Compare Day 1 to Day 3. Day 1 was messy, chicken scratching and very rough. Also no ref.
Day 2-3 and Day 3-1 have very different bodies. Day 3-1 is much more curvy and sexy, and the line is much cleaner. There's a clear improvement and yes improvement does happen in a matter of days.
Also compare to last year's progress. The output is much different. I'm producing months' worth of work in a matter of days after switching to trad.

Good to see you again, Esdeathfag, and it's good to see you went back to weeb shit, at least you get some tangible appeal from all of them unlike whatever the fuck happened last time kek.

Not going to poke on your "progress" even though I dont see much improvement on much fundamentals like usual, but it's interesting to see how straightforward you've become with lines and detail from day 1 to 3, latter being far more cleaner. Mind your proportions and bodies though, you're making the same mistakes from last time. One of this days you're going to learn how bodies structure and anatomy works, Im sure of it.

As for progress myself... Im going to get bitched on, aint I?
One could say there is no progress and I've just been jumping back and forth trying to learn my shit... and for the most part it's true; as of late my art has been an act of constant self discovery and constant sacrificing. Everything to this point has led me to consistency and identity over the stuff I already had. Im satisfied, so I just need to put myself together and finish my pendings just so I can unleash whatever needs to be unleashed.

Showing everyday progress is like weighing yourself everyday. You may lose and gain pounds everyday, but at the end of the day there's not going to be much progress versus doing weekly weigh ins.

It would be better to show a week's progress or monthly instead. That way it would be easier to see the actual progress you made. Otherwise you are just showing off that you drew something for 3 days in a row.

Hmmm. Yeah, I can see what you mean. I like how the pauldron/pant leg/hat/scarf sit better on the left. Though I feel like the anatomy/line quality/fluidity/proportions have improved much more on the right as well. > I feel like the anatomy/line quality/fluidity/proportions have improved
Indeed.

It's not uncommon to make major gains and then lose some appeal in the process (it happens to the best of us). In your case it's not even a big deal, there's just a few things about shapes that you should take note of: in the left picture the pant has a more interesting asymmetric shape, while in the right one it has more of a saggy potato sack look. You've also shied away from using sharp edges; the drapery in the right picture looks better but in rounding it out so much its lost some visual interest. All minor stuff so don't sweat it.

>> No.6179034

>>6179015
Cool, I really appreciate you extrapolating that for me. This helps a lot. I never care when people tell me something needs work, I get anxiety about it when people say that, but then don't tell me *why* it's not working well.

>> No.6179092

>>6179034
also figured i would offer crit. The shapes of the original scarf around the neck in particular are much more interesting, and the overlap of the midsection and arms adds some depth where it's lacking in the other piece. I also think the boots are slightly better in the first one. The left one looks a bit more grounded and appears to have more weight put on it, and the boot going up the (our right) leg reaching a bit past the calf results in more visually interesting asymmetry imo

Overall good improvement, but I do like some of the stylistic and shape choices in the original as other anons have pointed out

if you asking how many hours did i put in then i'll say i draw ~2 hours a day everyday
Sometimes it's more like for example those 3 girls on the right took me 4 hours each and i was drawing them these past 3 days
sometimes i can go as far as 12 hours day depending on how i feel about the piece i'm making
Of course there were times when i could drop drawing for some time and if i put that account i'll say i draw for ~3 years everyday
I have 6-7 full sketchbooks and ~70-100 pieces in digital

If you asking about what i did then nothing specific
Just your standard proko/hampton/loomis and a bunch of other random courses and of course master studies
My learning process is pure chaos since i never had any mentors

>> No.6179146

>>6179140
Thanks for the insight. I wondered about the hours, since I want to take my practice to the next level and I feel 2 hours a day doesn't cut it. Alas, there's nothing on which I could cut back. I could prioritize drawing over the other thing I am doing, or ask my job to reduce my waging to an 80% position or something. Probably I'll just have to cut back on the other thing and free up the weekends. Good to see, though, that 2 hours daily yield results eventually.

composition? style?
i genuinely didnt expect this critique because its so... subjective? i agree, art must be appealing but i cant judge/know what someone finds appealing. isnt 'taste' entirely subjective?

hands need work, but the higher hand of jack-o shows some promise in terms of giner shapes (although the fingers are a little too long, keep grinding) so nbd.

perspective and proportions are probably your biggest area of needed improvement. jack-o's neck is very awkward, as are her hips and the relation to her midsection.

work on construction and breaking down the figure into stuff like box forms in space to see how they should overlap and relate to one another. your work actually has very nice appeal and shape language, and a lot of the individual parts are very well done. Tohru's legs and anatomy in general are really good. It's mostly just fitting those doll-like parts together that needs practice. At the moment they're a bit disjointed and thus the overall form looks off.

Very good improvement anon, esp from your starting point. Most of all, I can tell you have good taste and your art has appeal as a consequence. Your facial features are really nice in particular. I can see you becoming a really great artist with time and effort.

The problem I had with a lot of stupid questions on /ic/, is that many will talk endlessly but never had anything to show for it, as if they didn't even bother to put pen to paper at all. To talk about improving drawing skill in nearly complete abstract like that, you couldn't really provide type of critique that is specific enough to be useful. In the spirit of OP's post, I'll point out improvement over an insignificant time frame. Left is yesterday, right is today.
Two things I've learned in 24 hours:
I really liked yesterday's picture, but compared to today's, it looks like shit too me now (how bad will today's look tomorrow?)

Also, my phone camera makes it look worse than it is. It's not just because the lens is dirty and scratched, I also think it vertically flattens the image, but it could be my inability to hold the camera perpendicular. In any event, they both look slightly better in person, but not much.

Very little, as I said, I did the outline very thick and just dragged the graphite around. I did scribble a few places like the cheekbones and eye sockets. What I learned from the one on the left is that less is more and I ended up erasing a lot yesterday. Before June I didn't even know blending pencil was a thing.

Long story short, I quit cigarettes, weed, energy drinks, booze, and the diet pills I had been abusing for years two months ago, so drawing and obsessing about art is keeping me sane. I'm actually almost mentally okay now!

I don’t know what is your problem and other anons, maybe it really is autism. To improve your skills it is enough to spend an hour a day: copy anime pictures for half an hour, 3 minutes for one pic, and do the same with photos for another half an hour. A week later, you will have 140 sketches, an understanding of proportions and the ability to draw something at an acceptable level. Sure you wont become a pro but your skill will increase.

I think you're overthinking things a bit. There's no need to break out a ruler; it's not that empirical. Draw a circle. Draw an oval that tapers at the bottom using that circle. Draw a vertical line cutting that oval in half. Then draw a horizontal line cutting the oval into equal quarters. The horizontal line is your eye line. The nose is halfway between the bottom of the oval and the eye line. The mouth is halfway between the nose and the bottom of the oval. Your face starts too high on the head, which is what leads to that big chin. Just focus on practising the basic form of the head without detail until you get it down.

my friend I think your problem is with your eye rather than your skill. you need to put your art against your heroes' art and reflect why theirs look better. "where do they put more detail? what part is left simple?", "where do they use straight lines over curves or vice-versa?", etc
one consistent thing that bothers me on your work though is the eye curvature. you tend to make the outer corner too low compared to the inner one which in turn skews the perspective. in a front shot with no angle, the outer corner is just slightly higher than the inner. having it too low implies the head is rotating upward and discordant perspectives on the features is what fucks up the face. please make an effort to see the face in perspective

there isn't shame in tracing for practice, but you should try to develop/gather a system from which you can grab from your imagination and put it down on paper with good results. This is obviously tracing, I know because I have experience.

Nice one mate, you'll get better with the facial expressions, not that bad for starters though. Try to emulate different expressions based on dragon ball z and marvel comics (example: Lobo/x-men), those ones are good to try to emulate due to the fact that are different drawing styles. Now this being said, if eventually you find yourself like "shit, I cannot draw like this...", you can always print a nice (black and white) drawing (DB z, for example), put a blank paper over it and try to draw over the lines you see from the draw under that blank page. And by using this method maybe you'll get used to that drawing style. Another tip: draw the same figure (anime/comic character body or face) 3 times per day, dont try to take it too seriously, just naturally draw it 3 times, do the best you can. The next day draw the same figure, you will notice that you will be getting wayyyy better than you'll expect :) sometimes people try to draw different things one after the other (which is not that bad at all, but), sometimes it's good to draw the same exact thing for a while so you can get really better at it ;)

I bet by the look of your designs you'll take that as a compliment, but take my word that it's not
you seem so far separated from your art that you have 0 drive to improve. just drawing because you can.

In regards to colour and rendering, I looked at a lot of courses on schoolism a while back, mostly Craig Mullins and Tom Fluharty come to mind. From there I've been apeing off as much as I can from kuroboshi kouhaku, takehito harada, hidari (left side), and ainy's work.
