Every artist should pick up a new side hobby, mainly shooting!
Handguns, shotguns, rifles, lever action rifles, revolvers, black powder, there's so much variety to choose from for a huge variety of activities it's hard to decide on just one!

Want to go hunting and take down something that's roughly the size of a deer, or even greater? A 12g shotgun loaded with 00 Buckshot and/or Slugs is your friend. Remember, birdshot is for the birds!
Like handguns and need one for protection/competitive shooting? The sky's the limit! 9mm Glocks and CZs dominate the competition sphere, and with good reason, but want something cheap for self defense? The Hi-Point 9mm handgun is your answer! Remember to train with ball ammunition but load it with hollowpoints to minimize overpenetration!
Want a rifle for all of the above? The AR-15 is your friend! With such a wide aftermarket you can fine tune and convert your rifle to fulfill whatever needs you wish. Need a bigger caliber? Swap a few parts and you're good to go! Want a better trigger? You can do that! Want to decorate it with encouraging messages for yourself and your friends? A grease pencil is all you need!

There are many more hobbies to choose from, especially for those history buffs out there. Want to larp as a cowboy? You can do that at your local cowboy shooting action club! Want to larp as a revolutionary war soldier? You can do that with any war re-enactment group! Want to collect WWII rifles? You can do that too!

Live in a jurisdiction that denies you the ability to get firearms? I'm very sorry to hear that but don't worry there are plenty of viable hobby items (that can be used for self defense if the need arises) available for purchase from your local sporting goods store and even hardware stores for those DIYers amongst you(pic related)!
Don't let anyone get you down, life is full of surprises and opportunities! It's always a joy to learn new things and put that newfound knowledge into practice.

Recreate this page using AI.

Notice how all the “AI comics” are mostly zoomed out environmental shots, mixed in with maybe occasional shots of a character with a lifeless stare on their face.
It’s impossible to get something that both looks good and matches the specificity of what you want, solely with AI.
If a comic writer doesn’t want to settle for a soupy montage of generic environmental shots then they still need an artist.

i wouldnt mind a great writer being able to make a graphic novel more easily
but in reality the internet and market would be filled by shit like OP pic, just pure generic trash fire garbage
novel market is already saturated by mostly shit, thats exactly what happened with self-publishing
with AI comics/manga/webtoon/manwha wtv is gonna be flooded by shitty bullshit the same way
basically, you will still need to be a good artist and a good writer

While I agree, it's a poor criticism for AI art; how do you define "soul" in artwork? How does one have it, or not have it, in an art work regardless of who drew it?

There are so many point to often criticize AI art work that is observable and quantifiable, but the criticism people always throw around is its lack of "soul". You might as well criticize it for its lack of "oomph" or it's lack of "je ne sais quoi".

Point out the actual faults with AI art, otherwise you're just attacking shadows.

>>6232779
Would be good as a storyboard to send to pitch your graphic novel, or as base to cheapen the cost if you were working with an illustrator. The issue is that having "flow" in your comic is a skill in of itself that takes time to cultivate (I'm sure we've all read a beautiful comic that reads like ass), I seriously doubt this AI comic flows well.

This machine learning stuff is like royalty free google search, I cant imagine how frustrating it would be to make a comic with this. It's already annoying enough trying to find the right reference when I'm stuck on a bit of anatomy, rolling the dice thousands of times for every panel to get an approximation of what you want would make me blow my brains out.

For it to become a useful tool it needs to be smart about visual input, turning unfinished sketches and scribbles into consistent finished output.

That face. This is truly a dramatic moment

This comic honestly has some cool environmental panels, but the character art was wildly inconsistent, while only managing to portray the character has having this dead dull stare (the old woman was consistent though). The flow is bad, but that is hard to judge as the writing is pretty dog shit. Nothing is established is the Girl just zipped from her home, to space, to some new planet with little introspection.

>> No.6233062

As a programmer who doesn't do art and just visited this board for the first time just now, I was having trouble understanding why some people are freaking out about this. It seems obvious to me that human artists will always be able to produce something exactly as they want it manifested in a way that an AI probably won't really be able to do through simple text prompting and parameter tweaking. Even with outlines or sketches or whatever.

I think maybe the thing I'm missing here is that making any sort of decent art at all is probably really hard and laborious and often not even possible for most humans and this kind of closes the gap effortlessly. Something that took someone three months to make could be created with very similar level of detail and structure in under a minute or two, even if it's not 100% what they envisioned.

Yes but this is basically like ground zero. The tech was first publicly released literally yesterday. We're like in the "Apple I" stage of personal computers. Even in a year, it's going to be way more sophisticated. But yeah, can't hurt to get a head start and play with it.

I don't know anything about comics and have never even read one but my guess is there are little nuances and details, like how/where things are positioned and what characters are looking at and "cinematography" type stuff, that'll be pretty hard to effectively and consistently do with the current AI, even if that's the kind of thing you have a mind for (which I doubt was even the case for the person who made this comic). It's good at taking a general idea and giving you something pretty close to it, but it's not really like being a "director" for a robot artist (yet). But of course, people are working on improving that as we speak. Including even over in /g/ right now, by tweaking various parts of the tech stack.

Making good art, in any medium, primarily comes down to taste.

>“Nobody tells this to people who are beginners, I wish someone told me. All of us who do creative work, we get into it because we have good taste. But there is this gap. For the first couple years you make stuff, it’s just not that good. It’s trying to be good, it has potential, but it’s not. But your taste, the thing that got you into the game, is still killer. And your taste is why your work disappoints you. A lot of people never get past this phase, they quit. Most people I know who do interesting, creative work went through years of this. We know our work doesn’t have this special thing that we want it to have. We all go through this. And if you are just starting out or you are still in this phase, you gotta know its normal and the most important thing you can do is do a lot of work. Put yourself on a deadline so that every week you will finish one story. It is only by going through a volume of work that you will close that gap, and your work will be as good as your ambitions. And I took longer to figure out how to do this than anyone I’ve ever met. It’s gonna take awhile. It’s normal to take awhile. You’ve just gotta fight your way through.”

Closest shit I could technically do would be to make an isekai light novel, translate it with gpt-3 and get it like published in japan with a scouter or agent.

Anything else is a waste of time.

-Short story
-Pilot for a show
-Fan Fiction
-An essay on something your passionate about
-A fucking blog post
-ANYTHING

My god anon, you read about theory on writing, obviously like reading and supposedly writing, but bitch and moan about doing it. Because I have mostly literary shitpost from like a year ago for /lit/

If you mean like aiming for skill, It's pointless because It looks like gibberish straight from joyce novel.
Because if you want to see just skill masturbation, is gibberish to an untrained person in figures of speech.
So you will assume is shit.

That's just on the writing virtuoso shit.

So any other form of writing, that normies like YOU will understand is just like going from Bach/La campanella shit to making begginer work.

Any commercial writing is by their own nature, just begginer shit, like commercial music.

Because literary shit doesn't sell.

With such a wide aftermarket you can fine tune and convert your rifle to fulfill whatever needs you wish[pic related].

I'm very sorry to hear that but don't worry there are plenty of viable hobby items (that can be used for self defense if the need arises) available for purchase from your local sporting goods store and even hardware stores for those DIYers amongst you!
Don't let anyone get you down, life is full of surprises and opportunities! It's always a joy to learn new things and put that newfound knowledge into practice.

I doubt any of the colors used so far have any meaning.

Or are they the memories and feelings she had with someone else who is now dead/gone?

I think I get it but this shit is still retarded and it is hard to know what was intentional and what was just AI derping/writer being retarded.

So? I don't expect that comic book to even be good, anyway. I'd take another One's webcomic even if the art was shit over any comics with AI-based drawing. I don't expect any good story from someone that thought AI-based art was good for his story.

It's really weird how the 3dpd porn market works breaking all existing logic of the art market. There are infinite pornhubs, onlyfans and feetpics accounts with 10x the number of subscribers for each despite providing extremely similar "more of the same" content, yet concept artists are reportedly already being put out of order over stable diffusion

>> No.6234580

>>6234572
I mean it's already similar, there's a billion digital artists all over twitter, pixiv, fanbox, etc. It's a very competitive industry and for every person who "made it", there's thousands of other people grinding away unnoticed. If this tech "evens the playing field", eventually becoming indistinguishable from drawn art, there's no way it won't destroy jobs, starting with stock illustration/ editorial artists, then concept illustration for indie games, then higher end professional work, and eventually bespoke popular patreon and fanbox artists. To film a porn movie, even amateur, requires a effort - setting up camera, editing, the actual sex props, etc. "Prompting" requires less than a minute of your time and you can generate infinite variations.

I think the top 1% who made it into magazines and AAA will still be safe because these companies want to be able to copyright their imagery, plus use the artist's prestigious namefor the sake of vanity, but they will probably use AI to do most of their job anyway. So the art field isn't remaining intact or crumbling down entirely, it's the worst of both worlds: nepotism behind locked doors

Considering what this technology was like 10 years ago and where it is today, I give it less than 10 years before you can't tell the difference between AI and the most talented human artists. At that point, there is no way for human artists to retain their value since people won't be able to tell if they're actually using an AI anyway. The idea that humans have a future in art is pure cope.

And yet you seem more desperate for such a thing to happen, than any artist here does trying to deny it.

Why do we not have perfect language translation programs?
Why is voice recognition software so jank?
Why is virtual reality taking so long?

I personally don't think it's getting much better any time soon, but you techy cocksuckers are really desperate for this for some reason.

now it isnt, but in 2 to 4 years? if they fix thing like hands and face further, which already improved massively in the last year, and implement some visual based posing, for example (you input a photo of a pose and the ai copies it with a target style and character) there will be very little left for regular artists to compete over.
i see it as being a chess player, you cant beat a computer but you can still play for the fun of it.

Only for very simplistic things. If I want an image, for example, of Goku and Batman together at a summer picnic while Mario is working the grill with Charizard who is in a mega evolved form, as an artist I can draw that no problem, while the AI is obviously going to struggle. That's not even getting into niche/new characters or specific OCs.

Concept artists may have to be slightly worried. Any other regular artists? Nah.

Didn't something similar happen with one of the writing AIs? AIDungeon or something. I remember people throwing a fuss.

They'll add clauses to block those prompts probably, or use algorithms to screen the results. Either way it's algorithms all the way down.

Yes but to elaborate, people practice figures or portraits because it contains all fundamentals and is a good test of skill.

But, AI doing “floating” portraits or figures means little by comparison. For example, the study mentioned in the article below prompted “a spoon in a cup” and the results looked like professional product images but a cup “on” a spoon look like picrel. This is because AI doesn’t have understanding, it’s only copying patterns, which they exploited with simple relational prompts instead of complex ones.

https://www.unite.ai/is-dall-e-2-just-gluing-things-together-without-understanding-their-relationships/

And according to the study, they might abandon text to image entirely due to it’s inherent limitations for general AI….
