/beg/ & /int/ - Beginner and Intermediate Thread

IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER OR /INT/ERMEDIATE IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice.
Use this thread instead of making new threads or post in the drawthread with fundamental exercises.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS using one of the following methods:
1. screenshot the image and post that instead
2. change camera capture settings to something smaller
3. send to computer and resize in MSPaint
4. does anybody actually read this?

READ THE STICKY:
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1uwaXKU7ev6Tw_or__o8ARpUb6r2rCZYJGqwSFV9AD98/edit#bookmark=id.15jx3pyuimvj

RECOMMENDED BOOKS FOR BEGINNERS:
- Keys to drawing
- Perspective made easy
- Figure - Design and invention
- Pen and Ink

TRY TO BE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK.
When giving feedback, avoid vague "advice" - point what's wrong and try to give the anon you're quoting a clear direction to improve their art (study heads < watch THIS VIDEO about head structure, read THIS SECTION of THIS ARTIST'S BOOK, etc).
You, feedback seeking anon, should also try to be clear and concise when asking for critique/help. When posting your artwork, say what you want help with, and what's your goal with the study/artwork.

Is choosing to not color pieces for a lot of time just to focus on inking and making my sketches, shapes, forms, lineart, props, clothes/hair, etc. fairly detailed viable if I don't care much about rendering? The point of the exercise is to show you that your brain is trying to take over and interprets when it can recognize the subject,
but when the subject is obfuscated (turned upside down / parts covered) you can focus more clearly on distances and accuracy thereby ironically creating a better drawing.
your drawing is pretty proportionally off so I'm not sure you did it properly, however if you think you recognized that effect you should move on.

I also save reference/pictures 90% of my 4TB drive consist of porn, body parts, poses and what not but I still find myself googling, and actively searching for more when I draw, it's insanely time consuming and it kills my drive to actually draw when I finally find exactly what I want. I thought of maybe taking my own body/poses as reference to reduce the time it takes to find extremely specific stuff, but I feel like my discipline is either nonexistent, or I just completely lose interest if my coomer brain isn't activated at all times and constantly consuming porn, almost as if my entire drive to draw is just fueled by being horny

Don't think I am rushing much, trying to be at least a little thoughtful. I'd rather not use a ruler, I think I would rather just get better at drawing the lines, there's no need for things to be 100%. I think my lines are fairly straight anyways, what I struggle more with (at least what I think myself) is placing shapes in the right place. For example I can draw an ok oval, but if I want to place the oval on an existing axis I'll miss it slightly, ending up with very wonky shapes. My cylinders are garbage because of this, trying to make the main axis first and then adding the ellipse on it's perpendicular axes.

That's just practice anyways I'm pretty sure, I'll get better as long as I am mindful of it.

We're looking at the cock from the front in 3:4 view, but the shaft seems to be in profile glans looks like it's drawn from behind. It can curve, but rarely that much. Also, the mons pubis seems to dip in front of the base of the cock.
The breasts seem squished together in front of the torso as if held up by an invisible push-up bra. Probably not impossible to get that look with implants, but usually not desirable.

Questions about Hampton
1: How do you actually go about finding the center of gravity?
2: For the "about to" poses and that triangle, what exactly is meant by the stable bottom? Because some of the examples, while looking wonky, still look pretty straight and stable across the ground

Gesture is one of the hardest things to grasp, be patient with yourself. What helped me was seeing a bunch of different approaches that different people take when doing gestures, I was limiting myself too much in what I allowed myself to do.
First off, don't do timed gestures until you feel somewhat comfortable with the whole process. Take some time to actually analyze what the model is doing, are they twisting? Leaning to one side? Which leg are they putting their weight on?
After that, try to identify the tilt of the shoulders and the pelvis, they should always oppose each other. That should get you started at least. Keep up the practice when you can, don't drive yourself insane

My studies and ref stuff always turn out better than my imagination, which I guess is going to be true for a long while, but my real issue is that I don't know how to finish pieces to make them attractive ie - lines/detailing etc and how to make stuff distinctive. My pieces end up looking like in pic related. It's a study which I did in the video. What direction should I take in order to get better finished quality stuff? What am I lacking?

thanks

Stopped working on it for a couple of weeks while I worked on other things, but I’m translating the emotions of Loomis into these characters I’m working on drawing for that faggy project I was working on.

Translating the tips from Loomis over to the OG artstyle takes a few goes and using refrences in the show somewhat, but the emotion’s definitely improving. The problem is the ears and hair not having a good ref to draw from, the face seems too round when I try to copy the loomis ball and pieces into the creation, and I can’t get the proportions exact, partly because all we have animation wise to work with is a reference with a hat on, (since you know, background character). I know the back of the head would look different than in my traced version of the sheet with hair, I guess I should redo that…

I can feel it all improving I just still hate that what’s going on in my brain isn’t coming out on the paper. Also, how the hell do you draw little details by moving your shoulder, it feels wrong when I’m not shading in stuff

Kind of obvious, but top’s the real ref

I tend to use my wrist for detail work or drawing complex shapes that require finer motor control. Drawing from the shoulder is better suited to gesture and large strokes.

Like I’m gonna have to draw so much of this bitch, and this is all that’s ever been made of her and I don’t know what to draw for her back or how to think of what to draw for them.

I mean I get just the backside of the uniform, but it’s still feeling like there’s not a lot to work on for this character.

https://youtu.be/lUxVeKOyXew 20 seconds in is all the character got in the real show (keeping the reference colors because the canon palate looks dumber) so it’s not a lot to work with.

I mean, I gotta figure it out, yeah, she’s got this whole powerset with these stretchy shadow limbs, and I figured she’s got a mouth behind the bone jaw neckpiece, but… I don’t know it feels intimidating to have to create a reference like this, and, I’m not sure how to go about it.

Oh, well okay then I guess I was doing it right in the end.
>make a character sheet
I guess this is one of those ‘just quit being anxious and do it’ things… fuck though I’m paranoid about it and I can’t really express why…

Okay, I think, I’m worried about not just drawing from the show’s reference, because then it’s not a derivative of something established as their quality, but it came from me, and… I suck? Like, I’m not Disney quality and now I’m not even drawing from Disney quality so it’s gonna come out wrong. I’ve got an OC I haven’t drawn specifically for this reason, I don’t know if I can make him the right amount of distinction for the character, without making him too busy to draw over and over and over.

Although typing it all out I feel like this is just my anxiety and self-hatred coming out, and I should stop worrying about now being as good as Matheiu Cousin out the gate and draw…

My biggest gripe in my decade of drawing is that i never seem to stay consistant with my advancement in art. one day i am on top of the world, the other i am just MSpaint teir.

yet i find myself leagues behind the likes of Taran fiddler or the people i look up. and i ask myself where i am going wrong and what sort of mental barriers i struggle with.

the worst thing i struggle with is the mental barriers i dont see, and even then, i find myself less motivated to draw. how can i break out of this cycle?

Anon let me be honest with you - there's no form, it's flat. You don't just need some tutorials, you need to learn the fundamentals if you want to draw like Fiddler. There is no other way to learn how to draw. Draw what you see and learn to construct. Learn figure drawing, some anatomy. Learn perspective. And keep drawing.

You must keep drawing - there is no other way.

Oh yeah all my sketches start out like that. I'm drawing on a phone so I basically have to turd polish and line refine until I'm done. I can do without the polish for that one because I'm really just trying to practice anatomy and perspective. My goal is one to two finished drawings a week but I often don't finish and just start on something else. Here's one I did a while back but never completed

I am very similar like you I have been drawing for like 15 years now and I basically have no idea of what am I doing, I have done the "fundamental" exercises several times and still don't get it how they are supposed to help, plus perspective just makes no sense in my brain.

Royce, I know that you are trying. I'm not crabbing I'm telling you it's futile. Your efforts and time and being wasted, you are literally incapable on a neurological level. Either enjoy what you are drawing now or spend your time on something that you do enjoy. I've come across many like you and theres just something in the way your brain is wired. Maybe it's a benefit in other fields but not art, Royce.

What he >>6155611 is saying is correct, don't believe the practice & fundies retards, is a physiological issue I have the same issue, is like "practicing how to be taller" you either have it or you don't, is completely genetic and has to do with how our brains were formed and the genetics of our ancestors.

How do I learn to eyeball vanishing points? I'm not supposed to contruct the vanishing lines every single time right? They are off the page most of the time anyway. At least in portraits.
Should I just draw them as if I'm looking at the object from very far away and keep all lines parallel?
Are there any exercises to improve perspective eyeballing?

>> No.6156519

>>6156423
You don't need to draw a horizon line for every picture. It comes in handy when composing a picture with multiple subjects, but I don't know how useful it would be for a portrait. If you needed to foreshorten a limb or something, I would just keep in mind that things closer to the viewer appear larger than normal, and things further away from the viewer appear smaller than normal.

How do I improve my accuracy? Even when I am literally tracing I am unable to trace accurately. My strokes just never follow the line. Sometimes I start the line in same wrong angle six times or seven times in a row, i don't understand what i am doing wrong. And curves are downright impossible to trace. Better, but you gotta work that hueshift into all levels of the gradation/value shift. Right now you just slapped it in the darkest spots.
