Today's beg challenge: Draw a tree.

If you are a /beg/inner or /int/ermediate in art, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice.
Use this thread instead of making new threads or post in the drawthread with fundamental exercises.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS using one of the following methods:
1. screenshot the image and post that instead
2. change camera capture settings to something smaller
3. send to computer and resize in MSPaint

READ THE STICKY:
New collaborative sticky (anyone can edit): https://hackmd.io/UMnZVhNITW-T2wZpHw6d0Q
Old: http://www.squidoo.com/how-to-draw-learn

RECOMMENDED BOOKS FOR BEGINNERS:
- The Art and Science of Drawing
- Perspective Drawing Handbook
- Vilppu Drawing Manual (and literally any other book made by Glenn Vilppu)
- Figure - Design and invention
- Pen and Ink
- The Natural Way To Draw

RECOMMENDED BOOKS FOR INTERMEDIATES:
- How to Draw by Scott Robertson
- How to Render by Scott Robertson
- Color and Light: A Guide for the Realist Painter by James Gurney
- Morpho: Anatomy for Artists (and Literally any other book made by Michel Lauricella)
- Anatomy for Sculptors

TRY TO BE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK.
When giving feedback, avoid vague "advice" - point what's wrong and try to give the anon you're quoting a clear direction to improve their art (study heads < watch THIS VIDEO about head structure, read THIS SECTION of THIS ARTIST'S BOOK, etc).
You, feedback seeking anon, should also try to be clear and concise when asking for critique/help. When posting your artwork, say what you want help with, and what's your goal with the study/artwork.

I'm here to just tell you guys that I'm extremely happy and proud of my shit today, and I'm never even fucking satisfied.

I've seen somewhere here a oc called Mandy done by Dean Yeagle and I'm in fucking love.

I've worked goddamn 2h studying her amazing features, mirrored that shit, broke her apart and redrew. She's so fucking pretty.

Best part? I've overlayed it to see where are my shit mistakes and shit looks traced, fucking traced!!!!

She's just so fun to draw, I'll fucking draw the shit out of her today.

Drawing feels fucking amazing and I hope you're having at lease half of my fun doing it.

Learning realism isn't "learning realism" its just learning how things actually work in real life. Which yes, you do need to know because it almost always applies to stylized drawings as well and the same fundamentals that apply to realism apply to anime except without the wonky anime filters that make it hard to understand.

You don't need to be a master of real life anatomy, but you do need to be able to understand it and the reasoning behind specific stylization choices.

That is Loomis though (Huston)? I've finished Loomis years ago. That was my Huston study. Didn't bother mastering shading because smudging looks better than crosshatching (imo) and my goal was to understand the construction of the face, in order to apply it to anime faces. Didn't help in the slightest. However as you can see my placement is 99% accurate here, that's when I decided to move on.

All I will tell you is that grinding does not give gains, only revelations. There are spikes of improvement each time you have a revelation, grinding will get you nowhere. It's all mental/spiritual/knowledge based. That's how I improved even after taking a 6 month break.
Always find new challenges. Don't grind at the same level, just move on to the next challenge that you've never attempted and that's how you keep improving.

How do I draw boxes in relation to each other in perspective? This is a pre-req for constructing figures but I can't grasp the feel and need a proper way to calculate things. I can apply 1, 2, 3 point perspective onto a single box but as soon as I add a 2nd object into the scene things start falling apart. Eg. here I want to draw 2 boxes underneath the black box one on each side of it but I think I messed up the scaling somewhere and don't understand.

try subdividing off the black box and then multiplying in the direction you want (in this case down, and then towards the vanishing point). repeat as needed to get correct sizes.

"Real" perspective was not used in art until a few hundred years ago. It's easy to look at medieval european artwork and say "yeah and art before that sucked," but extant historical far eastern art made without perspective is exquisite and beautiful. Something weird you'll notice the longer you stay on /ic/ is that the spirit of the board has this internally-inconsistent definition of "good art," where it follows the fine art principles of the nineteenth century but also it has to be anime and the most important thing is beauty but only if it follows strict rules that make art look clinical.

Works from "good artists" get posted here as examples of what people aspire to, and crabs will literally say that these fulltime professional artists' work that is highly visually appealing is "bad" because the artists have "bad" perspective or they don't do fully-detailed backgrounds or even very /beg/ observations like "they have cold light and warm shadows, it's supposed to be the other way around" (I've literally seen that one before, hilarious).

Again, I'm not saying to disregard perspective. I'm just saying it isn't something that transforms your whole understanding of art. Perfect perspective does not actually elevate a piece much more than "good enough" perspective unless you're specifically looking for perspective inconsistencies.

Like take >>6227221 for example. You might or might not like the goofy subject matter, but either way, it's a piece with bad perspective from an artist known for teaching perspective (the arch is in a different perspective from the rest of the scene, which was done to improve the composition, which is WAY more important and WAY more fundamental than perspective will ever be, and the artist relies on the figures obscuring part of the building to keep this from standing out to the audience as a problem). He has pieces with better perspective and clearly knows what he's doing, but he eschewed perspective deliberately here.

you can 'feel the form' kek but its just that your chest and pelvis rectangles are pointing to different vanishing points because they are rotated differently (which is completely fine) but in this case its a completely unnatural pose that can barely be done (try it yourself!)

oh btw it helps to think of this in terms of camera angles not actual transformations of a cube - though they are functionally equivalent. top to bottom is the camera moving up looking down on the box, left to right is the camera moving to the left around the side of the box.

Because hard, well defined black lines that separate different parts of the anatomy rarely exist in real life.
Instead of a hard edge try using a gradient towards shadows, it makes things look more natural.
IRL there are black lines defining each part of our surroundings, we just see blobs of colour and value.

If you want I'll redline it later (can't grab my tablet right now because it's hailing), but
>arms are pretty bad- the visible arm you were probably trying to foreshorten, but the cross-contours make it look like it's just very stubby, so the old one's actually more proportionate
>good effort with the traps and collarbone, especially for anime, but the collarbone is still pretty weird- it would go more straight across rather than coming up in a point
>some lines are still very shaky; this can be hard to deal with if you draw in ink, and even with high line confidence and control you can still just fuck up sometimes and it would be shitty to start over every time (I drew primarily in ink for years so I know this pain), but it's still an issue either way
>you're pillow shading pretty badly, meaning that instead of a clear lightsource, there are just shadows around all the edges (which even if the viewer were holding the lightsource would leave only a very thin shadow around all the edges with a harder edge), and there appear to be zero cast shadows, though it does seem like you're thinking about ambient occlusion to at least some extent, so props for that
>at your skill level if you want to commit to traditional media it's probably time to invest in BETTER media- the pencil scratches, resulting from shitty pencils, shitty paper or both, and the very light values for that matter (on the skin is okay, but the dress should definitely have some pitch-black parts because I know the character's dress is not only black but glossy, meaning it'll have mostly hard-edged highlights and very dark/saturated shadows)
>you also don't seem to be thinking much about relative values, because you made her hair too dark in the newer one- ironically your colours/values look generally better in the old one, though you barely rendered that one at all beyond some scratchy colouring-in
and last but not least
>you drew marie instead of callie, zero improvement in this regard

No, (like most people, I think) I really enjoy gesture drawing, though for some reason it's hard for me to get started. I can jump right into a drawing because I want to do some character design or I have an idea I really want to get onto paper with something better than imprecise words, but it's so hard to do that first gesture. Once I start it just flows though. Gesture drawing will make you better at anatomy, anyway, and all observational drawing will make you better at perspective.

That said, while I think many people undervalue gesture, I think many others also overhype it. It's not a be-all-end-all or anything, and there is beauty in a more rigid and academic style that comes from pure by-the-books construction. There's an artist like that over on the /tg/ drawthread who definitely makes some amateurish mistakes sometimes, but whose (very stiff) art, made by first posing 3D models and using them as reference, I find appealing, and it's about as rigid and non-gestural as you can get without just drawing everyone T-posing. He also prefers to draw emotionless or robotic characters, so his style fits the subject matter. Any "flaw" can be an element of style if you do it confidently and intentionally.

The parts where to forms meet, blocking light from reaching them from most directions, are where you see occlusion. The outer edges where there's no nearby form to block the light would not receive occlusion shadows. In fact, in MOST lighting the edges appear brighter because of something often mistakenly called the "Fresnel effect" (pronounced like fennel but with an R; the actual Fresnel effect is that light that gets reflected at a wide angle becomes polarised, but it's become the common term for the way that light reflected from an obliquely-angled surface appears to get clearer and glossier, because more "points" of light/quanta/photons are piling up in a smaller visual space). That's why rim lighting tends to look so good and why core shadows/indirect highlights make things look realer than real if they're absent in a reference but added in a painting, because it emulates "perfect" lighting on a clear day.

Yes. They are different layers, normally each one of them has a focus like first layer the basic construction, the second the unpolished end-drawing and the 3 background. They are in different colors so the artist can see more clearly if any part of the drawing dont fit well with another, if the perspective is ok, if the figure is harmonious.
