If you are a /beginner or /int/ermediate in art, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice.
Use this thread instead of making new threads or post in the drawthread with fundamental exercises.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS using one of the following methods:
1. screenshot the image and post that instead
2. change camera capture settings to something smaller
3. send to computer and resize in MSPaint

Sticky:

Old: http://www.squidoo.com/how-to-draw-learn

New collaborative sticky (anyone can edit): https://hackmd.io/UMnZVhNITW-T2wZpHw6d0Q

RECOMMENDED BOOKS FOR BEGINNERS:
- The Art and Science of Drawing
- Perspective Drawing Handbook
- Figure - Design and invention
- Pen and Ink
- The Natural Way To Draw

TRY TO BE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK.
When giving feedback, avoid vague "advice" - point what's wrong and try to give the anon you're quoting a clear direction to improve their art (study heads < watch THIS VIDEO about head structure, read THIS SECTION of THIS ARTIST'S BOOK, etc).
You, feedback seeking anon, should also try to be clear and concise when asking for critique/help. When posting your artwork, say what you want help with, and what's your goal with the study/artwork.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a3uxMdokX68

REMINDER TO IGNORE POSTS VIOLATING RULE 1
"All images and discussion should pertain to the critique of visual artwork."
(ex art dumps, posts without text, posters that don't ask questions or seek help)

You're not supposed to draw that, you're supposed to read it so you can gain an understanding of perspective and foreshortening. Sure, you could minutiously and calmly try to copy whatever is on that page but it's just a technical illustration and you won't gain much from it.

You need to get yourself the Vilppu Drawing Manual or How to Draw Comics the Marvel Way. Personally I couldn't get into the Marvel one. I loved copying Vilppu's drawings though, I personally believe it's the best drawing manual to get started after you gain some line confidence. Try both and see what works for you.

>>6175933
A good curriculum for most beginners is:
>Drawing Basics playlist
[YouTube] How to Hold and Control Your Pencil (embed)
Go through all the videos and do the Eviston exercises seriously at the end of the videos if there are any. This playlist is more to get an understanding of drawing as whole, how to hold a pen, how perspective and foreshortening work, what are values, what are common mistakes etc.

>Drawabox Lessons 0-2
https://drawabox.com/lessons
Do lessons 0 to 2 of Drawabox. Take your time, don't erase, this is where you start drawing for real. Focus on your line making and accuracy.

>The Vilppu Drawing Manual
https://archive.org/details/the-vilppu-drawing-manual-pdoc
Go through the manual and copy Vilppu's drawings. Take your time, measure, don't copy 1 to 1 but inspire yourself and stay close to the spirit.

>Draw every single day
Copy drawings, objects, figures you like, try drawing on your own without reference. You can't draw a line if you've never drawn it before. It's like when you arrive in a new city you can't expect to know every street if you've never been there before, but after a while of exploring the city you will know the streets and what they have in them and where they lead.

TAKE YOUR TIME, drawing takes time, drawing takes repetition, it's a grind. Take it slow, focus on accuracy and penmanship.

It's structured, easy to follow and gives you exercises. Most people won't do it though and they'll meander around #nodrawing all day, month, year.

I'm trying to improve my painting skills, but I'm not sure how to approach it. I'm not sure if my biggest problem is that I'm getting slack on the details or if my process is just sloppy. Maybe I was just making too much shit up as I went along. Could also be weak values.

Any opinions on where I should focus my efforts?

Studying texture would do you well, anon, the nut and leaves could be a lot more convincing.

You realize Drawabox guy is just ripping off Peter Han and Scott Robertson, right? The guy can't even demonstrate his own exercises without relying on shift-clicking in photoshop.

I like to actually see what the instructor is doing with the pencil to get an idea of their drawing process. That's what makes Brent Eviston a good video instructor. As for perspective exercises with basic volumes, the Vandruff lectures are also much better than drawabox, even if they're rough around the edges.

Also the whole "rotating the page" business is questionable advice. I can understand it's purpose in Scott Robertson's book because mechanical design requires precision, but for the average artist, it's better to just get used to drawing lines at different angles on a static page. Just use overhand grip and draw lightly.

Yes? But their books and lessons aren't freely available. You don't need to follow the dude's advice or do the 250 box crap. Just do the exercises because they're decent, direct and guided for line quality, to get an eye for perspective and they actually get you to draw. Simple as.

Look at her forehead. It looks as if the hair is just sitting on top of a bald head because of this line since it follows the shape of the face exactly.
Her hair also goes a bit too far in the air. Basically pull down the whole hair shape and have it go over her face or not follow the shape of the face directly.

study your coloring and rendering with some special attention on the color choices and adding hue variation cuz right now it looks flat and digital

also work on the values, if you turn the image into black/white it turns into mostly the same tones of grey with little variation

even if you ignore the coloring/rendering part of my advice, at least just improving the values would make it 10x better

Except you're very clearly an illiterate moron.

One of the most common pieces of advice pros give is to get a drawing board and make sure the paper is perpendicular to your line of sight. This helps significantly with drawing from reference, because if the paper is lying flat on the table, the view of your reference will be at a completely different angle to the paper, which can lead to distortion. On top of this, it's not intuitive to rotate paper on a drawing board, especially with several sheets layered on top of each other for the soft texture.

Rotating the page is a mechanical drawing technique. Nobody should need it for drawing basic shapes like ellipses and cubes, which is what drawabox man insists on.

This is day 4 of
>I've never drawn before but want to git gud at drawing anime girls

Days 1&2 I was just kind of copying drawings and that was okay but I felt a little bit like it was cheating to copy things line-for-line, so on day 3 I did a couple of quick-ish poses some from memory and then I started sketching vinyl anime figures because I figured that would be a bit better since they look close enough to 2d and I can't just copy them exactly.
The things I note other than just my line work being bad:
>Feet too small and kinda weird angles
>Hand is creepy
>that big think hair strand that looks like a tentacle
>the hair strands in general don't have quite enough structure in the big flowy part
>Face is a little derpy, and should be looking more off to the left
I haven't really worked on any one specific thing at all yet, can pretty much improve by practicing anything.

I know I'm /beg/ as hell and I messed up a bunch of this. But does this "shot" I guess for lack of a word, or maybe composition look balanced and good? Or is it too crowded? Even if I don't yet have the skills to make good art with it.

This has sovl, your shapes are pretty consistent and fun. Don't overthink composition and just feel it out. So long as the image is clear and your lines don't intersect in a confusing way then it's probably fine even with mistakes. Perfection is overrated and all that.

Was gonna try copying these perspective examples from Fun With a Pencil, but the section's kicking my ass already. Maybe I'm more tired than I thought from work, but there's a lot I don't really get:

What exactly is being measured with the measuring points?

Why does Loomis bother measuring the sides of the house with X's when they're all different sizes? Does the center of the X need to be at the same height above the horizon line or something?

In single point perspective, is the "optional rectangle of first space" just a box at the vanishing point for measuring or something? If so, can the box be however big I want it, or is there an arbitrary size it needs to be?

TL; DR question: Is there a book or other resource that'll ease me into perspective better or help me understand what Loomis is describing? Because it does seem like he expects us to have a decent grasp of perspective already.

Doing Erik Olson's perspective course right now. Can someone explain why we use 60 degrees and 45 degrees respectively? Like why exactly those angles? I assume it's because our eyes are not directly on the side of our head, but rather facing forward. This causes us not see the picture plane in a full 180 degrees, but rather half of it, which is 90 degrees. This then causes the vanishing point to be 90 degrees as the objects vanishes to the point. But where does the 60 (half of 30) come from?

I dont know that course but i assume its the same stuff as with all related to learning: its easier to teach on CONCRETE example instead in variables. Aka if you show example of cube tilted by 60 degrees you easily showcase the sides are half their usual length instead of pulling out tangent functions and saying Y = cos(x)

Well, in my case what happened was I was using a Surface Pro pen which broke after I used a grip specified by a paid digital drawing course. I kept using the pen with a hard grip then eventually got carpal tunnel. Something like pic related (not my finger).
The mystery though is that my left hand has similar symptoms, so I fear it could have been the vaccine that caused it but I'm not sure.

I don't mean that you can't do these things. But the people who are good at art didn't fuck around. Art is not just theory, it's practice. There's a lot of nuance you can discuss and get into the weeds about, but none of it fucking matters if you aren't actively making stuff on a regular basis (read: everyday). Your time is your life. You're doing fine, but you really should learn the fundamentals of linear perspective before attempting any Loomis book. The guy even says this himself.

Consider picking up Perspective Drawing Handbook by Joseph D'Amelio at some point.

Okay. I pulled out the copy of Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain that I stole from my sister 12 years ago and never actually did any work from.
Here are the first 3 exercises/starting-points.
I didn't do a self-portrait because I hate myself, see >>6178132 So I drew somebody from a picture instead points (to me of course) if you can guess who. The person from memory is comically bad, it's supposed to be Lena but yikes, it looks like if one of the three musketeers had FAS.
And then obviously my hand.
I spent too much time of the hour-and-a-bit on the portrait so to be fair I rushed the portrait from memory but it wasn't going to be much better in any case. I'm going to try not to just excessively study the Lena photo to try and cheat at doing better next time.

i'm building up a portfolio for concept art and i'm filling a character design section with fighting game characters concepts (going for those "Extra" character designs with lots of ornaments and exaggeration). This is my second one, some kind of plant wizard (the venus is placeholder, i know it sucks ass), and i feel like it looks "Unprofessional" but can't wrap my head around the reason. Hasty linework? Not enough detail? Poor detail distribution? Bad shading? Dull colors? I feel like the design itself works but something's bothering me

too many things going on, you can't deduce anything about who your character is or what his personality might be

compare it to Ryu and Ken
you can tell from a glance that:
> both train some form of Karate
> both are physically fit
> Ryu is stoic while Ken is cocky
> they're most likely not evil

I was going for a design with lots of useless ornaments and no particular regard for function, since they're pretty fun to draw (the other 2 parts of the portfolio will have more realistic, functional designs)
Character idea is a plant wizard that charges up by hitting opponents with his vines and uses sun bursts or plant attacks or something like that with his magic arm, but i can see i may have gotten to carried away with it being Kool.
Probably the plant/garden-themed parts contrast with the "Captain" look of the jacket and beard?
Okok i realized it sucks dick if i want to go pro. I'll change it around to be more consistent. I'll probably keep the palette

At least you're able to talk through the concept behind your work. It shows that you've put some thought into it. With that said, I don't think the design and concept match up. The character is a "plant wizard," but there's too little of either in the design. When I think of wizards, I think of robes, long white beards, a staff or a magic wand, maybe a spell book, which the character has none. On the plant side, you've got a vine wrapped around one arm, the venus flytrap thing, and the green arm. You could remove all of these things, and it would not significantly alter the design from a visual standpoint. The plant motif should be more "baked in" to the design, really sell the hybrid idea of a half-plant/half-man. Just food for thought.

Yeah as I thought, your drawing is stiff compare to the ref. Your perspective is off compare to the ref, the butt is closer to the viewer in the ref so you would need to draw it a little bigger in your drawing. Your clothes is also stiff as well, the skirt should be longer and the top doesn't work like that(no suction to the breast but more like a tent)
