6239395 No.6239395 [Reply] [Original]

As you can see here with this OC of mine, i struggled a lot with the lineart not coming up as clean as id hope, alongside shading being way too "solid" and not natural at all.

Help me out, what am i doing wrong? Any tips you could give me for quick anime digital art?

Seconding line weight.

Also consider texture. E.g. Apply the shiny way you colored her metal hair thingy to all the shiny armor parts.

Intentional. I tried to imitate the style of kaga Fire Emblem heroines. The OC above is the main heroine of my romhack.

varying the thickness of your lines

The problem here is that lines are all the same perfect size, yet theres some mistakes here and there
Either you clean up the mistakes (which are normal to happen) or you go for more stylized and uneven lines which i think look way better and more organic
If you want to go for the even lines you should use some help like lazy nezumi

>> No.6241724

>>6241716
For example in the pic you posted, he definitely didnt use some shit like lazy nezumi, you can see the lines are slightly uneven giving it a more organic and pleasant look
Its up to you how far you want to go when it comes to the uneveness of lines, you can have a slight effect like that pic or go for a full blown sketchy look

Yeah, they kinda do.
I do not really know how to make pretty eyes, i have no algorythm for it.
I just kinda just put some white spots and some shading.

What program did you use to draw this OP? And what style of shading/coloring are you looking to achieve?

Clip Studio, but i barely know hwo to really use it.
I just use one brush (maru) and use gradient masks to do color.

and id personally wish to learn how to replicate either this style >>6239430 for my romhack project (the OC is the main girl of that project) or a quick and stylish shading method for quick drawing and commission making. (possibly something like Persona 5 or anything that "most people" seem to like.)

Give me a minute to draw something for you, OP. I will say now though, for you, this style: >>6239430 is too advanced/time consuming. I'd recommend going with an art style like Persona 5.

Sounds good. I really just want to find a "methodology" i can follow for consistently "quality" results, even if they are not that fancy.

So I redrew part of your character; broken down into the steps I took to do it. First was the line art, then the flat colors without any shading, and finally solid black for the shading.

First I'd suggest either having just ONE size for the thickness of the lines or vary it more. In your case, the mouth was thinner and so were parts of the eyes, which I think looks odd when they're the only thin lines. Another thing that helps make line art look more bold is quicker strokes. If you go past where you need to, you can always erase. Something about drawing on a tablet can make lines look wobbly if you draw slow.

The black shading is a bit tricky, but the idea is that you're making the shadows pure black. It's a style thing, so you have to decide where and how much black is too much. Fortunately the Persona 5 artist has plenty of pics for you to just kinda steal what they do. I do this, and every step, on different layers.

Quickest way is to choose an artist whose art you like and copy this artist’s works for some time. The more time you spend on this focused activity the better you get.

>>6244835
Thank you so much for the advice.
Sometimes, i go and make way too many layers of shading and spend 3 or so more hours on that and correcting my lineart.

So, yeah, thank you very much. I'll practice using this method lots more.

Another simple thing you could do to add some style to it would be to make the outline of the drawing thicker OR you could just draw the lines kind of sketchy. That gives it a different vibe though.

I've got one last trick to help you save time. I'll post it here in a second.

Okay so for my last tip to help you save time:

>draw your lines on their own layer
>after you draw them and make sure there aren't any gaps/broken lines
>use Auto Select and click anywhere outside of your lines
>then go to Select at the top of the screen and choose "Invert Selected Area"
>OR press ctrl+shift+I
>now that you have your drawing selected make a NEW layer underneath your line drawing layer
>use the bucket tool to fill in your selection
>above your layers there's a button called "Lock Transparent Pixels" CLICK THAT
>now you have your entire drawing filled in, ready to be colored properly, AND you can't color outside of the lines

And the bonus tip is just creating a layer ABOVE your color layer and BELOW your lines layer and set it to Multiply. Now pick any color you like and shade. It's a pretty quick way to shade a drawing.

ok, now take whatever he said and toss it into the thrash. you don't even need pen pressure to show form, if you do, you should work on that first,. if you aren't confident with your forms your lines will be shaky and aimless. Do your lines in one swoop, don't over shot them. don't cut them too early, if you fill that gap with another line it will show how much of a pussy you are. every lines has to have a purpose, every line has to be necessary. If you really need to make a line ticker ,do it, but be purposeful
you're too much of a /beg/ anon, I can't tell you my secrets cuz you won't even be able to understand them- Confidence comes from having good taste. drawing a lot, having a good diet, and good arm muscles
