the lack of contrast makes it hard to see the composition either way. I need to work on thumbnails more myself, so thanks for reminding me.

Whatever the source or nature of the soul, whether it's some metaphysical object created by a deity or simply an exceptionally complex network of computations or anything in between, it's excessively obvious that it exists and that each human has a conscious and exclusive perspective. There is something that makes a human mind different from a machine calculation and possibly also from the nerve impulses of insects or basic biological exchange of information of plants. Unless of course that schizo a while back was actually right about like 2/3 of people having aphantasia, pretending they don't, and people with aphantasia actually having no inner world or conscious mind whatsoever and just being machines shaped like humans. I guess it would be understandable if such a person did not believe in the existence of souls (and to be honest I looked up some of his citations and he might be right! There's an immense push for women in computers and data science, both because of feminism and in a way to lower wages by doubling the workforce. in 20 years you can expect the field to be overwhelmingly female thanks to how easy it'll get to hire people from third world countries where it already is and a growing number of young girls getting into CS as it's pretty much the easiest hard science.

Meaning those AI models will be made by holes, for holes, half of which will be lesbians with pronouns or something, and will only shit out vile fujo garbage instead of the kind of based pictural faggotry you're into because they'll be the ones curating the training dataset.

Sure you could take the models and retrain them on a dataset full of things you like but some sort of "ethics committee" (5 women with holistic crystal therapy degrees and one who wrote some JavaScript one day) will shut you down because you put a bit of questionable hair pulling in it

No, its a flat on perspective.
When dealing with emotion/atmosphere like intimidation you want to use a lower perspective. How you angle the scene will have a massive impact on how people will perceive what's going on.

Straight on perspective like this just feels very matter of fact and sterile.

push the angle way lower so you're looking up at the mech thing.

Perspective thumbnail is just a small scale drawing with the fundamental perspective proportions you want in your composition. Its literally just a small drawing, and its small because that makes it easier to find and draw from vanishing points (which as you've noticed with your example, sometimes exist outside your picture frame).

You see how much I struggle with basic VP stuff though, right? I've been at this for like a year. Still can't wrap my head around off-page vanishing points, still can't make sense of how to create 90 degree angles that are consistent for the FoV.

Scott Robertson is a shit source if you struggle with the basics, because it assumes you already have some understanding of how human vision works. I'd personally suggest you do any of these 3 sources, which would help you understand the basics.

1. Erik Olson Weeks 1 to 10 from New Masters Academy
2. Marshall Vandruff's Science of Art DVD
3. Marcus-Mateu Mestre ''Framed Perspective Vol 1'' book.

(Some Anons also recommend Space Drawing by Kim Dongho, I chcked it and its a good book, but I feel you might do better with video format for now).
Personally. I'd go with either Marshall or Erik Olson. Since they are video format and you can see them draw the examples for you

>Still can't wrap my head around off-page vanishing points

The guesswork that's involved when rotating them, warping them. It's not practical to measure out every little shape like that, is it?

>do you know how to find the FOV or create either a 60 or 90 degree one based off the station point?

Not really, plus there's the difficulty of measuring out the 90 degree angle at the station point in any casual sketch context where I don't have these tools to make that measurement.
The way I interpreted CoV is that the right and left edges of the frame are each 30 degrees from the CVP, making out a full 60 CoV, but I'm not sure if that's correct.

>> No.6241859

>>6241839
>The guesswork that's involved when rotating them, warping them. It's not practical to measure out every little shape like that, is it?
There is no guess work if you measure, otherwise you'll only develop an intuition if you say, do an exercise where you draw 20 well, and accurately measured boxes in perspective, otherwise how are you gonna learn to have the intuition to guess with?
Can you do it without guessing? And why are you missing the tools? You can do everything in Photoshop>
>Not really, plus there's the difficulty of measuring out the 90 degree angle at the station point in any casual sketch context where I don't have these tools to make that measurement.

I feel going through understanding how to get VPs off the station poiint will help you feel a lot less lost, seems to me you didn' go through applying the rules or exercises, and you are trying to guess on empty which must be very confusing and frustrating
>The way I interpreted CoV is that the right and left edges of the frame are each 30 degrees from the CVP, making out a full 60 CoV, but I'm not sure if that's correct.

Yeah bro, you got it, well done, thats exactly it. Now, if you measure 45 degrees from the station point, you have 45 degree vanishing points for a 2 point perspective, if you do 30/60 then you get a yet another type of 2 pp
-
Honestly, seems you have learned something from going through Scott so, don't feel too bad. I am convinced that if you have a look at Marshall's DVD and try to construct the perspective from station point to COV a couple times, these confusing thoughts you have will dissipate. There's not a lot else that personally helped me..

I guess so. It just seems incredibly difficult to fit that accuracy into exercises like this with organic shapes.
And if you're thinking of using boxes when constructing a person or something in 3-point perspective, then that seems like a ton of measurement you'll be doing for each limb.

Yeah, I can understand why it feels daunting, I know it felt that way to me aswell when learning this. But honestly, if you go through a few of them (Non organic for the time being) just to make sure you understand how to move in perspective, then you can start practising the modelling techniques sculptors use (which translate into 2D perspective) Like shearing, substracting, adding. Look, the fastest way to learn to think in ''3D'' its for you to do the boring exercises where you are given a side, top and front view, and you gotta draw it accurately in perspective (XYZ volume drawing, from Scott Robertson). But there's no point jumping into that right away if you are struggling to put non-organical shapes into perspective like a box or square
-
I also drew this, hopefully it helps you understand how you can have VPs outside the picture frame, and why thumbnailing is important
