I don't get it either. All you have to do is learn the human figure until you're comfortable with drawing it from imagination.
Then do studies on manga and anime styles you like and learn how to stylize in a japanese way. It only took me like 3 years to make 'authentic' anime and that's from on and off drawing between uni and work. I bet if you use more time for drawing you can get there much faster, much better.

if you cover the face it looks pretty spot on, from there you have the 'its digital' hallmark of screen tones not being used for shading but because the dots are a 'cool' pattern.

and from there, even if thy 100% mimicked manga to a point you couldn't tell, they could never be mistaken for japanese due to the cultural differences in how they act, its honestly interesting and I think there is a 3d animation that a japanese person and a western person did that tried to mimic an asian style and the western one felt very off, but then they tried to make an american feeling one, and the japanese one felt off.

its little mannerisms that you would never notice till pointed out that make all the difference.

The reason why western anime is shit is because the west has redefined aesthetics to be more "inclusive" as opposed to illustrate the idealized super human. The Japanese do not have the constraints from globohomo yet and ironically the Japanese indulge in the aesthetics that the west initially brought from the renaissance. Even the Chinese are proactive in mimicking what used to make the West so sought after in terms of art and even culture. To answer your question it's all about the immersion and if you are immersed in what the globohomo suggests to be beautiful you end up with a stock of disfigured and unappealing designs under the guise of an obese hambeast being called "healthy" and an effeminate male with gyno and stretchmarks all over being called "beautiful"
