one reason I could say is speed, even if I'm doing something heavily referenced being able to come up or adjust something quickly based on all my practice allows me to do shit faster than by searching the "right" image to trace, but I guess it depends on your artistic and not artistic goals, if it works for you, more power to you

I also think it bears mentioning that CuteSexyRobutts has both artistic success (while I don't actually care for his art, it's exponentially better than Shexyo's colorless, sterile, samey looking crap) and financial success at the same time. You don't actually have to give up one for the other.
