I'd imagine he etched or engraved them or passed them off to a craftsman. What does your own research say?

For me, it's Joseph Clement Coll

pen and ink; he learnt by copying etchings, thinking they were pen & ink

>>6202644
I think too; there's nobody else that even remotely come close. Things like >>6202581 just aren't the same at all, they're not as clean, not as well-designed, nor performed as deeply.

It's still technically good, but Booth really sits on top

>> No.6202690

>>6202685
If all you care about is clean lines and autism, sure, Booth is better, but Coll has movement, drama, emotion. He makes Booth's work look like posed statues by comparison.

He's just like me, if I never realized they were etchings and stopped lol

The average renaissance artist had better hatchings. It's just that Booth is tonalistic which appeals to more artists today.
Renaissance hatching also seems more like a natural result of just how they drew. Modern uatchings seem to be more about stylistic quirk.

"Clean" in the sense that Coll's lines look rushed, noisy: he doesn't have the same degree of control/patience than Booth and it shows. And I'd argue that this advanced control is harder to reach, hence is the result of more advanced skills.

He doesn't have the same control over value either (from the two examples you've posted; I don't know his work in depth)

Regarding the figures, this is debatable:the subjects matters often are very different, and thus required to be treated accordingly.

For instance, the following is a pipe organ ads, his treatment of the subject matter is excellent, Coll's style wouldn't have been as adapted:

I think I might just do that, it's such a cool style and now I know it's actually possible.

Nothing special about the holding I guess: make yourself comfy, allow to use full arm motion, and learn to draw long with multiple smaller ones.

Why would you stop? Is it taboo to make sketch in etch style? I do the same and see no problem if the end result looks good

>> No.6208456

>>6207729
I agree with you, at the time it just seemed kind of futile to do it with a pen and figured I should learn to do actual etchings if I wanted to do that style.
