To be fair, as a kid my drawings were mainly shitty Pokémon and then later came realistic cats and Giger pastiches.
Definitely looked like the "probably going to commit serial murder" type in school though. Once I got out of school I became a happier person because school never was the place for me. Now I'm living a happy live surrounded by thousands of books and drawing almost every day.

No, but my parents don’t care. They get actively annoyed when I show them my art of tell them in drawing. They’ve always hated the hobby. Even now that I’m college studying something they approve of and in a long term relationship with someone they like, they still don’t like that I draw.

I am. I’ve never in my life had the urge to show someone, even though it’s all completely sfw and it’s always going well. I’d show anyone who asked irl, but no one does because they feel like it’s private to me, because I never actively seek an audience. It isn’t, showing it just feels meaningless.
No one hears my music, either. I’ve always played a few instruments, and sang competitively in a big way, but on my own I’d never play nor sing where anyone could hear. same result, but unlike with art it’s too intimate to me, and my family are..it’d be impossible. i like to keep things to myself.

just came to say that op, seeing your thread and answering, i resolved to fix this, and just went and showed all the stuff i’ve worked on (i’m a sfw) in the past few months to my family, and updated them on everything i was doing. it felt like a relief, getting it all off my chest, and i could almost see them visibly relaxing and feeling hugely better too, after finally seeing that i’ve really been making amazing progress and working hard all this time, not just uncertainly locked up in my room, without showing my face while partying or playing around. the air’s now clear, transparency’s restored, and everyone knows i’ve been using my time practically, getting good results, and’ve been doing well. thanks, op, for the push.

If you live in the US then you probably can't. A while ago, I forget exactly when, the IRS had some new role at it that if you received more than $600 in any money transfer method (PayPal, cash app , Venmo, etc), then that as income and that counts towards your taxes. You can probably get around this by accepting crypto and then cashing out via exchanges that don't require ids. However that is becoming very difficult to do since most exchanges have KYC practices in place.

It's just the expectation males have to live with in my culture.

On average somewhere between $25-40 per commission. Had to stop for a minute due to real life stuff, but I'm preparing for a return by drawing some more content in the meantime. I'm also working on a personal comic project at the same time.

Yes. On the account that my asian parents only care about their son being a productive member of the society, and making big money from a prestige job and all that, you get the picture. My dad's been a physical laborer all his life and he resents all kinds of artists, saying they are just a bunch of arrogant snobs. Which is not wrong, since he used to be made fun of by his "artist" friends (who never actually made art in the first place, just played with the guitars and lived on their parents money), for not enjoying life enough and such bohemian bullshit. Long story short, I told them my drawing tablet is for practicing calligraphy as a hobby, and never even slipped a hint that I'm interested in art, even though I'd never trade my love for writing and drawing for anything else.
