IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER OR /INT/ERMEDIATE IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice.
Use this thread instead of making new threads or post in the drawthread with fundamental exercises.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS using one of the following methods:
1. screenshot the image and post that instead
2. change camera capture settings to something smaller
3. send to computer and resize in MSPaint

READ THE STICKY:
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1uwaXKU7ev6Tw_or__o8ARpUb6r2rCZYJGqwSFV9AD98/edit#bookmark=id.15jx3pyuimvj

RECOMMENDED BOOKS FOR BEGINNERS:
- Keys to drawing
- Perspective made easy
- Figure - Design and invention
- Pen and Ink

TRY TO BE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK.
When giving feedback, avoid vague "advice" - point what's wrong and try to give the anon you're quoting a clear direction to improve their art (study heads < watch THIS VIDEO about head structure, read THIS SECTION of THIS ARTIST'S BOOK, etc).
You, feedback seeking anon, should also try to be clear and concise when asking for critique/help. When posting your artwork, say what you want help with, and what's your goal with the study/artwork.

I'm about to go on a trip to the country with little to no internet. I'd like a drawing book to take with me; what's the best drawing book for a beginner? Assume zero fundamentals. Preferably something less boring then just "drawing cubes all day" but I'll take anything other then "fun with a pencil" because I already have that one.

1-point: when not viewing at an angle and the object has no rotation (0/90 degrees)
2-point: when not viewing at an angle and the object has rotation
3-point: when viewing at an angle (looking upwards or downwards)
4/5-point: when you want to incorporate the entire view instead of just a ~60 degree cone
1/2 is just 3-point with VPs being infinitely far away.

Is there an equation for shifting the vanishing points when rotating an object? My best guess is using tangent in some way (ex. at 90 degrees, VP1 is directly in front of the object and VP2 is infinitely far away, at 45 degrees both VPs are equally far left and right of the object).

2 point, one directly in front of the pov and one directly behind, and things like lines on cubes are purely human perception; only curves between those two points are actually visually relevant. You are never, ever going to draw like that, so don't even try. The whole point of point perspectives (no pun intended) is to make a "close enough" shorthand that's easier to work with/conceptualise for different real-life scenarios.

That looks really badass, though. Without a reference to compare it too nothing about the lighting stands out as bad or incorrect, it's just a very cool landscape. With noisy subjects without consistent morphology like mountains, the fine details only matter if they're highly iconic (eg Everest or the Grand Tetons), because the shadows define the form rather than being subject to it. All that matters is that you get in the kinds of shapes you want, eg in this case a lot of sharp-but-rough narrow vertical slabs that interlock to form the impression of towering rock faces, and dappled low-saturation areas of varying opacity with soft edges to evoke clouds. As for colours, you have warm direct light and cold indirect light, which is about what you'd expect on a slightly overcast day with direct sunlight hitting the sunward edifice of the mountains.

If you just want to match the ref, apart from looking at the dark lines/spots in the shaded area for a rougher texture, try looking at the thumbnail for how to alter the colours/values. Your shadows appear to be indirectly lit by a blue sky, but in the photo it's a combination of a clouded sky and reflected light from similarly-coloured mountains, making overall slightly warm shadows (on a warm-coloured surface).

Incidentally, I actually got a job offer there a couple weeks ago. Don't want to work in Utah in August though so I'm looking at jobs farther north.

Sorry for the delay. Yeah if you want a book I guess Scott Robertson's How To Draw is your go to, it covers a lot (I will say my gripe with it is that it doesn't have enough mathematical proof, it's a bit light in that regard. It's more of a pragmatic read about perspective and applying it to enveyorments and such). If you want a video course i heard Marshall and Olson are pretty nice. (but I haven't done either myself, as of now). Personally I'm still looking for a more mathematical resource myself, but in the meantime there are a lot of tools to help you figure it out in Blender.
Anyways, what I was going to say about vanishing points:
In picrel, to get the 2 vanishing points of the 2 sets of lines we simply draw a line from the camera paralel to them, and intersect it with the picture plane. Thus if the two sets of lines form a 90 degree angle, so would these two lines to the vanishing points. All that is left is to construct our cube based on said points. Things change when we into consideration that the camera has variable focal length, thus changing the angle of the lines depending on the focal length, resulting in distorted perspective. Sadly this is a more complicated topic and my optics knowledge is rusty as fuck, perhaps some in depth photography resources would aid in this.

>> No.6165210

>>6165201
Ye, the only thing you don't need to deal with is aperture. If you click on the camera you can go down to the camera settings on the side window and enable dof, change focal lengths, etc. In the live view it's in the top right corner of the window. Good luck, 3d is really fun anon, hope this small step inspires you to do more with it. I'd recommend trying to just setup a simple room, a great exercise in learning spacing and camera fundies.

>fully aware that there will always be someone else stronger than me and genuinely don't care about it
>even if my 1RM falls by 40-50lbs I still feel joy and pride in the self improvement as I climb my way back up and learn new ways to improve my lifts
>artist mindset
>constant frustration at not being able to grasp concepts no matter how hard I study
>don't care about other artists being better than me, moreso resentful that a lot of them just have a higher aptitude for this stuff and progress a lot more quickly than I do
>also extremely angry at myself for wasting so much time not trying harder to learn and taking super long breaks in between learning instead
>feel extremely stupid as well for not progressing at the rate I want to and it takes an immense effort to sit down and force myself to practice
>feels like I'll never be at the skill level I want to be at in order to achieve my long term goals which further hinders my desire to keep grinding

Well, we're talking about an imaginary creature. One possible reason why you may think the ribcage is too large is that the hips are too small. It makes the torso appear to be longer than it is. Give the figure bigger hips and see how that works.

Just like most things, I'd start with big to small. For example, the wood, it has small bits broken off, dents, grooves, general wear and tear right? So from there, you can take cues from the shape you already have then work those details in. Here's a ref I found, I thought of Spice and Wolf for some reason when looking at your pic and it seems like all the rustic elements are there to help get you started. Take note of the trees and wooden posts, you're pretty much doing the same lighting up your fence, just on a smaller scale!

https://youtu.be/pmdc2zQ9jvM
I'm also not the biggest enviro guy, but I think this can help elucidate shortcuts, mainly custom brushes for shrubbery and grasses and whatnot so you don't have to do it manually.

Basically, it's just simply making a "thing" machine out of boxes, spheres, cylinders and distorted versions of each. Each part needs to be overlapping or be connected to something else. It's not that she's too thick as long as that was your intention. But if not and you were going for accuracy then yes. Before diving too deep into anatomy I would recommend trying measuring techniques like sight sizing or a grid method, you probably don't need to stick with it too long but it'll help you build observation and accuracy skills that you're currently lacking on

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C87ZXHPQkh0&t=300s
I understand that it takes time but I feel like I'm not doing it correctly and I'm that I'm not learning how to do this exercise properly, like I can't seem to properly shade it correctly.
Should I just stop doing this exercise until I have learn to shade effectively or should I just keep doing this exercise but not do the shading?

Ok this one looks too shitty so here's another one I did yesterday.
But yeah I still feel kind of confused on where the shadows are supposed to go when I'm twisting the ribbion and how the transition from hard to soft should go.
I feel like I should stop doing this until I get at least a beginner understanding on rendering and how that affects shapes and to not start any bad habits when it comes to that.

That's what makes it hard to crit true /beg/ work too. Means focus on fundamentals. Just find a list and go down it from the top. Is your linework (if drawing) or brushwork (if painting) up to snuff? ie, can you control what kind of mark you make, where the mark goes and its shape (curve, angle, etc)? If not that's the first thing to grind. There's an excercise that gets bounced around in a lot of sources for training line control (not sure about brush control, I only very recently became interested in painting personally) but Peter Han's course in the sticky (check the OP) starts out with this very exercise. After that do value studies (assuming you don't want to do plain lineart forever) and so on.

Work through some books, too. The stuff in the OP of the "artbook thread" is actually mostly scans of drawing manuals, not artbooks, and stuff like Keys to Drawing or Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain (which I think is very overrated but it will at least drill in the one very important skill of observational drawing, which will make you better at studies, which in turn will make you better at learning from studies; also just completely ignore the chapter on colour theory if you read an edition that has it). These books are set up in a structured way so that you just work from the exercises from start to finish. Think of it like schoolwork: There's a good chance you already know some of the stuff in the book, but work through that stuff anyway. If you don't there's a chance there will be something in there you're meant to learn that you won't learn, and you'll get lost later. At least when going over stuff you already know it should be easier.

Why are you drawing hairbraids instead of arms, is this a weird new fetish? Also the gesture is wrong so start with that (that'll also keep you from going off the edge of your paper/canvas) and instead of trying to draw the muscle groups you've learned from wherever draw what you actually see in the picture (which you should be better at perceiving because of the muscle groups you presumably know, since you're exaggerating them on the legs and presumably drawing them, albeit too short because you wanted to fit them and ran out of room on your paper, with no skin on the arms).

Also maybe drawing her thicc is a style choice and you're just using the reference for the pose and not doing a study or whatever, but that is a VERY thin model and you drew her huge, especially from the waist down. But doing that is also throwing your pose off, because you're trying for example to put meat on her hips (bringing her thigh muscle up/hipbones down) but doing that is making you miss the length and the angle of the pelvis. Note even on fat or muscular people the hipbone is pretty high, and it's the meat of the torso, not the pelvis, that tends to make it less distinct, because the hip joints are still always going to be way below the hipbones. That leg flesh only gets pushed upward when the knee is brought upward.

Yes and not in the least because you have to do it that way to have access to useful layer blending modes like multiply, add, burn, dodge or hard light. You can make those brush properties instead but that's slightly more technical and FAR harder to work with on a single layer from a practical perspective (as each brushstroke will amplify the effects of a previous overlapping brushstroke), and there's really no reason to force yourself to work that way. Only reason to work on a single layer for rendering is if you're either trying to copy the "feel" of traditional painting (and strictly using raster brushes), or you're adjusting someone else's work that was saved as a PNG so it's easier to suck it up and carefully futz with raster brushes (for example colourpicking their shading tones) than to try using layer blending modes (and even then it's good practice to work on a second layer so you can manipulate your own brushstrokes without messing with the underlying image).

I usually operate with 4-6 layers. One is for lines, sometimes one that I turn off is a sketch layer (I don't sketch and ink, but I'll draw things in on the "sketch" layer to experiment and then cut and paste them to the main lineart layer), one is for flat colours, then one is for highlights and one is for shading (some of which I usually also do on the flats layer for fine-tuning), and lastly I sometimes do a separate background layer. The ones I always have are lines, flats, highlights and shadows. OCCASIONALLY I'll experiment with combining other layer blending modes, but it's not part of my usual workflow. Highlights and shadow layers are readily identifiable because they use different layer blending modes, which are labeled automatically, and it's easy to tell lineart from flats because the thumbnail for flats is a block of colour while the thumbnail for lines is mostly transparency, while the sketch layer is turned off unless I'm actively using it.

For your same rationale I don't do shit like >>6166188 which is completely unnecessary and makes you end up with like a dozen if not more raster layers for individual objects in the scene that could all be on one layer with no additional inconvenience except in the unusual circumstance that you want to individually manipulate HSV on a single object or something, in which case the inconvenience of lassoing the object is much less than the inconvenience of dealing with a bunch of layers imo. You can name all your layers, but why go to the extra trouble if there's no reason to deal with all those layers in the first place?

The 3 day method
>Day 1: Draw a character's full body as well as you can, don't trim or hide parts you aren't good at
>Day 2 part 1: Grab a pose collection book and practice the poses. Don't grind and overdo, concentrate for a short while. Draw cross-section wireframes around every pose. Make mental note of every solid you're drawing and try to understand the forms
>Day 2 part 2: Choose the coolest pose you drew and use a mannequin in the same pose, then draw the same pose in several different angles. Draw the wireframes around these too. The goal is make you understand the 3D shape of the figure and be able to reproduce it in your head in any position. Don't trace, instead approach it with a constructive mindset
>Day 3: Draw the original full body again using the 3D sensation you should have developed at day 2. Make written notes of everything that you improved upon

Anon saying he drew from imagination makes no sense since the process is not about imagination at all, what poses did he draw? What did the day 2 practice look like? The actually good advice seems to be ignored, what were the notes you made between the pieces?

I watched the 3 month video and it's exactly what I expected too.

>lifelong artist with halfway decent ability but lack of focus
>decides to finally rethink what he's doing and bring it all together into finished pieces

Here's the process:
>1. Find your role model
>2. Draw original pieces with that role model's style
>3. Compare your piece to the role model's
>4. Identify every problem you see
>5. Work on those problems
>repeat

Copying artists is a good way to learn for sure, but only if you actually try to copy their process and markmaking instead of plainly copying what you see using poor technique.
It will very much force a beginner to take shortcuts if they don't realize the self-critique part and what it takes to actually develop their role model's pictures. This is not a /beg/ method, it's a style development method.

I rather just stick with 2, one for lines and one for everything else, so I can just paint and forget about changing layers. It's more enjoyable that way for me.

I feel the methods have the same problem FWAP have: They underestimate how overwhelmed a beginner inevitably gets and fail to account for the fact that a beginner will have to absolutely take shortcuts to meet the most plain of standards.
With the loomis heads for example, the goal is to make the student understand how the forms are placed in 3D space around the head but a beginner will simply not get this at all, they will simply draw overlapping circles and try to eyeball the proportions. Naoki's method is also all about 3D space but instead of boxes and cylinders you're instead jumping straight into full bodies which is absolutely out of the scope of a beginner that needs to learn 3D space, which will force them to eyeball the lines instead.

This is a recent manga by Nico Tanigawa (the artist), but more than two years ago. Generally speaking, manga and anime are heavily deformed, so it is better to use it only as a reference to learn about artwork styles. Unless you want to be a manga/anime drawer.

Most manga "artists" outright trace from 3D models or mannequins and have very poor understanding of space and form, fumbling hard to place facial features in some unpracticed position for example.
I don't know why anons are so enamored by manga when it's 99% a storytelling format with art being secondary at best for most mangakas.

I'm the anon who posted the before and after, which were day 1 and day 3 specifically. I already posted the 2nd day before. Day 2 I used the ref book Naoki recommended and a 3d model for copying from multiple angles. Unless I read it wrong, you're supposed to draw a character from imagination in the first and second day, all to understand how to draw 3d better, it doesn’t even make sense to use ref on day 1 and 3 when you're tryng to understand how to draw in 3d

How do I use reference pics to make my own fanart? I can only draw what I see, how do I change things

>> No.6166607

>>6166604
First copy the reference to get used to the subject's features, then draw it from different angles. Don't stay stuck in the typical /beg/ cycle of slowly drawing one thing once then being done with it, you should fill a whole page of sketches until you get become comfortable with a subject.

Draw it from different angles from different references or try to twist it solo (and how I do that) ?

>> No.6166614

>>6166609
Your goal with references is to memorize the subject's features and have a little workflow so that you can draw them in any angle and pose. To draw something in any angle you learn perspective and form and think of every feature within the context of 3D space.
Beginner books and courses focus so much on this because it's pretty much 80% of the work involved in drawing.

But wouldn't I need atleast a side references and front to know the proportions and all?

>> No.6166629

>>6166617
Do not focus on measuring proportions because no one gives a shit and it's actively detrimental while drawing, it's fine to look at a reference while drawing but you simply won't need to once you actually get used to the subject.
It's not a grind where the goal is accuracy, the goal is to build up your visual library and that's where different angles come in, it forces you to think beyond the flat image you see. You change things by mechanically forcing yourself into a situation where you can't just copy.

Learn and practice the basic forms like boxes, cylinders and arbitrary organic shapes, learn to think in terms of camera angles and foreshortenings, build that up to increase complexity, drawing several shapes in one scene, making shapes more complex, overlapping them, etc.
The canvas is not a flat board but a window to a 3D space. Things like line flow and perspective aren't just cosmetic improvements but are meant to fundamentally change how you think while drawing.
If you think of a simplified head as a sphere for example you can then draw that sphere in any angle, with the features being rotated along the surface. Your accuracy will suck at first and you'll break your head but it's very much worth it.

Drawabox helped me understand it from a logical standpoint but I only internalized it properly when I started practicing organic shapes like pic related. You can find lots of explanations and I think Peter Han's dynamic sketching is the go-to for this.
Also try to match the depth of the shape with line pressure as you are drawing, so a blob with one side closer to the camera will have a thicker line, you'll push harder which makes you instinctively associate pressure with depth which helped me a lot to think in the third dimension.

How to know if I have used my hour a day practicing effectively?

>> No.6166717

Did you produce a full high quality art piece or fill in at least a few pages of practice?
Did you struggle and feel confused of frustrated at points and to move past it you tackled the points that made you feel that way instead of brushing them aside?
If yes to both you probably made good use of your time, if you didn't really do any work or you breezed through the entire thing without firing up your brain you probably wasted it

desu don't blame you, I prefer to just work on drawing and practice at the moment only shading with my pencil
Once I've figured out how to make something with structure and lines look good I'll bother to figure out how to render and do colour even though it will probably take a year
For now busting out a couple pages each day of gesture and some pages on whatever lessons I'm currently learning from books/courses is enough

Completely agree, feel like most people after doing art casually for like 5+ years (sketching around somewhat seriously in your youth during school and/or uni years), will lead to an artist who can use Naoki method. But it's not really a method, more just gaining focus and confidence now that the end goal seems within reach.

bitch just say you cant paint for shit if brushes and canvases dont exist
my cave paintings are good no need for adjustment cuz i have a fucking finger
i dont use artificial surfaces to paint that is a /beg/ mistake shithead if you dont know ur geology from the start
i use a frayed stick to mix water into dry pigment but thats it overkill is using for spreading the paint etc
if you are handicapped okay just dont go policing others to use modern tools when obviosly people exist who dont need brushes

Nice baseless argument, go fuck yourself luddite retard.
