If you are a /beg/inner or /int/ermediate in art, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice.
Use this thread instead of making new threads or post in the drawthread with fundamental exercises.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS using one of the following methods:
1. screenshot the image and post that instead
2. change camera capture settings to something smaller
3. send to computer and resize in MSPaint

RECOMMENDED BOOKS FOR BEGINNERS:

- The Art and Science of Drawing
- Perspective Made Easy
- Perspective Drawing Handbook
- Figure drawing for all it's worth
- Figure - Design and invention
- Pen and Ink
- The Natural Way To Draw

-(controversial) Fun with a Pencil

TRY TO BE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK.
When giving feedback, avoid vague "advice" - point what's wrong and try to give the anon you're quoting a clear direction to improve their art (study heads < watch THIS VIDEO about head structure, read THIS SECTION of THIS ARTIST'S BOOK, etc).
You, feedback seeking anon, should also try to be clear and concise when asking for critique/help. When posting your artwork, say what you want help with, and what's your goal with the study/artwork.

Moving it around is a good habit, but you should practice making marks in all directions anyway. Most of the time you'll be able to rotate your drawing surface and you should in theory make marks from the most comfortable and consistent position (generally somewhere with a diagonal between bottom left and top right for righthanded drawing) when possible, but you might end up painting on a static canvas on an easel at some point or something so it's good to be versatile. We aren't really built to make all kinds of motions with our hands on a 2D plane, so it can be very difficult to draw lines in certain directions.

start finding ways to integrate boxes into some construction, you can keep drawing like that but it won't really challenge you much, if you tried to draw some people in perspective though it would encourage you to use the knowledge in an actual case of creation

>>6193691
Makes sense. I felt lost when I was drawing at one point, like I'm simply able to connect lines together and create boxes. It's not engaging anymore. My lines could be stronger, but I think I could develop that with some practice really understanding perspective and construction. I've got my squares, triangles, and circles, it's about time I spent time really understanding perspective and construction, because actually creating things within these boxes, while I know I'm supposed to be able to do that the same way you have scaffolding for a house, scares me and I flounder around.

For anyone who, like me, dislikes reading PDFs, I've restored the Vilppu Drawing Manual to buy brand new. It is a bootleg, but I would say it turned out rather well. It's only USD$20 and has international shipping. For me this was the biggest draw in doing this, because used copies were not only expensive but with the price for shipping it was excessive.

Anyway, feel free to delete if you think I'm shilling, but I thought it would be useful for those wanting to access the book in a traditional format and aren't able or willing to shell out so much for it. And I hope it's good for those of you who wanted it.

You can brrng the figure's right arm in closer to the body. The abdomen is in need of serratus muscles. Lat probably should be higher. Left arm and hand (the hand, especially) could use some adjustment. You can enlarge the vulva. Left knee should be larger due to foreshortening. Lower left leg should also be partially visible in the frame for the same reason. Hair and face look good, though. Even with all these issues, you did decently with the forced perspective.

Call me crazy, but I believe there is an unironic, consorted effort to defame the Fun with a Pencil book. I agree with critics who say it's not a beginner book (I think of it as more a seasoned beginner book), but it seems like there are trolls or crabs who want to cast doubt on the effectiveness of the book just because they can, to confuse people.
If you are a beginner, don't start with this book, but don't let crabs cast doubt either.

Right side of the brain is the only book I've heard of that's considered to be an absolute beginner book. It really comes down to what does someone whose never drawn before even start with? At least fun with a pencil gets people started with something, not sure why it's labeled controversial.

FWP can be a huge timesink that turns off most people new to the hobby and nowadays the type of art alot of people want to make (commercial art/ any art that sells/ fanart etc) can benefit from bur doesn't require the set of skills FWP teaches you.

basically, eventually you kinda just see it in your brain, but you gotta define it in your brain first. you combine the planes with anatomy knowledge and you get a pretty picture. Alternatively, just do online studies, there's plenty of them.

1st step is to draw trough one of those low quality anatomy books which aren't really "made" for artists. Gives you the general idea of what kind of muscles there are beneath the skin.

2nd step is to study properly trough a higher quality anatomy book, such as Bridgmans anatomy. The reason why you don't instantly jump to Bridgman is the fact that he simplifies the muscle groups, and when you don't have the basic knowledge of anatomy you have no clue what Bridgman is doing. You would have to try to copy Bridgman and just guess the simplification he is doing, and the end result is poor anatomy.

3rd After somewhat understanding basic anatomy and more advanced anatomy (such as Bridgman) try to study form (how to draw in a 3Dish manner) > https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3uEtdDvK6Xo Such as Prokos structure basics video.

Then you slowly rinse and repeat the knowledge, draw human figures from life or from photos, slowly add more anatomical knowledge and knowledge of form, slowly but surely try to understand form and gesture more etc.

It's a slow grind.

Pic included is my old Bridgman hand studies. This is the way I learned anatomy, and not to stroke my own cock, but my anatomy is pretty good.

Can you "overly" rely on the eraser when drawing digitally?

I notice I don't have to erase nearly as much when drawing traditionally BUT my traditional drawings takes longer overall and looks less "perfect".

>> No.6194595

>>6194590

Don't think so. Plus, repetition is how you become good. Drawing that one line a few times potentially does more good than bad. Regards the book "talent code".

Its just easier to erase digitally, so you do it more. Plus since you can flip the canvas, you see errors easiers.

>> No.6194604

>>6194595
I think you hit the nail on the head now that you mentioned it. I often flip the canvas drawing traditionally but it requires me taking a picture with my phone and flipping it with the photo app. And I do that at least 5 times in one sitting.

Meanwhile I just flip the canvas when drawing digitally. I didn't even think about that.

>> No.6194616

>>6194604
While drawing that one line doesn't make you a "better artist" per say, it does refine the way you draw that particular line. Potentially more good than harm, but using ctrl z and eraser obessively cuts the time spent on other stuff. So I guess moderation is key.

But yeah, probably not a bad thing. Potentially a good one.

Plus using the eraser digitally is more like using a brush. You can refine a sloppy edge, etc.

But yes. :)

foreshortening tutorials will help to get the wonk out of those hands and arms

also try grouping values into bigger shadow shapes first and then deal with the darkest darks and reflexes within that. shadows rarely go full max dark in a lot of places at the same time and reflexes tend to stay darker than the darkest light color. there's a hierachy there value vise. the value range can be shifted, you can leave out certains values etc, but try to keep it in mind when falling down the rendering rabbit hole

better than prev

still, get paper without grids and lines lol

did you use ref to draw it? the reflex lights on the back are super attention grabbing because of the contrast, unless he's backlit i'd dial them down a bit. they're still in the shadow side, so they should be darker than the lit side. keep trying to simplify and group the values before doing highlights and hyper darks

nice work on the face, you might want to check out how eye sockets work and the ear looks huge, also nose bridge side is very narrow. pic related, most nose drawing schemes skip this part where the nose bridge connects to the eye socket. there's a gentle swoop and then muscle padding on top so it's not like the nose just erupts as wall.

use ref and use anatomy books to understand the underlying stucture of the ref.

keep going m8!

Of course it takes skill and effort, but you have to understand it conceptually before you can practice it and acquire the dexterity to pull it off. And there are far more than two people in this thread drawing with 3D volumes, it doesn't matter if they're doing it poorly or not, they're doing it. The whole point is Loomis is meeting the prebeg where they are at and not dumping a bunch of theory and abstract forms to practice on them. He gives just enough to get a prebeg going and handholds them from potato people to real people.

There's a bit of a difference in doing it properly and someone drawing symbols trying to mimic it. There's exactly 2 people in this thread skilled enough to do it properly, the rest are trying, but aren't doing it.
