Today's /beg/ challenge: Draw an Egyptian Mau (cat in the OP)

If you are a /beg/inner or /int/ermediate in art, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice.
Use this thread instead of making new threads or post in the drawthread with fundamental exercises.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS using one of the following methods:
1. screenshot the image and post that instead
2. change camera capture settings to something smaller
3. send to computer and resize in MSPaint

READ THE STICKY:

New collaborative sticky (anyone can edit): https://hackmd.io/UMnZVhNITW-T2wZpHw6d0Q
Old: http://www.squidoo.com/how-to-draw-learn

RECOMMENDED BOOKS FOR BEGINNERS:
- Keys to drawing
- The Art and Science of Drawing
- Perspective Drawing Handbook
- Vilppu Drawing Manual (and literally any other book made by Glenn Vilppu)
- Figure - Design and invention
- Pen and Ink
- The Natural Way To Draw

RECOMMENDED BOOKS FOR INTERMEDIATES:
- How to Draw by Scott Robertson
- How to Render by Scott Robertson
- Color and Light: A Guide for the Realist Painter by James Gurney
- Morpho: Anatomy for Artists (and Literally any other book made by Michel Lauricella)
- Anatomy for Sculptors

TRY TO BE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK.
When giving feedback, avoid vague "advice" - point what's wrong and try to give the anon you're quoting a clear direction to improve their art (study heads < watch THIS VIDEO about head structure, read THIS SECTION of THIS ARTIST'S BOOK, etc).
You, feedback seeking anon, should also try to be clear and concise when asking for critique/help. When posting your artwork, say what you want help with, and what's your goal with the study/artwork.

I'll post it here too I suppose
I think my noses are improving already, I'm playing around with a mixture of Angel Ganev's construction methods along with Melkormancin's and it's something I already feel a lot more comfortable drawing. My two biggest issues at the moment are
>Understanding a good shape for the tip of the nose and the planes of the bottom portion of the nose overall
and
>Finding a more standardized construction for the nose that I am comfortable with
I think I'm on the cusp of meeting the second one at least but some advice would always be appreciated

dont feel pressured on wasting money on tools on the basis of a stupid idea pls

plus having a sketchbook and using it in parallel to digital is great and may still do that too, i personally only been using digital to copy bridgman and do anatomy/figure studies while all the rest i do on the sketchbook
again, its all preference dot think you need x y z tool and ignore the shitters that will make you waste money when youre still beg

I have an ipad pro I got from work that they forgot about so I just kept it. It's cool for on the go but I use my shitty 500 dollar xp pen probably 50x more.

It has excellent out of the box colour calibration but you can usually get close enough by just moving your work over to a second monitor occasionally.

Cheap shitty chinese tablets are luck of the draw though. If Zhang was on the ball the day he made yours, you're in luck since it'll last a long time. But if he wasn't tough shit and it'll die in 3 months.

Go for a cheap intous or if you're feeling lucky an xp pen display tablet before dropping 4x on something with 12.9 inches of screenspace first. Lot of guys I know tried digital and went back to trad (mostly atelier folks)

big issue is the forearm and grip on the plate.
being on the outside makes it look weird considering she's holding it toward herself and makes the arm seem smaller.
grip on the plate is awkward for a plate hold.
i actually think the face is fine.

i really don;'t like that lower body though, hips especially look very disconnected and it doesn't really fit any pose that makes sense, i'd actually just crop that and just keep the torso.

Despite what >>6201105 says, if you're actually committed to art, longterm a tablet is a lot cheaper than paper, pens, ink, paints, brushes, etc, because it can last for decades of daily use without needing replacement. I guess for some people electric bills may be an incremental expense that adds up over time, but while I dodge that by living in motels and employee housing, I doubt it adds up to more than art supplies.

Plus digital art is FAR easier to share; Photos and even scans rarely come out just right with traditional art. Digital art is WYSIWYG.

And of course there are the inherent advantages of digital (flawless erasers, undo, layers, brush variety, etc). It has disadvantages too, of course (dot-based rather than flow-based drawing is the biggest one; software brushes tend to form "inaccurate" lines compared to the extreme precision of pens, which for example in the case of using a dipped hair or fine-tipped brush pen to ink can create an almost microscopic line that is nevertheless deep, stark black, but for digital you just get fainter lines instead of finer ones once you go below the width of a pixel), but the advantages are huge both for a learner and for someone who wants a high turnaround on quality pieces.

That said, I still enjoy traditional more. It's a deeply satisfying tactile experience and I don't think I'll ever feel as comfortable controlling a line with a tablet as I do with an inkbrush or fineliner. But I also can't help but feel limited when I use traditional media, and it also feels kinda "pointless" since nobody but myself is likely to ever see it.

The one on the left is better because you can see her hand holding the plate. It makes more sense for that perspective.

And since you're taking feedback, you need to fix her knee. If you notice her face and body are facing towards the viewer. We can see the front of her face and her torso. But her knee is facing the opposite direction. We shouldn't be looking at the back/ inside of her knee. Instead we should be seeing the front of her knee.

But overall I think it's a good pose and a good start.

Oh shit. I also noticed her other leg is also facing in the wrong direction too. I'm half asleep and still a little stoned so I didn't notice it immediately.

Anyway, yeah both legs should be facing towards us. We shouldn't be seeing it back of her legs since her torso and face are in the other direction towards the viewer.

Well, what do you want to draw? What types of works inspire you? What made you want draw in the first place? If you really struggle to come up with ideas, you can use https://drawingprompt.com/ or something similar.
An irrational fear I have and I think many others may struggle with as well, is this feeling of 'ruining' my ideas by not being competent enough to bring it to life in the way I want. So using a prompt seperated from yourself might make it easier to 'just draw'.
Another thing you can remind yourself of is the fact that there are finished art pieces which look very complex, but in the end they are simply lines and shapes just like everything else. You start simple and work your way up, you layer it, you build upon it.
When you first start out a 100 out of a 100 drawings will look like shit. But in the next 100 drawings, maybe only 99 will be shit, next time maybe only 98, and so on. Try to have a healthy mindset of improving upon your mistakes rather than beating yourself up over them, because that helps no one.

Good effort anon!

Some pointers:
First, take a look at the thumbnail. The face sticks out to me as way too bright. There are no hard shadows anywhere, e.g. He is standing under an overcast sky where light comes from all directions, same thing with the neck. Although you are indicating light from the top-right with your armour reflections, that does not translate to the face.

I did a quick paintovermwith some suggestions.

The lighting in your scene should affect all the pieces, including the fabric, the leather etc. The shoulderguards tell me there is a quite strong diffuse white light source, make the other parts respon to the light as well.

Another thing, try to not go to full black for shadows.

Larger strokes would help you as well.

Focus on discrete skills in a holistic setting. Lay down some perspective and background, give it a quick render, do your figures on it, focus on whatever needs work that day. You're now working composition, perspective, value, figures and anatomy and probably some drapery all at once. If that's too much, you'll know where to focus exclusively.

What's funny is in your reference, you can't really tell which direction her legs are facing because of the way it's cropped.

You have two choices though: You can keep her legs positioned as they are but indicate on her torso, mostly in her clothing, that despite walking away from the viewer, she's twisting her body to look towards us.

The second option is to do what I said initially and to have her knees facing towards us.

I'd like to get the hang of drawing cubes that fit near the center of vision and referencing cubes constructed that way would get me closer to realistic proportions as it rotates (and then drawing them without the ref and checking ofc). This:

But they are not? Where did you get this idea?

There are many Vtubers that are also artists in their and they are doing a lot of the drawing on stream because it is in their community. Plus Vtubers (even low key indie vtubers) are often commissioning artists to draw their avatars because that is one of the cheap and surefire way to provide new content their viewers, create merch to sell and just sate their fragile and precious streamer egos that is already held together by bandaids.

The frequency at which you draw won't change that.
Its about how self motivated you are to not comfort zoning and actually pushing yourself to try new things. If you're drawing daily or drawing monthly it won't make a difference if you're not motivated to improve.

Drawing daily can help or hurt depending on your personality. for me it helps because i get bored of what i'm drawing if i keep doing it. but other people might try to force themselves and thus just get into the routine of crapping out the same thing in order to hit your "quota"

It doesn't mean you need to be able to draw it off the top of your head, but there's a difference between not being able to instantly do it and being capable of it.

Yes, tracing is good to get mileage in. Trace images you like for how long you want.

Then when you feel more confident draw images you like but don't trace them, just put them to the side and try to copy them 1 to 1 as close as you can. After you've done that for a while it's time to experiment on your own, take inspiration from images you like but don't copy them 1 to 1. This is how you improve.

I decided to start learning to draw. For my first drawing, I drew a portrait of some random dude off pexels yesterday. Not currently seeking feedback—I think I just need lots of practice in all areas—but I got a good laugh out of how fucked up it looks. Maybe you will, too.

My current plan is to go through Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain, and then afterwards do Loomis and pick up a book on perspective, all while drawing a few things a day and grinding some basic 2D shapes. If anybody has better advice on what order to learn stuff in the beginning, then I'm all ears. I'm just currently going off what's in the sticky.

basically you study it and then break the silhouette with it. you can also fill parts of the area and fade it out. this is an excercise from the drawabox course. tried to do this with the doggo, and it actually didn't turn out too bad. obviously everything else is not that good, but it has some fur texture.

Beg here, I can't really help you correct anything, but I can tell you about the most obvious mistakes I notice at a first glance. I might be wrong on some points.
Her left arm is missing. Looks like she only has a shoulder stub and a hand.
The right arm has to have a really long forearm for her hand stick out from behind her head like that. Also, the hand looks disconnected. I think it's due to the hand being too far to the right in relation to the angle of the forearm. The hand is also realy hard to differentiate from the hair and neck. It also looks like she an additional joint slightly below her elbow. Her upper arm is also very long and doesn't look connected to her shoulder. The perspective on the armpit also looks a little strange.
Her breasts looks like they aren't affected by gravity and are glued on. Especially the right one, and I think the perspective is off.
The face also have a lot of strange things going on, and I'm not talking about things due to stylization.
Her body is 'bumpy' in strange places.
Here's a beg tip I picked up you could use. Try flipping your drawing while making it to catch mistakes. Using reference is also a good idea when drawing poses (and in general)
Other than that, I think you did great, anon. Much better than what I could have done personally. Keep up the good work, you're gonna make it!

>> No.6203191

>>6203189
Thanks for the detailed response! Yeah I am definitely noticing most of these as well, the armpit area is very elongated and bumpy. I did this one with a reference pose though, where you also couldnt see the right arm at all, and the other arms fingers were showing behind her head, but obviously as I didnt trace it some parts became longer or differently shaped and suddenly the entire pose doesnt make sense anymore.
This is already a big help though, thanks and I will keep at it!

Am I doing this hatching stuff right? It doesn't look right...

your facial proportion is off. If we use the nose as the center point of the face the mouth should be higher, the corner of the eye should line up with the nostril so the right side eye should be move out a bit, the jaw should be around where the mouth is place, the ear should be in between the bottom of the nose and the brow and the head itself seems a bit large. Go look at steve hudson head video on youtube to get some proportion.

I always find hatching hard myself, but if you think of hatching as shading it is a little easier. So I would cross hatch around the neck area and right side arm, maybe the cleavage as well. I would hatch around the eyes and depending on your light source maybe cross hatch around the right side.

I don't know if you want to do an anime face or a realistic face. If you want a realistic face then the eyes are a bit large and the mouth is a bit small( If you make a line from the middle of one eye to the other that is how big the mouth should be)

I want to do something in-between. My friend told me my drawings look like Bleach, so I might go for that. That way I can get the best of both worlds: practicing realism while drawing anime. I like to reference eyes from artists like Sakimichan.

continue to study anatomy, that collar bone is all kinds of fucked up, you dont see it portruding like that all the way to the shoulder plus it doesnt connect where youre drawing it and where you would see the collar bone in the fronnt you drew it too low, its basically a second cleavage and this made you draw the chest lower than normal and make her neck longer than normal
basically, simple nnatomy errors fixed with more study

another thig is to also do painting and rendering studies your hard/soft edges are all over the place plus using black a shadow is a big no no so ye, apart from keep doing anatomy studies, begin doing painting and rendering studies too with a focus on color theory
that black spot on her left shoulder makes no sense given the lighting and is a perfect little example of how you seem to be improvising the painting instead of doing it based on gained knowledge, that shoulder spot shouldnt be black again, never use it, but that shoulder wouldnt be so dark since it is catching light from the blue flame and you even know this yourself since you painted the lrim light on the shoulder
again, seems like youre just improvising and copying stuff youve seen without actually knowing why it is done and how

less use of airbrush/soft brushes, learn to pait and render with hard brushes textured or not doesnt matter, just dont use soft brushes or blenders

the pose is stiff as a rock waist up but waist down shows her walking? look at people walking they arent as stiff as that, add some walking/running and other action poses to your figure drawing sessions and pay attention to simple principles like contraposto

gona hammer again on the painting/render part but, havign areas that look painted by hand in cotrast with the digital look of other areas plus the obvious digital effects/tricks used to create the lights it makes everything look cheap and amateurish, really, study how to paint everything from scratch by hand youll be better artist in long run

stop using airbrush/soft brush for painting/coloring and do studies of your fav artists if theres a specific look you want

Only one way to find out. "Selling" yourself is a big part of being an artist, so having some confidence in your work is key in getting work. Not speaking from experience, only from observations.

Get out of your comfort zone. That's pretty much it. Show yourself that you are capable of things you didn't think yourself capable of. Showing your artwork to people is a nice start. If you're easily affected by negativity, I suggest doing it somewhere other than /ic/. A lot of crabs on this board. Hell, if you're really struggling, show them to someone more biased, like your parents or friends. If even that is too much just start hanging them on a wall in your room/apartment. You might not feel proud of them right now, but by constantly seeing them, you'll be reminded of your hard work, and you'll subconsciously start liking them more because we generally have this idea that we can only keep nice artworks on our walls.

Pleasing contours, parts of the anatomy like the hips and linea alba look nice, the gesture looks good.

Face has poor construction and it kinda makes her head look melty. Right breast (the one nearest us, on our left) appears smaller than the left breast even though she's compressing the left breast with her hand. Back of her ribcage juts out too far/too high, around the back ribs taper inward as they go down and also individually curve slightly in toward the spine (though this is a relatively minor complaint because I like the contour it forms). Part of her bicep form looks right but it's like she has two joints at each shoulder and two joints at her visible elbow, so the entire bicep is displaced relative to the elbow and shoulder, while on the other shoulder you have the upward bump where the collarbone girdle rests above the shoulder joint, but it's too far out/the armpit below it is too high (or the angle is just odd), which makes it look like her arm is barely attached to her torso. If you want a redline I'll have to do it later, don't have my tablet on me right now.

Looks nice, i am kind of jealous of how nice your marks are, but your perspective is shit. I feel like you tried to make something like a fish eye effect but your fundamentals are not there.
Try "How to draw" by Scott Robertson if you're really into it (or moderndayjames\drawabox if you're not into it). This book is a bit bloated, just read parts about perspective and then about curvilinear perspective, and your drawings will probably skyrocket in no time.

Hmm, I don't know about screenless tablets since I'm using one with a screen, but I think it doesn't matter that much because what's happening is that your brain is learning and you're expanding your visual library, that's why it doesn't matter, but I'm not really sure, sorry

Thanks for the rec anon, I'll check it out. Many of my drawings were ruined by wonky perspective so I was planning to actually learn it when I have more time. Unfortunately I'm awfully busy.
