I've actually noticed improvement studying like this so far in places and I've only been doing looser drawings off an on for the last week. If you pick an effective teacher to copy, committing to one artist really does open you mind up to alot of things you don't realize you needed improvement on.

>> No.6193516

So then you do it over again until you get it right. That's how learning how to draw works. Rarely will you ever get it right on the first try and even then you have to learn how to get it right consistently.

So when you mess up, analyze what you did wrong and correct it the next time around.

I like the basic idea behind this method, but I'm not sure about just copying from one artist all the time. There are several different artists that I like, and I find myself liking aspects of one more than another. For example, I like the way one artist draws faces, but the way another artist draws bodies more, or how another artist renders.
While I could see copying from one artist at a time, solely dedicating yourself to one artist is what I am skeptical about. I'm willing to try the method nonetheless, but does anyone else not share my reservations?

art is so hard that way, at least with programming you get immediate feedback if your code breaks, if youre new to drawing then your eye is so underdeveloped you cant tell you are fucking up and even if you are decent, your eyes adapt to the shittiness of your drawing over time if you forget to flip your canvas then you will grow a smaller problem into a bigger one since following marks are made on a preceding one

1. Find an Artist who inspires you
2. Make an original drawing in that artists style.
3. Compare your art with the artist you chose
4.Find what you think you can improve on the most in comparison to your chosen artist and study to fix it.

Yeah, I know. But then what happens? No more art, ever? They live happily ever after?

In the book Naoki Saito mentions creating a twitter tag to see other artists progress, does anyone know how it's spelled in Japanese? that's seems interesting and I want to see how much better artists who started a few months ago have gotten.

>> No.6209795

you can but you probably wont gain much from it, IMO at the very least get a decent understanding of form, observation(measuring, etc) and basic draftmanship (how to make clean lines, etc) if you're super beginner before giving this a try.
To practice these things you can use your favorite artists's works.

I really wish he could cut the fat out of his videos. he often reiterates on the same boring sentences over and over again, especially in the openings of his videos
>in this video, we're gonna do this cause many struggle with this
>you may struggle to do this, so in this video we're going to do this
>so in the video we will do this, so you no longer struggle

Does this only apply to anime? I’d potentially like to use this method with frazetta but I’m not sure that it would help.

It's just about comparing your decision-making and fundamental abilities with a model, so any kind of artist works.
Using Frazetta as an example, you'd be comparing what specifically about his choices, composition and stylisation make the muscles and poses appear more impressive, as well as what skills he excels at and you may be lacking in.
