6132362 No.6132362 [Reply] [Original]

This is a thread to discuss all kinds of digital drawing hardware: non-display graphics tablets, pen display tablets, portable tablets and more.

If you have any additional questions, ask them.
Remember to ignore all chinese shills.

>I'm thinking of getting the Wacom One, should I buy it?
Fuck off retard. Ask a better question.

Recommended tablets:

>Intuos 3
Best screenless tablet. Look for one on Craigslist or Ebay.
>Intuos 4, 5 & Pro
Also good options. Will burn through your nibs.
>Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 Lite
Budget portable display tablet. Very solid drawing experience with Wacom EMR tech, but a small 10.4" display area.
>Used iPad Pro 2nd Gen 12.9"
Best option for a display tablet.
>Galaxy Tab S7+/S8+
Good premium alternative to an iPad Pro

>Avoid:

>XP-Pen, Huion, Gaomon and every other Chinese brand
Poor build quality, lackluster pens, broken tilt, struggles to register light pressure, horrible customer support and the displays are not calibrated. All Chinese brands are basically the same because they're all centralized. Check out the webm to understand how bad they are. Also watch out, Chinese companies shill HARD on /ic/; they do a lot of samefagging and frequently hurl personal insults.

>Microsoft Surface Pro
The N-Trig digitizer means you will always get wobbly lines.

>Lenovo
Bad drawing performance because they're not designed with art in mind.

>Cintiqs & other desktop display tablets
Overpriced, prone to problems and will lead to back posture issues.

>iPads (brand new)
>iMacs and Macbooks
Never buy this garbage under any circumstance. It's a locked ecosystem with rubbish hardware you can't upgrade.

Yeah it'll take a few weeks before you get used to the disconnect.
Once you get used to it there's a few benefits though. The 2 big ones for me
>posture
you can look straight at your screen instead of down which saves your back in the long run.
>you're hand
once you get used to drawing on the intuos and try going back to trad or a screen tablet, you realize how annoying your hand is and how often its in the way of your drawing.

just keep at it and keep doing sketches, it'll be awhile before its as natural as trad sketching.

I mean, literally EVERYONE before screenless tablets were a thing had their hand obscuring a bit of the drawing, no matter what medium were they using (pencil on paper, ballpen, brush of any kind)
And that didnt stop them from creating beautiful masterpieces.

I don't have access to SAI 2 to try it though, since the only copy of SAI I have was the pirated one I downloaded years ago, it lacks so many things I use in CSP, so I don't bother with it anymore.

>>Intuos 3
>Best screenless tablet. Look for one on Craigslist or Ebay.
Alright so, I was looking for a tablet to replace my XP-Pen, and I've asked for a few threads what /ic/ actually THOUGHT about the Intuos 3 but nobody replied to me. So I couldn't tell if this was a meme or a real thing.

I've had it for a day and my review is as follows:
Despite this thing being old as fuck and obviously used, after cleaning it up (I figure people used tape on it or something) it feels quite nice. The pen feels way more durable than the XP-Pen's I owned previously and the shortcut buttons on the tablet and pen all feel great and function without problem. Sometimes when I click with the pen it'll double-click, and I can't tell if that's an issue with sensitivity or the pen itself.

The software is pretty good, with XP-Pen I was using Pentablet but the Intuos 3's drivers are nice and easy to figure out for a fucking retard like me. An issue I found is that, curiously, pressure sensitivity will not work unless Windows Ink is enabled in the driver, and my art program CSP is set to "Tablet PC" mode.

The two biggest issues I have with the tablet are as follows:
The surface is fucking smooth as shit, there's no bite at all so I feel like I'm lacking a little control. I'll probably tape some paper onto it but my concern is wearing out the nib and I don't think you can replace the nib on a pen like this.
The aspect ratio on the tablet is a lot closer to 4:3 than 16:9 so reducing the active area on the tablet's drawing surface to align with the aspect ratio on my monitor means worse resolution, and I could tell that my lines had just the littlest bit of wave in them. If I finagle with settings I'm sure this could also be remedied.

In general I still think this was an overall upgrade over the XP-Pen even if this is a way older tablet but I'm skeptical it's really the "best" and not just "a pretty good tablet that's extremely cheap used."

Look into Tab S6 Lite (2022 ver.), really good entry android tablet to draw on.

If you prefer a screen tablet then of those I'd go for the Kamvas 16 at that price, the new XP Pen Artist 12 also seems pretty good.

Specifically the software was always just slow straight out the box when I got it. It was and is also prone to crashing. And I got the more powerful model even. I got some nice apps to use on it while it was in tablet mode as opposed to hooked up to the computer and I actually really enjoyed those apps and then I could transfer sketches to any program on my Mac which was nice, if I needed to. Since then it's not even supported anymore and you have to pull some bullshit to update it I guess which I don't care to do because I suck at computers and only have an old MacBook like I said. Basically that but better sounds great but it also seems cumbersome if it's a full windows thing. Even if I could use programs that people enjoy like krita. Maybe an ipad with procreate or a similar app would work just as well for me, then I could send it to Photoshop or whatever but it's not like I could use the iPad hooked up to the actual computer like that anyway which is frustrating. This is why I liked the idea of the hybrid but it just never worked for me.

No, screen size is the only difference. I would suggest trying for a 3rd gen at least, especially if it's for mobile drawing. The 1st gen apple pencil was charged either by sticking it in the ipad's charging port, or with an adapter that let you plug a lightning cable into it.

Cintiq 16 driver question, borrowing my friend's to test it out - for some reason I can draw/use the tablet, but the Wacom Desktop Center doesn't recognize the 16 being connected, saying

"Compatible display device not found"

so I can't change the brightness. I've uninstalled and reinstalled the driver, done the same with a few previous versions of the driver, updated my graphics card, updated my DirectX, and even adjusted my registry so Windows Ink can't get in the way. I'm out of ideas - anybody have

I just don't want my eyes to be blasted by it constantly being on 100% brightness.

Nta but I have one as well. The worst thing about it is the 800:1 contrast ratio, it's just not high enough so you have to check colors and tones on a different monitor thats actually accurate. Aside from that it's a great tablet. I think they fixed that problem with the new 16" tabs but I havent used those so cant vouch for the quality on those.

Can you try different ports, or maybe you have a different computer? Oh, you can also try going into device manager, delete the drivers for all usb hubs only, and then restart the computer. There are other ways to clear your usb device list but windows 10 has a finite amount of usb devices that can be saved at once and every time you plug the same device into a different usb port it counts towards your total. Which is fucking retarded.

There are other ways to clear the usb device list but I think it requires registry edits. Also if you dont trust my advice just look up how to clear usb devices on win 10 you'll find it.

Aside from that, you can try completely uninstalling wacom drivers including the restart and deleting shit left in folders and then reinstall with admin priveleges. If nothing works, maybe something really did fuck up when you flashed the os on there man.

I see
either way I would opt for a chinkshit brand like xp pen or huion over a wacom if you're looking to get into it on a budget. a 7 or 8 inch drawing space is really pretty abysmal, and like I said, will limit you more to drawing with your fingers/wrist, and not so much your elbow/shoulder.

OP is written by a literal retard that probably thinking buying the most expensive tablet will make them a better artist, or they're stuck in 2010 when there was actually a difference in quality. Meanwhile there are a shit load of professionals drawing on huion tablets, and virtually every review on them says they feel basically the same as wacom at this point.

My advice is get a paper and pencil, cut it down to the drawing area of the tablet you're considering, and actually try drawing on it first before dropping any money on a tablet.
