Today's /beg/ challenge: Draw Stewie Griffin.

If you are a /beg/inner or /int/ermediate in art, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice.
Use this thread instead of making new threads or post in the drawthread with fundamental exercises.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS using one of the following methods:
1. screenshot the image and post that instead
2. change camera capture settings to something smaller
3. send to computer and resize in MSPaint

Sticky:

New collaborative sticky (anyone can edit): https://hackmd.io/UMnZVhNITW-T2wZpHw6d0Q

Old: http://www.squidoo.com/how-to-draw-learn

RECOMMENDED BOOKS FOR BEGINNERS:
- The Art and Science of Drawing
- Perspective Drawing Handbook
- Figure - Design and invention
- Pen and Ink
- The Natural Way To Draw

TRY TO BE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK.
When giving feedback, avoid vague "advice" - point what's wrong and try to give the anon you're quoting a clear direction to improve their art (study heads < watch THIS VIDEO about head structure, read THIS SECTION of THIS ARTIST'S BOOK, etc).
You, feedback seeking anon, should also try to be clear and concise when asking for critique/help. When posting your artwork, say what you want help with, and what's your goal with the study/artwork.

nta, but making it more 3D is a very broad goal. If you could maybe provide an example of what your pencil drawing would look like ideally, what is the look and the type of rendering that you're going for, then you'd get some specific answers. Otherwise people are just going to tell you to go render a sphere and give you other generic advice like that.
If you don't have any "that's how I want to draw" pictures saved, then you're, I'm truly sorry to say this, ngmi. You need to have a goal to work towards. Trying to invent what looks good will make you go around in circles.
Did you use a reference for this? She looks like she's taking a selfie, did you base the pose on something?

The best of my recent drawings. What exactly do I need to work on? I think they look ok but there's definitely something big that's off about them. Still, I'm very proud of all these, I think I'm really getting a feel for facial features, though they end up looking scratchy and messy because of the level of detail, so I think I should tone that down. I'm also bad with eyes. Regardless, I'm eager to move on to bodies, but I'd rather have a better grasp of heads first.

i will reccomend to trace original first maybe a few times and then measure everithing as much as you can and constanly check proportions

do some quick gesture studies ranging from 1 minute to 5 minutes, learn the shapes and types of lines behind the movements, the more you do that, the faster you'll get a general idea of building the body and getting the construction right

the gesture stuff from 1 - 5 mins will basically force you into thinking more efficiently with lines and shapes, not really focusing on perfection at first but just understanding the fundamentals; it's easy to "get" the idea of a box or circle being used to create the start of a human body, but learning the ways of manipulating them for certain poses is how you'll get better at using references and then copying them

yeah just spend your time on that, do quick exercises; the good part about them being quick is they get you to think about the shapes fast and figure out a way to imply motion/stance/perspective from the start, even if it's with a single line

it'll be through something like a single line or a circle that allows you to start adding more structure to it, and even if things end up "bad" at the end of the 1 - 5 minute drawing, you'll pretty much know why because the mistakes are right there in front of you

also something like https://www.posemaniacs.com/tools/thirtyseconds is a really useful tool since it gives you a timer and a pose, each pose can be completely different to the last, making you try something new each drawing; and when the time is up, that's it, move on

it might help you a bit more since you're not relying on your own timer or finding your own poses to draw which might eat up your time and distract you when it comes to getting into the drawing

>Is it just one of those things that you'll know when you get there
pretty much this, you'll reach a point where these quick exercises start to feel a bit too easy and you get the general notion of them, and from there you can start working on the details and putting a bit more time into them, adding anatomy and shading to amplify the implication of the pose

starting off you don't want to be getting too adventurous with the things like details in the face/arms/legs/feet/hands, but over time you'll find that you're reaching a point where you can start to consider them and approach them

this is where practice in those individual areas comes in handy outside of the figure drawing, and it can be wise to begin investing some time into those, but returning to the very start of all this: you'll have to have the general idea of how to construct with shapes and lines (which you'll learn from figure drawing)

It was quite a while ago that I had read Hampton, I got to the part about skeletal structure. Really, it's just hard for me to grasp how to draw the poses. They sorta just come out as jumbled lines, but I suppose that's what it's supposed to be. I watched a few videos as a refresher, but honestly, that didn't help a whole lot. In the 15ish minutes I did it, it started to come back and I got better, so I guess I was just being impatient. I think my new routine will be to do these exercises every now and again and just stick to more cartoony stuff for my normal drawings. I'd like to copy other art as well, but I always have a hard time doing that and I don't know if I'm advanced enough for that yet.

you aren't really paying attention to the shapes that help you construct the body, take pic related, you see the arrows pointing at the shapes which help display an idea of where the torso and pelvis are in relation to the pose, you'll generally want to start with those and establish an idea of the perspective

the images in >>6188471 give you a general template of how to approach those different poses; i know it'll be confusing at first because you read hampton and in that book he does a lot of general gesture without shapes and also says never use straight lines, if you're starting out that'll definitely confuse you, but later he does show the construction side

you're meant to use shapes to begin with and then build from there, then using lines to contribute to the expression in the form

>when starting out
if you haven't yet got an understanding of shapes, definitely, but if you've had a bit of time to mess around with them then it's a pretty good area to move on to when it comes to drawing people; you're allowed to be a bit messy and fuck up when it comes to things like arms and legs, but the lesson starting off is grasping how those shapes play into perspective and form, seeing the shapes behind the body and how they're manipulated

the idea is to start with general gesture, and then introduce more elements of figure into it as you progress; if you understand basic shapes then that little jump is a very easy one
>You have to be good at perspective and proportions to do good gesture
the point isn't to become a master at gesture, but understand the ways the lines play a part in conveying the motion and perspective as you introduce shapes into the idea; most people don't "get" perpsective because they don't get shapes or practice them under different perspectives as you teach your mind to think a more 3d sense

drawing with the shoulders help with long strokes, something you would do with a large canvas. If you are using a small sketchpad using your wrist is fine. If you find drawing on the desk is hard you can try and get a drafting table or an artist easel for the desk, both gives you an angle surface to draw on.

Hello. I was curious on how to shade digitally. I use a hard round brush, but it's nothing but hard edges. I don't really know who to watch. I seem to be missing something when I watch tutorials on youtube. Do I use a certian kind of brush, do I blend? I don't seem to understand. If someone could just point me to someone that could help, or a resource. Please and thank you. The image was the first time trying to learn how to do shadows. Im missing where my light source is, highlights, and half tones. This is just a list of the shadow side. Could be wrong on that as well. Im more posting it to show what I mean with shading. Also I understand there's hard edge, and soft edges. Just don't know how to make soft edges.

Soft round aka airbrush creates a smooth gradient (in most software you can control the degree of softness and the size, both of which affect the gradient and the portion that is not graded), blur softens existing edges, erasers come in both hard and soft forms as well, and a lasso tool can be used to pre-define a hard edge with high precision if you don't want to use an eraser on your soft shapes to make hard edges. The way to actually use both kinds of brush and both kinds of eraser to shade is to create a new layer (either a normal raster layer or a multiply layer; the former just applies the colour you're painting, so for instance if you have a red object and you want to add shadows you would select a darker, less saturated, possibly cooler or warmer (depending on your lighting) red, and paint that for shadows; the latter shades the area underneath by the difference between the colour you're painting and pure white, which will make more sense if you experiment with it), so that when you erase you only erase part of the shadow, not the underlying colour layer. Highlights are the same way, though instead of multiply (or even divide, which works a bit more oddly since it inverts hue) you would use something like an add layer, dodge layer, hard light layer or again just a normal raster layer and manually choose your highlight colour.

You can also use hard round with pressure opacity to shade if you're a numbskull, but using only hard round is a meme around /ic/ that some people have started taking seriously and expressing an elitist attitude about. You'll very rarely see professional artists who do this, though it can help give a piece more of a traditional "painterly" feel since it necessarily makes brush strokes visible. However, unless you have a Cintiq that tactic isn't going to work very well either way. It is NOT analogous to shading with a pencil. Soft round with pressure opacity is another story, of course.

There's going to be a ton of potential resources when it comes to learning this stuff. The general idea behind lighting doesn't take much time to understand though. It might even help to read some photography books like Capturing Light by Michael Freeman. Something like a filmmaking or photography book won't just tell you about light and shadows, but will give you diagrams on things like 2 - 3 point lighting techniques.

A really easy way to get into the basics would be to watch films and pause at certain moments, then look at where you think the light sources are coming from. Take into consideration pic related: you have your strong light coming from the left which illuminates much of the frame, as evident by the strong shadows it produces from the objects on the table. The warm orange of the fireplace adds a very nice highlight around the edge of the characters to serve as a backlight that helps them 'pop out' from the background. Then you have a bit of shadow control from the right to serve as a fill, so that the shadows aren't too strong or hiding much detail caused by the key light.

Breaking that down:
>1 strong key light illuminates from one angle, creates harsh shadows
>1 backlight creates background separation
>1 fill light (much lower in intensity as the key light) to bring out some more details in the shadows
You won't always feature 3 point lighting techniques, but it'll be a good place to start with as you visualise which each part plays in the image. After that you can somewhat change things around and use 2 point or just one light source.

My mother bought a frame from the dollar store and I really liked the idea so bought a bunch more. It's no different from setting your wallpaper to your art, just physical, and also your drawings look way better because you look at it from further away and at a different angle. Complex multisource lighting, with zero thought given to texture beyond a surface's reflectivity. Some parts, like the lines on the neck and the way she's gripping the guns look completely amateurish - which contributes to the uncanny valley effect even if you don't consciously pay attention to it - and the parts that are great are all things that are trivial for a 3D modelling software to do.
There's no easy fix, beyond starting with a higher quality 3D model.

Finished Bridgmans Constructive Anatomy.

Gonna do a 2nd copy of Bridgman but using his Complete Drawing From Life book instead this time since its bigger and more detailed.

Yeah, I'm starting to like esdeath schizo. I remember his posts from about a year ago, and he's genuinely gotten better since them. He doesn't let petty excuses like lack of talent or overwhelmingly negative feedback stop him from improving. I wish I was half as motivated as him.
He's not even the biggest schizo in the thread, since this fucking weirdo showed up. >>6188853

But I have a really crappy looking style from doing lazy doodles
Are you telling me there's a chance to evolve from that? I don't need to be afraid of my current style sticking?

>> No.6190678

>>6190668
yes
i'm sure somebody here has a picture of somebody going from retard tier "style" to something actually decent
you have to fuck around a bit yourself of course and experiment to find things you like and try to incorporate it into your own drawings
and most importantly don't get discouraged by mistakes (especially if you're an autistic perfectionist like me) just erase 'em and try again

Ooff, that's what I thought. There's a ton I want to learn and unlearn, the latter being bad habits that kept me stuck. I guess perspective and anatomy? I don't know what all the big categories of art studies are. Is there a handy checklist?

I can finally do 8 superimposed lines without too losing the line too much. It's an extremely small accomplishment but it made me happy

How long did you spend on those sexy torsos? What references did you use?

>> No.6190692

>>6190687
No reference for any of them and about 45ish minutes each? I really want to learn proper anatomy already, just sketching stuff like this and never finishing any of it is painful.

will doodling the sphere, box and cylinder for hours really give me the ability to "feel the form"?
is there no better way to do that?

I just wanted to have fun learning how to draw, do I really need to go through a bunch of books doing shit I don't want to?

Damn. How much time have you spent staring at sexy torsos like those to be able to visualize them and draw them so clearly?

It's not that I spent a lot of time looking at torsos, it's just that they're about the only thing I can draw on my current level.
It's part of why I desperately want to actually learn everything else.

Just going off what you posted you already have a basic grasp of the fundies, at least intuitively. You could go through any of the meme figure drawing books (Vilppu, Hampton, Loomis, etc.).

Vilppu (Vilppu Drawing Manual), Loomis, Hampton (Figure Design and Invention) all have good all around books. Bridgman is great but more esoteric. Usually it just comes down finding the one that clicks for you, some books work well for some people and not for others, and some explain certain concepts better than others, it's a matter of preference. These should all be in the artbook thread OP, check the mega links.

Yes? It's just a matter of practice and knowing what to practice. Materials aren't really the most important thing if you're just working on building a good foundation of knowledge. That becomes more of a priority when you reach intermediate level and want to expand

>> No.6191535

Honestly anon, don't listen to these losers, they're just bitter and like punching down on people. If you enjoy your art, that's all that matters, and that's something that no amount of skill can give you. You'll improve with time anyway, I've found that the hardest part about art is continuing to enjoy it once it becomes all technical.

If you want to improve fast, finding artists on YouTube who are a few levels above you and taking their advice/approach works well. You can also improve organically, by yourself, but that takes far longer

Am i supposed to be doing 30 second gesture drawings? I keep hearing i have to do 30 second gesture drawings for hours a day until i get good but shouldn't i actually be putting effort into my drawings to get good?

>> No.6193046

>>6192704
You need to put effort into your 30 second gesture drawings to get good. A 30 second pose is about reducing the figure to the most important things that you can capture in that time, as you improve, you will be able to capture more.
