Is there anything more pathetic than an artist quitting because they don’t get enough likes or other form of approval?

Who cares about likes. It's all about that passive income.

no, an artist should draw only because they find it enjoyable, not because they want approval

I have never quit because no one likes my art, but all I will say is the feeling of having even one person who goes "this looks great!!!" and likes my post on twitter is something unmatched.

Motivation is key
It doesn't matter how you get it so long as you do
If the thing that motivates you to draw is public praise then you'd better fucking find people to praise you

you need to seperate learning from personal art.
THIS is the key
If you can clearly think that this piece of fucking shit you made is just you learning, its far less damaging to motivation than every single personal piece looks like shit WHY CANT I DO THIS RIGHT.

just separate learning from your personal stuff, in fact, don't even do personal shit till you are kind of ok with the learning shit.

"Discipline" just teaches you to go through the motions without a drive to improve. It's the same shit as most the people on DaD.

I follow some guy on twitter who goes on about how his shit is not getting the recognition it deserves, constant self pitying, saying how they are losing followers... it's really pathetic. I think it's someone from this board, not gonna say who it is but holy shit get your shit toguether, the reason you don't get recognition is that your art still sucks, buckle down and practice to get better, holy shit. You know who you are.

>the reason you don't get recognition is that your art still sucks
Wrong. The bar is too high nowadays, so by the point you get "recognition", you are already at pro level (or have wasted a shitton of time playing the marketing game).
However, compelling art need not be pro level, there are lots of artists with interesting art that fall through the cracks because of that.

That said, statistically speaking, the complaining guy you're talking about is probably not deserving of recognition.

She's kind of right though, I'm low /beg/, 99.99% of what I draw sucks, the rest are studies I got lucky on, and when I draw every day I'm faced with a constant stream of mediocrity reminding me how bad I am.

So far I've been coping but I guess it couldn't hurt to just take a day off and go touch grass every now and then

thats where knowing a bit of networkinng and marketing helps a lot, most artists think all they need is make skillful artwork and the rest sorts itself out but nah, if you want to make art your business/job you have to learn the skills of a business

ofcourse if drawing is just for pure fun and hobby then do wtv the fuck you want

you shouldnt draw everyday, because it gets fucking tedious and you will start to hate drawing
picking up a pencil will make you sick

unless you scribble for like 15 minutes and call it a day
then sure, draw everyday

I'm pretty sure most people who do art professionally put in similar hours to any other profession. Like, maybe not literally eight hours a day, five days a week, but something comparable to that.
If it's your job, you gotta do it even if you don't feel like it. That's what >>6171224 meant with discipline.

>setting EA standards for animation
yeah, thats why they constantly kill themselves
i would be careful with adopting anything from asian standards and practices

creative professions are not the same as regular labour
there were not only studies, but also practical tests where companies would reduce working hours in the office
it resulted in productiveness of employees rising, so they put in less working hours and still did the same amount of work, or even exceeded it
ofc the same wont work for builders or factory workers, obviously, because their amount of productiveness depends solely in the working hours put in

drawing falls into the first category of work
dont lump it in all together
mindless discipline will only hurts you

ive grinded my fair share of drawing years ago too
during summer vacation when i was preparing for my entry exams i went on a bit of a training session
2 weeks, 8 hours a day of drawing, excluding saturdays
i couldnt look at paper and pencils after that
i didnt draw for a month, up till the exams, because i was so sick of it
passed everything at the first try, but it still sucked
was forcing myself to draw during uni too, because deadlines, discipline etc
and now i didnt draw for years
did only few pieces that i enjoyed and they were mostly for work too
now i try to get back into drawing, because there are many things i want to draw, but its not easy to force myself again
im just burnt out
i dont wonder why so many manga go on hiatus as time passes
forcing yourself is stupid

Deadlines are real, though. Would you actually have made it through university if you only worked when you felt like it?
It's easy to say that you shouldn't force yourself to do things, but the harsh economic reality of the adult world is that sometimes you gotta.
Unless you live in some kind of post-scarcity socialist utopia and are only drawing for your own enjoyment. I mean, I kinda do. But most people aren't in that position.
