If you are a /beg/inner or /int/ermediate in art, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice.
Use this thread instead of making new threads or post in the drawthread with fundamental exercises.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS using one of the following methods:
1. screenshot the image and post that instead
2. change camera capture settings to something smaller
3. send to computer and resize in MSPaint

TRY TO BE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK.
When giving feedback, avoid vague "advice" - point what's wrong and try to give the anon you're quoting a clear direction to improve their art (study heads < watch THIS VIDEO about head structure, read THIS SECTION of THIS ARTIST'S BOOK, etc).
You, feedback seeking anon, should also try to be clear and concise when asking for critique/help. When posting your artwork, say what you want help with, and what's your goal with the study/artwork.

I'm going to be brutally honest with you. Your drawings have no appeal. It looks like an amalgamation of a beginners attempt at Disney drawings, it's like the opposite side of the same coin of /beg/s who draw le "anime" but without knowing any fundamentals. There's nothing wrong with trying to emulate Disney's style, but if you actually want to see some improvement you need to drop the cartoon aesthetic and start learning actual human anatomy and proportions. Pick up literally any figure drawing book in the sticky and draw from that, ditch the style until you're at least confident with the human figure. If you can accomplish learning some real fundies, I promise your stylized work will look good.

"don't draw with your wrists" doesn't mean "keep your wrists stiff and only move with your shoulders", right?

>> No.6205845

>>6205841

>> No.6205847

>>6205841
"Don't draw with your wrists" should be "don't ONLY draw with your wrists." Most decent art teachers will tell you to be aware of how using different joints modifies your line control and to use every joint of your arm, and most bad art teachers who are nonetheless decent artists will tell you not to draw from the wrist and then very plainly draw with their wrists if you watch them.

>> No.6205850

>>6205841
That's correct.
To sum it up, basically:
"Use the right amount of your arm and hand for the movements you're doing."
Line work, drawing etc. can all be done with the shoulders and elbow. As you get to more fine detail work you move to more fine motor skills. HOWEVER, they are right in saying you should not be using your wrist to draw. Fingers, elbow, shoulder etc. just lend themselves to it better. If you're drawing by flexing your wrist up and down a lot, that's a habit you should look to get out of.

Otherwise, everything should be relaxed and comfortable. Don't grip too tightly or press to hard. Be chill, the paper isn't your enemy.

Not being mean but you have a severe case of the Dunning Kruger.
Fact: Fundamental of art WILL improve your stylized drawings, this isn't just some subjective statement. Saying otherwise is just pure self-delusion that you seem to cling to in order to endure the hopelessness of your current artwork.
Ask yourself: In the three years that I've been drawing have I seen ANY improvement?
I'm not crabbing you when I say this. Ditch the style and learn the fundamentals. If you don't know what fundies to start with just ask.

As long as you need to be satisfied with it.
Compare yourself to others only for the purpose of getting inspired. Don't get caught up in toxic competitiveness.

>Also should I focus on gesture before anatomy or the other way around?
Whatever works for you. I tend to heavily focus on gesture and body language because I aim for expressiveness and visual impact in my pieces, but plenty of artists prefer a more disciplined approach. Anatomy is always vital though, and should always be a high priority to study.

Ah, that's a good point. The enemy of greatness is the desire for perfection, after all.

You'll know. You asking that question means you may have a sense already, that you're getting too caught up in details. If you are worried about this, I recommend doing speed draws as practice. 15 minutes, 10 minutes, 5, 2, 1, and 30 seconds. Nude life drawing sessions are great, they're generally cheap and generally have a set time for each pose. Look up if there's one in your area, they'd usually be hosted weekly out of some local art gallery, community centre, college or whatever.

Sorry but which method is superior? I find that Loomis method (left) is easier because I can make up the jaw, and whenever I use Huston method (right) my jaw becomes way to big. But I'm watching Huston's lecture right now so I want to be able to use it. What's going on?

Learn real proportions and then exaggerate it for drawings you want with long slimmer limbs.
I like Phos manga and no offense to the artist, but she really isn't a good example to learn how to draw from. Her compositions and story-telling are really good, but the gems are too simplified and and symbolically drawn rather than constructed.
I'd recommend learning from her use on composition and inking, but unless you actually want to get good, you're going to have to pick up a figure drawing book.

Splitting the whole face into thirds should get you the brow line, nose line and chin.
I've drawn from countless references and not a single face has a ratio of 1:3 from nose to chin.
Huston did not say anything about this, if anything he said make the jaw BIGGER. Anyone who has as much experience as him should know that most jaws do not fit his meme specifications. I'm saying he sucks at tutorials and if his 3 hour lecture is this quality all the way am I better off looking at random Youtube face drawing tutorials?
Why do people shill Huston here? Everyone should have encountered this issue through his teaching. I wasted several hours researching this because of his misleading wording.

It changed when you added color because YOU changed it. You changed the values. That's okay if it's what you want, but it sounds like that wasn't your intentions.

So #3 is original greyscale (I'm assuming) and #2 was your colorized version of it. #1 is a black and white version of #2. Compare it to #3 and you can see the differences in values. #4 is if you kept the original values and added color to that.

That said, the values originally are fairly odd in the first place.

To check my values I make a layer on top of my color layer, set it to Saturation, then fill it with black. Then I just toggle it on and off occasionally to check how my values appear and change things accordingly.

multiply layers are mostly good for shading, and even then, you don't want to use pure (zero chroma) values ON a multiply layer, or your shadows will look "dirty." I'd set your value layer to multiply, paint flats under it, then make a colour layer above the multiply layer and go over it, for example, in the same colours as your flats for each region to unmuddy the shadows. Or if you want to play with layer styles more you could do something like pic related- I used a colour layer to tint the values of her body red, merged down, and then painted over the value layer with an overlay layer, so it looks like I simply used a gamut with a reddish neutral tone.

Either of those methods will preserve the value shapes you're talking about and I'm honestly not sure how you used multiply layers to colour or how you ended up losing those shapes.
