/beg/ & /int/ - Beginner and Intermediate Thread

IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER OR /INT/ERMEDIATE IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice.
Use this thread instead of making new threads or post in the drawthread with fundamental exercises.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS using one of the following methods:
1. screenshot the image and post that instead
2. change camera capture settings to something smaller
3. send to computer and resize in MSPaint

READ THE STICKY:

RECOMMENDED BOOKS FOR BEGINNERS:
- Keys to drawing
- Perspective made easy
- Figure - Design and invention
- Pen and Ink

TRY TO BE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK.
When giving feedback, avoid vague "advice" - point what's wrong and try to give the anon you're quoting a clear direction to improve their art (study heads < watch THIS VIDEO about head structure, read THIS SECTION of THIS ARTIST'S BOOK, etc).
You, feedback seeking anon, should also try to be clear and concise when asking for critique/help. When posting your artwork, say what you want help with, and what's your goal with the study/artwork.

Looks okay besides the upper lid being off, the center eye needing to be corrected and then the starting curve of that upper cheek bone I think should be angled differently. Oh also I think the distance from said eye and the bridge of the nose I think it's called? Where you drew the line through is too far forward, throwing off the rest of his face?

The point is to copy the proportions exactly right? What do I know though.

Beyond just constantly grinding, is there anything else I should do for improvement? I'm currently using overhand grip, A4 paper and a drawing board. I know rotating the page to get the most comfortable angle helps, but I want to get used to not relying on that.

"refer other layers" under paint bucket
g-pen/turnip pen (slightly different flavours of hard round) for solid fills that the paint bucket doesn't work well for (tiny colour regions, lines that are really close to each other, stray pixels, regions within the same outline that need a different colour, etc)
soft or noise (both under airbrushes) for smooth shading (don't make ALL your shading smooth or it'll look muddy and ugly)
hard and soft eraser for manipulating edges on highlight and shadow layers

Time to induce cringe on everyone, get post processed anons kek

>> No.6138218

>>6138212
idk, I don't use it much personally. I've heard people both say that it's good and say that it's not so I suspect it's just different from the two main programs from which people switch to CSP, Photoshop and Krita. There will always be people who can't stand anything different from what they're used to (which is understandable when you have a workflow).

Big disadvantage of using soft rounds and soft round erasers is that to get variable gradient width you need to manipulate the brush size, either separating your strokes or tying size to pressure (which can be awkward if you're already using pressure for density). The rare cases where that becomes a problem for me are the only times I use blend or blur. But of course a lot of people find it easier to control where their shadows go with just hard round and blending (and psychopaths use hard round with pressure opacity to shade).

How do I improve my lines bros? I'm so used to chicken scratch and drawing thick lines so I can see wtf I'm doing

>> No.6138258

>>6138228
Personally I just use a sheet of paper and of course shoulder necessary for the longest lines draw a bunch of them. Varying the line weight for what you want to achieve/emphasis, less reliance on thick lines since you're aware of that habit and want to change it.

Common exercises are the ghosting method, the 2 points thing, probably some others but I don't know enough about it but I know there's books on the subject both trad(ink, graphite for sure and paint probably) plus computer art.

Take it seriously though, otherwise you'll get bad habits. My lines have a fucking curve to them that got built in because of bad practice and I have to retrain them.

Think about permanence/confidence and chicken scratches not being conductive to say stable forms(headcanon) but you can use it in certain parts of your work for varied lines? a better artist could explain that part.

Besides that opinion can't help you.

I thought maybe you were just using a scary looking tranny as reference but I looked her up and she looks nothing like that. At this stage maybe you should be studying purely from values until you have good control over value and shape as well as better accuracy when studying, especially since you're not sure how to fix things without changing her expression; if you accurately reproduced the photo obviously that wouldn't even be a concern.

>>6138377
Looks like ketchup. Blood is a bit darker and bluer. Also liquid on a surface doesn't shine like a pool of liquid sitting on a table would; it coats the surface and shines as that surface would if glossy. I know that may be hard to parse so here's a sloppy drawover to show you what I mean. That said, blood (as in gore, which has a slightly "rough" surface because it has minuscule chunks in it) isn't the glossiest liquid in the first place, and when thinly spread on a warm surface exposed to the air like skin it very quickly coagulates in parts, turning darker, a little browner and flaking off. It can be difficult to find non-legally-dubious reference for blood on skin of course, but maybe the next time you get a nosebleed or something let some drip on the back of your hand and study that.

Decent composition, not sure about the point of the subject, design is kind of myopic and brush control looks sloppy (works for drapery, weird for the feet). The reflection in the sphere doesn't seem to actually match what it's reflecting. Rod thing next to the figure is funny because I was just thumbnailing and did something similar with a magic staff following its owner. Why the scare quotes on "art"? Is it AI generated? It would explain some of the weirdness like the bent feet and wrong reflection I guess.

The fact that I could tell it's AI-generated is exactly why you shouldn't be worried. I didn't want to say "looks AI-generated" outright in case, I dunno, you suffered from terrible hand tremors or something, but it doesn't look made by human hands, and the design certainly doesn't look made by a human mind. It does look like something a human could polish up into something really cool-looking, though, for what that's worth. It looks great in thumbnail, the "hard" part of lighting is taken care of and there's plenty there to INSPIRE a design- Replace the random lines on the chest with kanji, sort out the control panel thing, fix the reflection, etc.

Also if you're who I think you are almost all the AI-generated stuff you've posted has had very similar composition, so while it's good composition, if that were all you ever output it would definitely get old. Colour choice is where the AI really excels and that's the way I'd be most likely to use this kind of thing- Give it some mood-evoking description, then just ignore the image it outputs and use a colour picker on it because colour gamuts can be a pain to use in a highly deliberate way anyway and you're not plagiarising if an AI made it.

I have seen some really cool AI art but it wasn't really AI-generated, it was stuff a skilled artist painted over, taking inspiration and composition from the AI output but effectively making a new painting on top of it. The current AI stuff is not much better than the AI stuff from five years ago, though it has certainly gotten better marketing lately.

What could I do to make this better? I don't feel like it's complete, yet I don't feel like there's anything left for me to add.
Is it a composition issue or something?

Don't even have to go into technical drawing to see why the lack of intention is a problem with AI art. Giving an AI a prompt when there's a specific idea you want illustrated is like looking for an image source via Google and getting the "visually similar images." Have those ever given you anything even vaguely close to what you actually wanted, or just things with vaguely similar shapes and colours? Because it's always been the latter for me.

Fingers look like sausage links and don't retain a solid shape throughout. /beg/s sometimes get told to think about the finger in segments so they don't draw them like bananas but at the same time you should remember there are strings running through the fingers so unless someone "double-jointed" is intentionally bending their finger slightly out of position, they aren't going to bend back and forth, they're all going to bend in the same direction.

I redlined it and used airbrush/eraser/lasso to adjust things but I'd recommend you do hand studies.

Also I didn't touch the seams even though they're what makes the fingers look like sausage links, just fyi. The noise makes it hard to make corrections that don't look like ass which is why I just scribbled with an airbrush too. But I'd also note that it seems like you did the pose with your own hand and tried to draw it, because there'd be a bigger gap between the index finger and middle finger, just not as big as you had it, and the index finger would be foreshortened; however, doing the pose myself, I only see the first two bone segments of my hand and a tiny bit of the last when doing the pose, but you drew all three about equal size.

not bad. I think the biggest thing people get stuck on (or I did) was figuring out how to 'transfer' being able to rough sketch with a pencil > making concise lines. If you don't have a pressure setting on your tablet you can try use the brush settings to change the tip size by velocity or something and I found that to kinda work for me (my advice is begtier though)

then what I might suggest is to try to set rules for yourself to get more 'feeling' out of your lines

One day I got introduced to someone elses Fanfic world that is well known in the fandom, and I was shocked to find how many similarities there were in both of our creations despite having zero contact with each other.
It became obvious that the same patterns I had seen from media, where also the same patterns someone else had picked up thus ending up in similar outputs.

There is nothing really ''creative'' about these thoughts, it just feels that way. In reality, its all processed and refined slur from different content that our society as a whole has likely experienced already

>Giving an AI a prompt when there's a specific idea you want illustrated is like looking for an image source via Google and getting the "visually similar images."

I can say I want the ai to create an elf archer in a tree, but there are an infinite number of ways to portray that.

AI might be useful for a company that doesn't really give a fuck about the art itself and just wants to make an illustration quickly, like if a coffee shop wants a drawing of a girl on her laptop in a cafe and they don't really care about the exact composition of it, but it will be useless for making actual art.

This must have been asked a ton of times (a few ones in this thread only) but still.
I'm a guy who used to draw during classes in school but nothing more, ever. So I'd like to start drawing seriously on my spare time and I'm looking for some exerices I can grind for a few months every day to get some basics.
The only thing I used to do, is copy some characters from Mangas I used to read and got so used of drawing some of them that I ended being able to "mix" everything up and draw specific poses/faces/eyes from memory.
Now I'd like to picture a pose in my mind and draw original designs. I opened Krita today and did this from this mannequin I have on my desk.
Should I keep doing this? Anything else I can do an hour or two a day everyday before doing my own thing?

Still working on the, "shield of Achilles". There's just so many human figures and more that I kind of needed to do something else even if it comes out poorly.

Doing this thing I noticed so many mistakes as put in more detail, so structurely unsound that I had to make lots of bad quick fixes, was pretty fun.

I humbly bow to professional draftsman and their mathematics, the ones that don't cut corners in the bad way at least.

I shouldn't blog but I just like to learn everything.

Forensics, history/myth, basic engineering because I'm a brainlet and would need to put serious time into the specialist fields, programming, fitness, Human languages and some other practical stuff.

With the Internet there's so much knowledge available to everyone, it seems like a waste of time to just spend it wanking off consuming porn or playing a video game; not that video games are bad, I played a lot in my early years I just cut time of them drastically for more hobbies.

Drawing like writing is a very human experience and I neglected it in my youth in favour of writing which I've had success in, but still I never really considered art because I never liked the majority of people who obsessed over it in public.

Also I feel it's good to have another medium to express Truth/reason through should it come to it/I need another hobby that isn't just another language.

There's so much you could be doing, so why wouldn't you want to be the absolute best you could be in everything you can learn?

But I'm a pretty logical spock type guy, or so they tell me.

Probably unrelated but cut down on your bad diet and exercise more if you don't, I don't know.

And as another Anon said, it isn't a race even if you plan to make it your career. Look at yourself and think about what you're doing, why are you drawing in the first place?

I'm pretty bad at art at the moment, though kek.

Doesn't mean what you think it means. Asian eyes are marked by having the epicanthal fold but most also have the "double lid" crease above the eye. The actual "double lid" is the small section in the corner of the eye under the fold of the eyelid, which asians and most anime characters lack.

Picrel for us crackers, >>6139678 for n*groids (not saying that woman is black either, but blacks also prefer pale-skinned girls in general; tan was popular in the 80s and 90s but is back out of vogue from what I've seen). Also east and west have both fetishised children and childlike features in women and girls since time immemorial, but it's currently unfashionable to admit it in the west, especially America, and so while the real beauty standards shown in celebrities and those known for their beautiful faces still reflect that, in our art and entertainment media there are loads of manfaces. "Feminine" traits and "juvenile" traits are practically synonymous, as mankind has bred neoteny into our women probably since the dawn of agriculture gave men options of who to fuck beyond their manfaced sisters who would stop being attractive around age 16. Many people when observing beauty standards make the mistake of looking at cultural trends in self-expression rather than at the kinds of people others rate highly in terms of beauty or that are known for their beauty; as such I've seen people doomposting that western beauty standards are drag queens with tattoos and piercings and shit, but I really think it's a tiny minority that finds those things attractive even though tattoos especially are becoming ubiquitous.

What it's all about is shape relations and proportions, try and simplify the face into shapes that you seewithout too much detail and get the shape relations down so that it kinda looks like a face.

In my case it's the opposite. I like to look at pictures because it gives me an ideas for char design, but I like to touch things even more than look at them, and in imagination it's feeling better (also I more like smooth surfaces than ones covered with folds and bulges). I can watch at picture and feel it's form (maybe it's Vilppu's "form feeling", that's why I started to read The Manual). Maybe I should sculpt with hands instead of drawing but I can't overcome the disgust from slimy sculpting clay. I'm waiting for winter to sculpt cute girls from wet snow.

How do I configure her left leg in this perspective

>> No.6142142

Shape of the face is wrong for one thing, too long and not wide enough around the middle, ears are not tilted with the top leaning outward like in the ref, distances of facial features are wrong with the right eye and mouth/nose wandering off on their own.

Measure more and pay attention to angles before you start throwing down a bunch of stuff.
Distance between the top of the ears is roughly the same as from chin to where the hair is parting.
Eyebrows in the drawing have room for a third one between them while in the ref the distance is maybe 1/3 that, you want to constantly pay attention to distances while you're drawing.
From the top of the ears down to her chin everything is converging to the middle almost like a triangle, while in your drawing it sags down too much looking more like a bowl shape.

Having some perspective trouble. The galleon is supposed to be sitting on the horizon, with the lighthouse shining out towards it. The vertical bit to the right of the lighthouse is going to be a water spout. The lighthouse itself is supposed to be sitting on a cliff face. Realistically the beam of light should be parallel to the face of the water, and the horizon looks off too. Could somebody redline where they would situate the horizon, vanishing point, and beam of light?

Fun With a Pencil: Part 23

Changed it up for this one; did gesture drawings of real people, built them up, and added some shading to help realize the 3d form, hopefully I got the gist of Loomis' emphasis on balance.

Might do this style more often in place of copying more Doohinkus, which I'm not entirely sold on (really easy to mess up angles and proportions). What do you guys think?

>> No.6142748

>>6142722
While I like you're experimenting and applying what you're learning, I think you stick with what Loomis is trying to show you.

Because it's so easy to mess up, it's a good learning experience. So when you're done you're more aware of that kind of thing and can then experiment with what you're doing.

That's just what I think, because so far you have been copying him exactly, no need to shift now when you're almost done.

Thanks for the reply, I was beginning to think no one was going to reply except the anon who suggested the book thread. I don't know where I should go from here.

I attach the reference, I guess the eyes are bigger giving away my own paranoia, ha ha, maybe I made the wrong measurement, I made the measurements with my pencil on the screen, in the drawing the girl looks older, I want to believe thats because the jaw it is longer, about the shoulders, the paper was too small, although the fault is not be the paper but mine.

It would help me a lot if you could tell me what other mistakes, I made that apply to my "skill level", also, maybe this can be a bit pretentious, but I would like to know: what is my current skill level? to know where i stand right now
