/beg/ & /int/ - Beginner and Intermediate Thread

IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER OR /INT/ERMEDIATE IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice.
Use this thread instead of making new threads or post in the drawthread with fundamental exercises.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS using one of the following methods:
1. screenshot the image and post that instead
2. change camera capture settings to something smaller
3. send to computer and resize in MSPaint
4. does anybody actually read this?

READ THE STICKY:
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1uwaXKU7ev6Tw_or__o8ARpUb6r2rCZYJGqwSFV9AD98/edit#bookmark=id.15jx3pyuimvj

RECOMMENDED BOOKS FOR BEGINNERS:
- Keys to drawing
- Perspective made easy
- Figure - Design and invention
- Pen and Ink

TRY TO BE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK.
When giving feedback, avoid vague "advice" - point what's wrong and try to give the anon you're quoting a clear direction to improve their art (study heads < watch THIS VIDEO about head structure, read THIS SECTION of THIS ARTIST'S BOOK, etc).
You, feedback seeking anon, should also try to be clear and concise when asking for critique/help. When posting your artwork, say what you want help with, and what's your goal with the study/artwork.

Gonna force myself to read Loomis cover to cover, actually do the exercises, and post them here.

Fun With a Pencil: Part 26

Copied Loomis' running and jumping man example, focused on speed rather than accuracy and shaved my time down to 12ish minutes for this group. My work still looks messy as fuck, but at least the motion still came through a little.

Next up is the epic saga of Doohinkus getting his shit slapped by Gashouse Nellie.

From the way you've drawn the shadow, the light source is somewhere in front of the figure. The shadow would project onto the wall and corner, away from the figure. The cans on the floor should also cast a shadow if the figure is casting a shadow.

Maybe the painting in real life doesnt have fucked up contrast, but your camera captured it very de-saturated. I suggest to either get better at photography or getting used to slight digital editing to restore the color balance in digital RGB space. Like look at that black censor bars. They are dark blue/gray on my monitor.

Also the blue background deserved some sort of texture or shading. Common in real world painting you just dip the brush into any other color, one stroke and you get interesting texture.

Linear perspective is literally a "subclass" of linear algebra. It deals with projecting three dimensional space into two dimensions space. Every single software like video games or blender runs the same equations. And these very accurately describe how we (humans) perceive space around us. So yeah. It works everywhere. On everything. Even on round objects like balls, even on blob of smile devoid of a single continuous surface.
>tried this?
Tried what? Marking vanishing points for every single surface in painting? Thats a little overkill. Usually you need just 1, sometimes up to three. Coincidentally i am just now at 1point perspective in keys to drawing book.

Yes. See how you have the shadow "hiding" behind the figure in >>6146218? The figure's head is bent, so you bent the shadow's head. That woule make sense if the shadow was in profile, but the shadow is being cast behind the figure. You have to think in terms of silhouette when drawing shadows.

You're work isn't soulless, just too technical. But that's what happens with studies.
A few suggestions. Why do you draw in such low resolution? I think you should either increase the dpi or zoom out a little. Also when you sketch, it's a good idea for beginners to use larger brush sizes for their sketches, then switch to a smaller brush for linework. It looks like 5 pixel wide brush is used for your studies, which just makes things harder for you. The most important thing for beginners is to not only copy what you study but to really analyze it. Spend a few minutes just looking at the reference to see how it's really shaped.

Shoulder width is borderline, but I think you're out of the tranny-zone. The perspective is off, you did the beg trap thing where you draw two parallel features at a perfect right angle to each other. Look at her nips and knees, one is facing the viewer and the other is perfectly perpendicular (I noticed cause I do this all the time). I know this was an anatomy study, but something to look out for in the future. Anatomically it looks fine to me.

Also some things I've noticed for drawing muscular women without going trannymode, is to generally avoid overly defining the upper body muscles, especially the shoulders and upper back muscles, not that you did that here.

>>6147222
this is better for begs too, though. were you here last year? beg was an absolute shit show, and we've always had ints here too since /int/ never really works. it's hard to define where /beg/ ends and /int/ begins, so it's usually just a lot of crabbing "go back to /beg/" type of shit

As you can tell by these faces, I don't draw many anime/3d girls because I lack interest but these are competent entertainers from what I remember, liked/fell for their theming design.

On big errors, ignoring small: messed up superbat's pose from reference so improvised a bit, didn't know what to do with below his waist so I tried to make him float a bit because Supes tends to do that.
Human figures above that just lol, always feels different from a pic rather than in life.
Piccolo's neck is too thick but I didn't correct it early.
Top right thing was more of a speed doodle from reference.
Two bottom right were just really quick rent free memory things.
>biggest that effects (you) if you look at it; Didn't go over most of these more than once so they're more visible in a picture nor use darker strokes the first time to compensate, so lazy auto Pshop instead.

I might have realized what my biggest problem is: I basically draw everything (head, arms, hands, etc.) As a single thing to spend time on instead of the body as a whole on the spot, which might explain my wonky ass poses and understanding how the body works. This is what not studying gesture properly does to a mf.

Taking the bad facial expressions aside and the stiffness, how far I am from being a good artist by social media/mangaka standard? I want to improve relatively quickly and even something like 3 or 4 years seems too much for my liking. Keep in mind I want to reach around the same level of someone who has a decent understanding of fundies and an appealing enough art style, not a master.

Every single surface has its own vanishing point. The point can be anywhere but in typical drawing the objects are either very small so its waste of time to look for them or there are few objects which all "share" (same area) same 1~3 vanishing points. Like buildings on the street or windows.

Yes multiple VP can coexist and not just on the horizon line, they can be even up or down (if you look at stuff bellow or above you).

This is one of those drawings where you correct one problem, see two more that need fixing, and you end up redrawing the entire thing if you aren't careful. Starting from the top:
>Hair
The hair is too far receded on the side. The hair wouldn't work the way as drawn. I've shown where the hair should start on the head, and where the part would be.
>Left hand
Minor correction. Hands are tough.
>Breasts
Breasts are connected to the pectoral muscles, not the ribcage. The breasts are too low on the chest. The left breast is drawn as if it was in profile. The nipples are pointed in opposite directions. Here's a tip: the pecs and the breasts should be parallel with each other. If the left pec is is higher than the right, the corresponding breasts should be the same.
>Right hand
What happened here? It looks like you started drawing it correctly, but flipped it for some reason. Also, you gave yourself a cube to help place the body in space. Use it!
>Butt
The butt is formless like a beanbag chair, and the figure is sinking into it. I know you're trying to make it look soft and cushiony, but it's still attached to the hips. It still has muscle. Again, use the cube to help give it shape.
>Legs
It's mainly the left leg that's the problem. It's disproportionately large. The kneecaps on both legs are likewise tinier than they should be. Make the legs smaller, the kneecaps bigger.

That's it. This is my second time typing all this shit up. Hope it helps!

I think I didn't save the pic with the tutorial
but you just fill in the shape with a flat medium tone gray, then you create an overlay layer on top of it, block in the black, then use soft eraser and hard eraser for the shapes. you do the same thing for lights, except you use white to block in and use a screen layer instead. highlights can be added with a hard brush on a layer on the top. truth be told though, I'm not very sure of what I am doing and the quality of my render varies a lot.
