This week, I read Boris Vallejo's Fantasy Art Techniques. It showcases how Vallejo uses and transforms his references into extraordinary figures, and details what he muses on while painting. It is not as dense as I would like in an instructional book, having many images, but is still an excellent read if you are an artist inspired by him.

This is true to some degree. I used to post consistently until I realized that nobody was motherfuck'n retweeting my stuff. Essentially just giving away free art to a handful of losers that don't help you grow. I'd know because I'd ask any potential customers how or where they found me. Your ability to analyze is a separate skill to your ability to create, and is much easier to train in our society. If you are just sitting down and making, the graph is accurate, but if you also spend time consuming other's art, the graph turns more lopsided.

A few options to consider:
>Learn to dissociate your enjoyment of other's art with the quality of your own, so your overly muscular Critic loses training. While this is more mentally healthy in the short term, you will lose potential skill gain.
>Sit down and start grinding. This will absolutely get your Creative on par with your Critic, but the stress of rapidly upping your precision and workload might not be good for most people.

That being said, I don't think it will work for me. Hyperfixation seems like a result of coping with stress: you're doing an pleasurable activity (like drawing) to distract yourself. But in my case drawing IS the main reason of stress, it's painful to draw on this shitty level, to be often unsatisfied with results of my hard work, to hate how my illustrations are coming about and to be scared of disappointing my followers/clients...

I'll have to just keep forcing myself to draw and hope that magically it will turn into a habit.

You just have to shift expectations.
In these cases, I don't sketch the lines (and it shows) and go straight to blocking in.

But if, by some miracle, I reach Jaime/Mullin's level of sketcharoo, I might consider the drawings complete.
I give myself between 30min to one hour tops to make a drawing. If I can't make it look good enough in that timeframe, I know I'm polishing a turd and should do more studies instead.
And yes, I'm a dumbass and need more studies. It shouldn't take me so many strokes to make things readable.
I'll do better when there's less summer.

Aren't you supposed to polish a few turds? How else are you going to ever get past the rough draft stage. If you just practice 30-60min stuff, you'll be good at 30-60min stuff. I'm a shitty beg, but I think turd polishing is a natural stage of development if you actually want to make illustrations at some point. Not saying you're supposed to be just turd polishing, but maybe now and then do that.

It's not like I have never polished a turd, in fact I polished many, sometimes it was worth it to learn some technique, other times I just wasted time for absolutely nothing.

I've just been here for a long time. Modern 4chan is just a shell of its former self. In the old days you could get an active community based around threads here. But that's mostly no longer a thing and the people that could make it possible have moved on to other things and the new blood are mostly from other sites.

The only people who are exclusive 4channers these days are people who use it to shitpost and /pol/bait.
Even I have a hard time still posting here when I just get infinitely better engagement elsewhere.

Last time I checked Courtier (guy who did those really fun drawing sessions, where people would join and draw together, and after an hour they'd all post their work) quit dadcord because of some drama. After that nobody really replaced his role. For a while everyone was still drawing, but with a much more individualistic feeling to it, not as a group. Soon after even that stopped.

I'm way too autistic to start such a group myself, but I'd be happy to join, especially if it was between 6 am and 1 pm dad.gallery time.

First of all, you're getting mad over things that don't really happen that often.
And secondly it IS useful - knowing why others struggle with improving may give you a hint why you yourself could stop improving, about common pitfalls to look out for and to avoid. How is this knowledge NOT useful??


Some dads that stay all the time in their comfort zone could be a lot of better with a wake up call as well. An anonymous comment could serve that purpose. But I agree that majority of artists isn't mature enough to actually appreciate this kind of feedback, so it really isn't helping in that case.

Of the top of my head Indigo sticks out to me as someone who really loves staying in their comfort zone.
