If you are a /beg/inner or /int/ermediate in art, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice.
Use this thread instead of making new threads or post in the drawthread with fundamental exercises.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS using one of the following methods:
1. screenshot the image and post that instead
2. change camera capture settings to something smaller
3. send to computer and resize in MSPaint

READ THE STICKY:
New collaborative sticky (anyone can edit): https://hackmd.io/UMnZVhNITW-T2wZpHw6d0Q
Old: http://www.squidoo.com/how-to-draw-learn

RECOMMENDED BOOKS FOR BEGINNERS:
- The Art and Science of Drawing
- Perspective Drawing Handbook
- Vilppu Drawing Manual (and literally any other book made by Glenn Vilppu)
- Figure - Design and invention
- Pen and Ink
- The Natural Way To Draw

RECOMMENDED BOOKS FOR INTERMEDIATES:
- How to Draw by Scott Robertson
- How to Render by Scott Robertson
- Color and Light: A Guide for the Realist Painter by James Gurney
- Morpho: Anatomy for Artists (and Literally any other book made by Michel Lauricella)
- Anatomy for Sculptors

TRY TO BE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK.
When giving feedback, avoid vague "advice" - point what's wrong and try to give the anon you're quoting a clear direction to improve their art (study heads < watch THIS VIDEO about head structure, read THIS SECTION of THIS ARTIST'S BOOK, etc).
You, feedback seeking anon, should also try to be clear and concise when asking for critique/help. When posting your artwork, say what you want help with, and what's your goal with the study/artwork.

digital art introduces many things harmful to a new artists. one is just more tools and information shoved at you at once making it harder to pick up.

the other big one is control. digital art always has a disconnect from your hand, even on screen tablets its not a natural feeling. this makes it much harder to get the physical feeling behind drawing. with traditional there's a direct connection between your hand and what your drawing without any digital fuckery, and that's extremely important for the basic hand eye coordination and physical technique /beg/s need to build

DaB tells you to draw hundreds of boxes (between the lessons and the challenges likely upwards of 400 boxes) without ever holding or looking at a real box.

This is absolutely pants-on-head retarded and is directly at odds with its objective of linking your intuitive sense of 3d with your drawing. It has a real impact on the students too, because they think of boxes as a set of dots which adhere geometrical geometrical relationships and have no idea what natural perspective/distortion/forshortening etc actually looks like.

DaBs first and only foray into observational drawing is in lesson 2 where it asks students to accurately copy the shadows from a crumpled sheet of paper IN PEN AND INK. That is the literal dumbest fucking thing to I have ever seen.

The lack of observational techniques could be forgiven if DaB was a second or third resource, but it markets itself (and sells services) to absolute beginners and if you peruse the discord it clearly does not work.

Anon who wrote most of the collab sticky here. Why not just include both stickies? I learned a lot from the old google docs one and it has a lot more info on other stuff like art supplies and stuff. It helps to have multiple perspectives, and the stuff I wrote is all "first draft" shit, it needs to be edited and it might actually not be that useful to beginners. Anyways, it was all just an exercise in shitting out what I knew and have been thinking about for the past 5 years; i expected it all to probably disappear after a while. Plus, none of you know how good of an artist I am and I could just be some dunning kruger fool.

You could try using vectors in illustrator or paths in photoshop to make some art. But I guess a drawing tablet is a must this days, save some money little by little and buy a used one if that's what you can afford.

If that's not an option but you do have a smartphone, you could always build one of this bad boys instead.

You will need 4 things
1) An empty pen
2) Some metal wire
3) A cotton swab
4) A bit of water

Just like in my picture you can see I cut the head of the cotton swab and put it in the empty pen. Then wrap the metal wire along the pen making it touch the soft part of the cotton swab (Very important).

Now all you need is just a little drop or 2 of water in the cotton swab to start drawing on your smartphone. (The more water the swab absorbs the longer it will work, but don't over exaggerate)

I recommend you to use Medibang on Android, it's free but with enough options to get you started. Try it, it's like in the old days of ink writting, when the cotton swab dries up you just wet it again to continue.

I dont really see difference between trad or digital for simple black/white pencil creations. You do exactly same stuff with just few minor differences like digital having easier time fixing errors and trad offering superior feedback. I was always computer "nerd" so digital painting allures me more than trad.

Sure there are digital traps like overusing undo, nonstop adjusting zoom/canvas angle or using fuzzy brushes to mask your shitty lines but trad has these as well: eraser, moving paper around and charcoal.

Now if you argued colors or texture now here the differences are massive and i am not sure which is better. But digital sure should be easier and cheaper in the long run i guess.

>>6216827
Why asking me? If its a jab at GIMP then its not really accurate, gimp has everything your fancy apps have as well, you can even load it up with brushes stolen from photoshop. Anyway pic related. It has fuzzy brushes and it even pick up pen pressure for few of them, but it doesnt really have opacity and "eraser" is just brush with background color so my answer is: NO it cant produce everything.

Did you plan out where you were going to place your lines? Did you ghost the lines a few times before making the mark? It looks like some of your lines are little jaggy. All of your edges should be smooth, confident strokes. The motion line should pass through the center of the boxes.

It's not terrible, and I think you should try it again and take your time.

you will literally hear conflicting things about EVERY art-learning resource. Until you try it yourself you shouldn't care what others (especially on /ic/) say about any source and anyone who says differently is a permabeg crab who doesn't understand that people learn, and respond, to learning resources differently
if you're worried about "wasting your time" don't, firstly, you lack the ability to draw in the first place so even if you don't level up through x,y,z resource then in the end you haven't lost anything, set aside your ego and realize that your time isn't that valuable anon. the catch-22 of learning to draw is that you won't know the optimal path you should've taken till AFTER you have already learned how to draw. such is life, no point obsessing over where to start.
>tl;dr close your eyes, pick a random beginner's resource and just start with that. if it doesn't work for you, rinse and repeat till you find one that fits your learning style.

Hello BEG, todays chapter made me realize that the school system failed me twice:
1) why did none of the sport teachers told me how to count calories so i could stop being obese before i discovered 4chan /fit board?
2) why didnt art teachers teach me how to not symbol draw? Like what was even point of the classes?
What is your opinion on art classes? The book claims kids stop drawing around age 10 because thats when they start developing strong spatial awareness and their doodles no longer appeal to them so they on average give up. Why are art teachers useless? Is it by design to keep normies uncreative soulless NPCs?

I am like 30% done with it, its extremely wordy book and it seems its only about curing symbol drawing but i bet people who are incapable of filling in the blanks will appreciate the very tight instructions for the exercises and then essays explaining what the training did and how

I cant really paint but even my limited tries at it taught me you need to switch between hard smaller brush for edges and broad fuzzy brush(es) for everything else. Your animal is fuzzy everywhere which isnt accurate depiction. Pick brush with solid texture, make it thin and make "outline" on places where are HARD edges to boos up the painting.

Did they also move your jaw for you when you were overeating?
>2) why didnt art teachers teach me how to not symbol draw? Like what was even point of the classes?
Good artistic sensibilities can only be cultivated and not taught. The point of art classes is to expose students to tools and materials that may have gone through their entire lives without experiencing due to the low value placed on art by society. It's ultimately incumbent upon you.
>The book claims kids stop drawing around age 10 because thats when they start developing strong spatial awareness and their doodles no longer appeal to them so they on average give up.
The fallacy that all "how to draw" books are sold upon is that anyone can learn to draw. Not everyone is destined to be an artist. Most children simply find other hobbies or discover new talents.

I started drawing again yesterday evening, filled a few pages with circles, ellipses, and lines. I forget where I got this idea but supposedly it makes you better at drawing circles and lines.
I seem to have kept most of my ability from a few years ago. Today I go back to Loomis, hopefully my ability is still at the same level it was.

Do you find yourself losing much ability if you take a break for a long time? (A year or or more)

about krita
what's the difference between 600and 300dpi ? is it super visible on finished piece ?
also i keep running out of paper space when i practice so i decided to just zoom and make smaller scribbles is there a way to select part of that scribble and scale it ? i mean it's vector art no ? it should be scalable without a loss in quality
thanks for patience

gimp retard here
>dpi
dpi stands for DOTS PER INCH, its irrelevant value for digital artists until you plan PRINTING your art ON PAPER. the only relevant shit for you is RESOLUTION. find out resolution of your monitor, multiply it by at least two (or more if you want) and use that as resolution for yout canvas. draw mostly zoomed out (like 25%~66%) and when you encounter complex areas (like hands or face), zoom in (100% max, never go past that zoom because then it starts to produce blury shit)
>keep running out of paper
pick one of these or combo:
increase your canvas size resolution
make new file and draw there
make current layer smaller (layer>scale) to make space and then simply create new layer to continue drawing on
>vector art
it isnt vector art, krita is for painting raster images. if you want to work with vector art, there are completely different apps just for that. pic related
