Hello /ic/
I’m totally new to all of this. I posted some drawings on /co/ and asked for advice. Most people were helpful, but one guy kept insisting I was an /ic/ regular named “Dive” who spams a “superhero with time powers” in order to have a “pity party.”
Now I’ve never posted on /ic/ in my life until now, it was this very post.
Does anyone know who/what he’s talking about? I searched the archive for “dive,” “time powers,” and “pity party” and couldn’t find anything
Here’s the /co/ thread

Nahh not really. I get what you're saying, as a lot of things that help you tell a good story/make a compelling image are things you need to practice and learn, but a piece of art can be masterfully made but just boring and not really that interesting. Most people here are talking about the ability to draw what they see in their head and make it look good - soul/storytelling/etc will come in a bit later for them. Saying the aforementioned pics are intermediate is not great for encouraging people imo

I would say /ic/ has a very high standard to what it consideres beg / int / advanced. Like what /ic/ might call beg would be called intermediate by most outside of /ic/.

By non artists standards:
-Beg is showing either no understanding or next to not understanding of fundamentals like perspective (no vanishing point or isometric "perspective") (basically pre-beg by ic standards)
-I think all you need to get out of the begginer stage by most standards is basic a basic grasp of perspective , shading, anatomy , not symbol drawing (drawing what you see not what you think you see). Like it doesnt look really obviously off/isnt symbol drawn , it just needs to look like a thing
in 3d space.
-Intermediate would be if it actually looks half-decent
-Advanced or high int if it looks good/could land you some comissions
-Pro would be something like rembrant or what is commonly considered "The masters".

By artists outside of /ic/ id say its:
-No understanding of fundies (beginner)
-Some basic understanding (high-beg)
-Looks decent , no obvious mistakes, could land you some commisions (intermediate)
-Great understanding of fundamentals (pro) (think MC Escher or Rembrant)

I would say by these standards (when talking about artists that are taking it alteast semi-seriously) you would get a sort of bell curve where most would be int , low int or high int , maybe more begs than pros but you get the idea.

should i do studies side by side or just estimate proportion between a monitor and a pencil/paper? I've been doing the latter, but it's hard to nail the 90% accuracy without spending an inordinate amount of time sight measuring (i think using an actual ruler is cheating).

I just got a used cintiq 13 so I can start to do some side by side studies alongside those with paper but the small screen might make it a bit awful.

picrel was two pics i did tonight in 45 minutes. I mean its not good but I'm enjoying it so far.

dear retards,
the blue one is using 3 point perspective in a somewhat elaborate way. she's sitting on the staircase, not "floating".
the first kitchen picture is less extravagant. Both are lacking bounce lighting/reflected light and several other beginner level expressions of light and value, despite the prominent highlights (it looks like only one onion attempted this and the ceiling light fixture but nowhere else lmao). both images have incorrect head perspectives, because quite frankly they know their audience. this is very typical of anime styled drawings, you basically need to slide the 'western' slider bar further to get a decent perspective skull, because you'll have things like noses or actual facial features, and therefore more feature landmarks to align into 3D space.
98% of users here are just terminally biased weebs in favor of anime and will easily be won over by a few highlights here and there, while dying on hills of praising japanese. because it justifies their own shortcomings and bad habits.

overall the drawings are ok, but just bland shameless likes-on-social-media farming tools that can never fail. so i will never hate them for doing this, in fact i may consider joining them. but i'll always hold higher respect for art that can't even be recreated these days traditionally, due to shifting in worldwide interests.

Oh yeah with that one also I first tried to lay in the big shapes and go from there but that didn't work out because it didn't feel right
I deleted it all and started again with doing dune by dune in detail.

No idea I'm sorry, it's from a game called 'Ash of Gods' so that might help? It's heavily influenced by animation probably. Since that's what they said in some interview I'll see if I can find it again but it was old school animation.

how do I help my friend improve without destroying his confidence? He shows me art he spends hours on and it seriously looks like chris-chan drew it. He then asks me why its not doing as well as some big name twitter artist that drew the same character. I was in his shoes once so I know how it feels to love your own art even if its bad, and I dont want to take that away from him by showing him just how wide the skill gap is.

draw with them and casually drop a technique every session.

"oh m8 how big should I make this circle for the base of this character's skull"

calls their attention to new information without telling them they're lacking in any way. whether they then absorb the new stuff they see you doing and decide to do it themselves... well you can't always lead a horse to water.

So just started this week and working through fun with a pencil, should I work through drawing on the right side of the mind after?

Or after fun with a pencil should I just focus on mastering what it teaches and sketch a bunch before moving onto another resource?

Been trying to actually learn how to draw instead of drawing for the sake of it. Started reading Fun with a pencil a bit ago (Study 2) not that crazy far in it due to other obligations, but that book has been a lot of help in helping me use shapes to construct, something I've struggled with and still struggle with a lot. All the blue-ish gray stuff was drawn on my phone so apologizes if you can't see the construction lines on some of the drawings since there was no layer options on the app I was using.

I think the big thing I'm still trying to understand is how to study art? Like the exercises and directions to go.

I wonder if there's a reason people respond more positively to art that spends more energy trying to look cool than it does trying to look real.

There's nothing inherently wrong with realism, but if you're just going to use that realism to make shit you'd see in any family photo album, then you've literally spent 10,000 hours learning to be boring.
