why do my values look cartoony?
im not using a lot of values, they arent far away from one another. im clearly dividing my shadow and light areas. what am i doing wrong?

having a wide range of values is a good thing, isnt it?

If it were the only subject in the painting it could probably have a wider range but supposed to be a dark shape. I didn't post the whole painting because it's very unfinished I wanted to get help before I move on.

I am doing what they suggested in this new painting. I sketched a composition before painting, grouped values, kept them distinct. Just getting frustrated I guess. I'll come back when it's finished hopefully I can work it out. Really trying just frustrating.

You're usingmidtones when you're supposed to use brighter values, and refusing to use darker values in your shadows. Make a clear distinction and make sure yo don't muddle your brighter valuer by making unnecessary strokes.

without the contrast adjustment.
which is preferable?

>they arent far away from one another.
and thats the problem, your img is pure midtone, only no real contrast of lights and darks

>> No.6166900

>>6166850
Ttake this one and just paint in manually more contrast in values

you already got a good base of midtone now just add in some ambient occlusion darkest darks

dude bottom left needs more lights, the dog is a little of both ambient occlusion and highlights
the dude in middle needs the ambient occlusion/darker darks only same with the dude in the right

Maybe your right. I'll go darker in the shadows and see how that works out. I was avoiding going too dark because I didn't want to steal focus from the focal point but as it is it just doesn't look right so I'll go darker on the shadows

Anon made the brights brighter, the shadows darker, and added a smidgen of color to the monsters. I think it would've looked best if he didn't brighten the monsters so much, but then again I'm the one typing not painting.

Brother I color picked the brightest and darkest parts of your picture.
Here you go, this isn't magic or rocket science, the value range you are using is very small, you are not even using HALF of the total value range that is available to you.

The greater the range of values you can effectively use the better you can display the shape and form and the better your picture will look.

And here I just barely added a bit of darker darks and lighter greys and it already looks sharper.

I think he intentionally constrained the values in that area to avoid conflicting with the focal point. He decided to flat out choose dark grays with little contrast, kind of like suppressing it, sadly it didn't work well.
Also this >>6167779
This is the /ic/ tier harsh criticism that can actually be useful. I was doubtful about the composition as well, thought the values can save it.

Just keep at it OP, post in the general threads next time.

I see I see. If that is the goal then OP needs to distribute the values he used more evenly along the value scale and balance it. Having just a handful dark values will just make things blurred.

yeah the composition is really bad i see that now that ive put so much time into it. i watched a really good video from the comic book guy david finch that helped me think about composition in a better more broad idea and since that video ive realized how bad of a composition it is...but ill finish it. the next ones composition will be better i think. thank you

You should consider thumbnails and value maps before going hard into rendering a piece. There’s no real eyepath for this composition.

honestly, if you were in my position, would you fix this painting or would you start another. the more i look, the more i see wrong. the pose, the composition, the foreground monster.

if you were painting this what would you do, continue or start a new painting? regardless, i have a learned a lot and want to thank everybody for helping me.

If it’s for a client, fix it. If it’s just personal work, move on. If I had the luxury of time with the client I would move on as well and come back to it. Coming back to a piece you’ll usually come back stronger. It’s why most pros have multiple projects concurrently. Kind of like how you group a bunch of cocks in your mouth.

Thanks for the honesty. I think your right. I feel like fixing it would probably take just as long as doing at least 80 percent of another painting. I learned a lot, I think this painting had served a good purpose.

Lean into it. People think their weakness is their biggest mistake or glaring mistake. You lean into it and make your weakness your strength. Make it hyper cartoony. Push yourself to the max. Overreach. Over extend. Push the boundaries. Listen to the gods and the muses. You can make it.

Completely square paintings like this tend to look like shit as well. Its like the painting itself is nice, the elements are there, but the composition is weird, too compact and just random. Why the guy screaming at the front? why the square canvas?
