IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER OR /INT/ERMEDIATE IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice.
Use this thread instead of making new threads or post in the drawthread with fundamental exercises.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS using one of the following methods:
1. screenshot the image and post that instead
2. change camera capture settings to something smaller
3. send to computer and resize in MSPaint

RECOMMENDED BOOKS FOR BEGINNERS:
- Keys to drawing
- Perspective made easy
- Figure - Design and invention
- Pen and Ink

TRY TO BE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK.
When giving feedback, avoid vague "advice" - point what's wrong and try to give the anon you're quoting a clear direction to improve their art (study heads < watch THIS VIDEO about head structure, read THIS SECTION of THIS ARTIST'S BOOK, etc).
You, feedback seeking anon, should also try to be clear and concise when asking for critique/help. When posting your artwork, say what you want help with, and what's your goal with the study/artwork.

Perspective is a bit wonky but composition saves it. (not the camera perspective itself, that's good, more just a few objects feel off, like the cross not being vertical or the facade of the church not being symetrical). I like the colors and atention to detail. Pretty GMI

Tried to translate the skills to a larger watercolor study (tried to stylize it off of one of Ishida Sui's pics).

Exupery ones, being simpler, are better evidently. Pardon whatever anatomy/whatever else I might've botched. Didn't have the confidence to shade with darker tones so I went for a more muted piece. Should've gone for a G-Pen or fineliner as well.

Still perusing Hampton's book so maybe I'll get a good inkling on how to do light/contrast/shadowy stuff in there.

Very much starting out. I really should still be drawing boxes, but I wanted to see if I could make a female torso/hip. I have yet to do any serious anatomy studying, so I only have very basic ideas of stuff like the ribcage. Is there a way to make this look more feminine? Is there something about the torso height relative to where it connects to the hip? I feel like this could equally as likely be a thin male.

I commend you even for trying this pose, I know few artists who could pull it off without any reference or anything, even me on this case because I myself not sure how well I did, I still wanted to try it. But you just not there yet, draw more a few primitives on perspective, more cylinders and cubes until you get a better understanding of how they are supposed to look and use in your construction. But I like the lineweight and you tell well a story using just a short illustration.

Learn about the perspective guides. How to build them and how to use them properly, start with one point, two points and finally three pointing when you have your shit together.

Do enough and you won't need the guides as much, but still is useful. I would say that building them properly is the hardest part if you are doing it traditional, what I would recommend even if you are work digitally. If you insist in doing digitally just look a tutorial online, is one minute set up.

Anything else is pretty self explanatory, just follow the guides and draw the boxes, add detail to the boxes. If you want anything more interesting them simply boxes try drawing some minecraft landscape, really is the ultimate perspective box challenge.

I'm not the guy to talk about this considering my giant thick chick drawing was off point but I'll throw my 2 cents in anyway. the way I try to visualize things is the drawing is broken up into pieces. Drawing circles in segmented parts to visualize how they appear in space is a good way to get an eye for perspective. Look at really funky perspective shots and try to recreate the base by breaking down it's elements. If you have a picture of a hand reaching out against the camera recreate it by assigning a color for each limb and fitting the piece together by layering circles until you have an image with basic perspective

can't really speak for any of those specifically, but I own a intuos pro m and an xp-pen screen tablet because I wanted to try one without paying through the nose for it.
The intuos definitely still feels better but I can't tell if that's because the xp-pen is just a cheaper brand or because screen tablets in general feel a bit off.
They both get the job done tho.

A buddy of mine got into art recently and bought a huion, we had some problems getting the pressure sensitivity to work at first and he quickly left it behind in favor for pencil and sketchbook.
A lot of complete beginners have that problem initially, that they buy a tablet and then let it collect dust while they're leveling up traditionally, so it might be better just going for the cheapest of the three.

but if you have to get one I'd say in exactly the reverse order that you posted them.

there might be something to that, the ones I own have roughly the drawing area of regular printer paper while my friends huion was about half that and it definitely didn't feel great.
Still, theres people out there capable of making professional art with smaller tablets so it can't be that horrible right?

You draw from reference and apply what you learn from studying reference to what you draw from imagination. Very few people are masters of drawing the human form, but a good drawing cannot be built without a firm understanding of anatomy and proportion. As far as drawing crazy angles goes, how often are you going to be called to do that? Worry about drawing the basic angles for now.

You have to study photos (or live subjects), or learn anatomy directly from a book or teacher. If you just draw from imagination and you don't have incredible visual memory (as you get more experienced as an artist you eventually WILL have an incredible visual memory, as long as you keep progressing; it's something most people think of as innate but it is a skill that can be learned), all you're going to do is draw people wrong over and over. Basically exactly this >>6158568
>How can I draw crazy angles when there aren't references ?
Early on, composite references or combine references with something like a doll or mannequin (I dunno where you live but if you're in America every Walmart I've been to across the nation has sold cheap wooden artists' posing dolls, so they're very easy to get, and of course there are virtual versions), or do the pose yourself and photograph it.
>Do you have to master anatomy, perspective and then you can draw any pose by constructing your person by each body part, making sure it's in perspective and it's all connected and correct?
Yep, pretty much. Your anatomy doesn't actually have to be perfect, most people can't tell the difference as long as it's close enough, though having a better understanding will allow you to add more detail while maintaining verisimilitude, plus there are some things most people's eyes glance over without consciously noticing whether they're there or not but that look very pleasing, like the contours of the collarbome and the "hip dip" between the hipbone and thigh. But yeah, at least get an idea for the general physical form/shape, how joints deform when they bend and learn perspective and it's not too hard to draw most poses and angles from imagination. The hardest thing to learn is going to be foreshortening, because for whatever reason people's brains don't seem good at processing rounded objects in perspective.

Tiny hands and pencil neck may have been intentional but are not inherently cute imo. Big eyes and low eyes are cute but that's too low. You shouldn't go lower than on a human baby and even that can be pushing it. I don't have my tablet handy right now or I'd just lasso them up into a better-looking position or something. Strictly for making it cute little things like this probably don't matter much (for this composition anyway, because they're less noticeable) but her legs are very different thicknesses and her collar is off-centre which also makes her neck look off-centre.

First off, I'm in the camp that thinks it doesn't look like ass. I suspect that you would think the same if somebody else had drawn the exact same thing and posted it. Second, you're asking for practical solutions to what is ultimately a subjective problem. Thin the eyebrows? Maybe don't draw the lower eyelashes? Don't give the figure doll hands? Don't cut the legs off above the knees and just leave the linework open? This is all shit I would do, but I wouldn't say it would make the drawing cuter.

Change the composition. The one pictured is dull, almost comical. It's like the punchline to a 2-panel comic strip. Change the angle. Widen the gap between the figure and the ledge. Study photos of atheletes competing in long jump.

I didn't even realise it was supposed to be a sword he was holding. In Miura's art you'll notice the big swords are always behind Guts when he's moving forward, and then he either halts and pulls them up (giving the impression that the momentum has been transferred into the sword) or pulls them over his shoulder and smashes them down. Holding the sword forward while running or leaping is more the sort of thing a commander would do with a thin sabre (and IIRC Griffith does that as well). You probably have a pretty good idea of what Miura's art looks like and the impressions it gives when you see it, or art like it, but to draw something similar you'll have to REALLY see it, and the easiest way to do that is to copy it as a reference (which is what a study is) because that forces you to look at all the details and think about why they are the way they are.

Today's draws. I'm fairly impatient with each individual doodle but I'm trying to improve the overall shape, form, and perspective and not fuss about details for the most part. There's obviously lots to improve but it feels nice to draw stuff.

I use this very own tablet and I've been drawing for less than a year. I also use Krita. Just iterate on the subjects and tools. It takes a while to get used to drawing with a tablet.

For this one, for example, I used the Basic-3__Flow pen for lines and Basic-5__Size for filling. I've also found out that you can use a selection tool and hit Backspace to fill your selection with your secondary color.

I recently decided to come back to Twitter, I have to start all over again... maybe these little drawings will make me win a handful of subscribers, I don't hide that it would make me a little happy because it's always interesting to exchange with enthusiasts.

but I know I'm on the list (the French woke community has already spotted me, they make lists of people to ban and block). I'm afraid this Twitter account will be deleted soon, even if we say nothing serious, on a misunderstanding we can lose everything.

I'm not a good example for constructing the heads, I still have issues with proportions when drawing heads at angles. But the way I start the drawing is I usually draw a circle and a line across for the direction I want the head to face, it's treated as a guideline and is usually erased when blocking in the forms. Something to keep in mind is the skull is not a circle but more of a boxy oval shape.

you have to slow down and copy the reference exactly. you should be constantly using comparative measurements to make sure everything is proportionate. You are obviously rushing. You will eventually get faster, but you have to do this over and over and over again. Those references should take you a couple hours each. Also draw larger.

ok, first things first, software doesnt matter so dont think about how to do x ad y in wtv software you arent doing anything you cant do with other programs assuming they arent ms paint

moving on
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zLg6xM02CLQ&t=14s

you are already doing this so just keep going, the img is just smooth little texture shading you should be able to do with just a soft brush focusing on ambient occlusion

also the black lines are too strong so blend them out a bit and soften them so they dont create that graphic effect instead of a more realistic one
if you look at the ref the blackest lines are still soft transitioning out

like the vid i linked do general occlusion pass then go in and render the texture after

Try making each line in one long motion. You can go over the line again if you want and it's not quite perfect, or even make the line up from multiple strokes if you get good at hand control, just try not to do these little tiny lines that go all over the place. I know these are just practice but if you chicken scratch while practicing you'll ingrain it as a bad habit and be less comfortable drawing lines confidently; In fact, because it's just practice, it's the best time to draw confidently even if you're not good yet, because it doesn't matter if you make mistakes.

I lost motivation to work on this once I flipped the canvas and realized the eyes aren't lined up correctly (aside from the fact that they are already kind of fucked). Would love some thoughts though, I'm kind of struggling trying to render.

Doesn't matter, you shouldn't really erase a lot either but since you'll be drawing digitally I guess you'll always have an undo button and perfect erasers anyway. But anyway that's why I said it doesn't matter if you go over the line multiple times, just make it one long line.

What's the trick to getting base color in when using anti-aliased brushes?
I'm too used to just being able to use the fill tool with pixellated ones. The closest solution I've found is the magic wand tool and invert-selection, but it's still more difficult, and for one reason or another I just can't deal with colouring inside the lines digitally despite finding it no problem whatsoever working physically.

I haven't drawn in the better part of a year or so but I'm trying to get back in the saddle of things-- I never did get very far at up on the /beg/ level.
I started randomly ghosting lines and drawing circles but I realized I have no clue why I'm doing that and what the fuck I'm doing.
I dunno, is there anything I can get from looking at this page or did I waste my time?

I'm going to be blunt: Nothing about it is of acceptable quality except arguably your line control (but that's assuming all those lines are where you wanted them to be to begin with). If you want to draw characters in poses, the foundational skill you should grind first is gesture. You need to get a good sense of how the body directs force and attention around itself and how it interacts with the ground (ie how the linear downward pull of gravity affects a figure and how they balance) or poses will look floaty, stiff and unnatural like this.

After that there are two big areas I see you need to improve: One is cross-contours, and these may screw you over even just doing gesture unless you have innately good observational skills when working from reference. This means things like the way the sleeves curve when crossing the arm, or the little bit of extra line that goes in on a joint to show that the sections of a limb overlap. Since it's in front of her head, I assume the left arm is supposed to be coming toward the viewer, so the sleeve contour there is right at least. I'm literally not sure what you intended to do with the right arm. If it's going back, as the wrist contour and the bit of palm in front of the thumb would suggest, then the sleeve is going the wrong way and the thumb is also on the wrong side; If it's also supposed to be coming forward, then the first two contours I mentioned are wrong. Bad cross contours makes everything look flatter, even more than things like simple bad anatomy (like that left shoulder...) will, and are therefore key to "cartoony" artstyles that simplify or ignore many "realistic" aspects of their subjects.

The third thing is facial proportions, which are very important for appeal. Gonna second >>6160431 because FWAP will teach you the basics there.

You practiced on your lines/accuracy. Its not waste time but i wouldn't bother much.
Accuracy and clear lines comes with practice, a quick warmup of drawing circles before actuall studies is pretty ok tho.
Just move on, you will be able to draw perfect circles anyway later.

I think krita has an option to expand the filled area by x pixels, because most software does and krita tries to keep pace with standards. I don't know if it has a "refer other layers" option for its paint bucket yet but CSP has that so I assume krita will at some point if it doesn't yet. What you do is have it expand by 2-3 pixels and fill on an underlying raster layer, and it preserves the antialiasing. If there are holes, you clean them up with hard round, but you don't have to colour the entire thing or even the entire border by hand that way.
