Today's /beg/ challenge: Draw a Lynx.

If you are a /beg/inner or /int/ermediate in art, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice.
Use this thread instead of making new threads or post in the drawthread with fundamental exercises.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS using one of the following methods:
1. screenshot the image and post that instead
2. change camera capture settings to something smaller
3. send to computer and resize in MSPaint

READ THE STICKY:
New collaborative sticky (anyone can edit): https://hackmd.io/UMnZVhNITW-T2wZpHw6d0Q
Old: http://www.squidoo.com/how-to-draw-learn

RECOMMENDED BOOKS FOR BEGINNERS:
- The Art and Science of Drawing
- Perspective Drawing Handbook
- Vilppu Drawing Manual (and literally any other book made by Glenn Vilppu)
- Figure - Design and invention
- Pen and Ink
- The Natural Way To Draw

RECOMMENDED BOOKS FOR INTERMEDIATES:
- How to Draw by Scott Robertson
- How to Render by Scott Robertson
- Color and Light: A Guide for the Realist Painter by James Gurney
- Morpho: Anatomy for Artists (and Literally any other book made by Michel Lauricella)
- Anatomy for Sculptors

TRY TO BE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK.
When giving feedback, avoid vague "advice" - point what's wrong and try to give the anon you're quoting a clear direction to improve their art (study heads < watch THIS VIDEO about head structure, read THIS SECTION of THIS ARTIST'S BOOK, etc).
You, feedback seeking anon, should also try to be clear and concise when asking for critique/help. When posting your artwork, say what you want help with, and what's your goal with the study/artwork.

Depends on what I'm drawing and what techniques are needed to get there. That's a pretty common go-to grip though yeah.
I generally hold mine with the pencil resting between my pointer and middle finger.

>Are you supposed to use the same grip on a tablet stylus?
No. You use grips like that with pencil to keep your dumb ass hand off the page and prevent smudging. There's value to holding pencils in different ways to render different textures, but that's with analog medium.
Stylus and tablet is like smashing rocks together. It requires none of the subtlety that real mediums do.

Probably should have put more effort into it but, yeah... Most of the attention was supposed to go to his hand mostly then everything else, I'd need to have better value control to darken the bottom half and then everything else to not lose focus if this makes sense to you.

I see mixed up the reply, here's some of the more completed drawings I made this year. It's tiring being berated over drawing studies, considering studying is what's ultimately going to help me progress and the idea that I don't draw anything else is kind of stupid. I don't post all my drawings on /ic/, I usually just post my studies here because

Quick sketch isn't really something you study for the sake of quick sketch, its more a way of practicing what you know. Like you might learn a piece of construction or a new way of measuring, but if you stop there you are just going to forget it. By doing say ten quick sketches and applying the technique you can turn it into an automatic habit that you will never forget.

Also the first few minutes of drawing generally have the most impact on the final result so just doing a bunch of quick sketch is a way to practice that. I'm just setting up interesting volumes that look plausibly correct and could be taken further if I wanted.

Like the pic you posted, right? Notice the lack of soft edges apart from colour gradients (blush and areolae). Also pay attention to stuff like the rim lighting. Make note of the primary light source: Behind and a bit above the viewer, though there are some inconsistencies around her legs. This kind of light source (coming from roughly the same direction as the POV) can be hard to make look good and often results in "pillow shading," and if you pay close attention to this image you can see some tactics to overcome that (the inconsistent light direction on the legs actually helps, where it seems to be coming from the left on her thighs and right on her calves so at a glance it's processed as directional light; so does her pose, with the bottom part of her arms being shaded and her hat casting a shadow on her face, driving home that the light isn't coming from the viewer but a bit above them; strictly speaking some shadows are missing here, though I'd say it's good enough).

What you did looks closer to the kind of shading I did, which was based on a particular piece and actually requires a softer edge on the shadow to look right (as well as a bit of indirect/rim light and a faint specular in the middle of the core shadow- I was studying a loli artist who likes drawing bath and sauna scenes that day, and naturally the skin he renders usually looks a little wet, though he doesn't usually draw sweat beads or trails). For good shadow _shapes,_ do them on a separate layer, and use an eraser to manipulate the shape. Try using that to define subtle interior contours (where they would actually be, of course), like around the bottom of the ribs and the crease in her belly going toward her bellybutton in the reference pic you posted. Also don't be afraid to colourpick (use the eyedropper) to see how the shadows and highlights in someone's art relate to the base tone, and pay close attention to little details like the speculars (white core lights) on her thighs.

>gesture
Why don't you give it a try? You'll see its value very quickly. It's extremely low-investment.

Anyway it has a LOT of benefits and basically trains every fundie at once, except colour theory.
>as you get better at quickly eyeballing proportions and lines of action/force, you naturally pick up better anatomy
>makes you recognise attractive compositional elements and get better at composition rapidly (what you learn from gesture in this regard will apply even if you don't plan on drawing humans much in the long run)
>improves your faculty for accurate observation- we tend to draw human figures "straightened out" and gesture teaches you not to do that, which "breaks in" the skill of seeing things as they are and not as symbols
>since you do them quickly (usually with a timer going), it forces you to learn better line control instead of repeating the same line until it's right
>it works as a wrist stretch/warmup, removes creative blocks, etc; basically it gets you drawing in a low-investment way that doesn't require inspiration, confidence or anything else
And so on. It's like the ultimate iterative practice.

You're on the right track. Note the line above her mons pubis in the ref is both much higher in the ref (ignore her belt), and only visible because her torso is bent forward and the light accentuates it. Note the kinds of shapes used too- Long, tapering streaks for highlights and shadows themselves, and a lot of curves outward from the core of the forms to make them look more three-dimensional.

Kicdoc is one of my favorite artists. Nta but just study your favorite stylized artists.

You’ll pick up on subtle stuff. Like big hands and big feet go well with skinny lanky figures. Small hands and small feet usually go with chunky / fat characters. Long torsos need even longer legs. Short/no torsos can pair with thick asses and thicc thighs. After doing a lot of studies you will develop a certain taste, and you end up fixing all your drawings until they ‘look right’ which just ends up matching your taste.

Drawing a box doesn’t help you put shit into the box. Sure you can draw a box in a scene and THINK about where the character goes in, but when the rubber hits the road and you have to actually DRAW the character in the box, there is no amount of boxes that will help you draw that figure in the box.

All the tutorials skip to the end where the figure is perfectly in the box in perspective and perfectly proportioned. But they skipped the part where they draw 100k figures and not 100k boxes.

Yes, you can reverse engineer a figure into box primitives. But nobody is building the figure in the box out of primitives. At the point where you have enough skill to do that, you didn’t need to build it from primitives.

Drawing a box is like drawing a floating eyeball. One day you will need to draw the rest of the face, and you’ll be fucked. Then you’ll need to draw the rest of the head, and you’ll be fucked again, then you’ll need to draw the rest of the body, and you’ll be fucked again, then you’ll need to put the body in a chair, and you’ll be fucked again, then you’ll need to put in the background, and you’ll be fucked again.

This guy knows >>6215102 what i am talking about.

Drawing 250 boxes takes about 1 hour what’s next?

Also, you don’t need to learn perspective from a book. You just need to know when you have to fix your drawing when it looks wonky, and you need to know when you can’t fix it and move onto the next drawing.

What do you want? It’s just a sketch. And you only made one sketch.

In my opinion, the purpose of a sketch is to practice a fundamental or skill so you should have made 30 sketches practicing your skill. OR the sketch is to flush out an idea, so you should have made 30 sketches iterating on your idea.

In either case, make a finished piece. Or atleast ink it, or draw in pen with no undersketch instead of pencil, or draw her from different angles with different expressions, or draw the rest of her body, or draw her in a comic, or draw her in a scene, or color it.

Your lack of (You)s and replies should have been enough of an indication that you should do more.

But at least you didn’t draw a box

Pretty good anon! I feel your shadows are too binary either super dark or barely existent. Feel free to use more midtones to show the shape of the things you draw. I need to ask do you get this weird frightening feeling that you are ruining your picture when trying to give it shadows? If yes then do not worry you are not ruining it, you need to push through that fear , you will be fine after. I had this feeling for a long time that when I needed to add shadows to the skin of character I felt like I am making it dirty when I made it darker. It took awhile to overcome this feeling.

Keep doing your thing!

Apart from studies, some things I recognise that might not be obvious if you aren't familiar with this part of the software is that they did their highlights with what appears to be a CSP glow dodge layer (there's probably a PS equivalent, I don't remember Krita having one though). Hair highlights are done with a soft round (airbrush), skin highlights are (probably) done with a regular pressure-size hard round, and clothing highlights with a pressure-opacity hard round, probably to deliberately produce different textures on each. Looks like either a multiply layer or hand-picked shadow colours on a normal layer for shadows, all of which are airbrushed, though the shadows are only obvious on the hair, and it looks like they manually LIGHTENED her choker for the indirect light rather than just tinting the shadows.

Note their line quality and colour actually plays a big role here, so pay close attention to it. Most of their indirect red lighting is actually expressed through the outline itself.

Okay so one useful thing to do when you're struggling with literally anything, is to try and break it down to something that you can find in a still life.

Get a mid-sized or large ball-shaped object. Throw a cloth over it. Do some still lifes of that. Different arrangements of still life subjects are a great way to help you figure out a similar concept that you're struggling with.

82nd Airborne Division, the most decorated unit in the regular Army.

You forgot the most important thing for maintaining unit cohesion and combat effectiveness: morale.

When you're active duty, you never really "clock out" of work. So allowing your soldiers to unwind in their personal space outside of work hours is important. Barracks rooms are still inspected routinely for cleanliness, as with a uniform. And if there is something wrong with your personal items, your team leader (an E-5) will let you know before your first sergeant or platoon sergeant arrive for the proper inspection.
