IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER OR /INT/ERMEDIATE IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice.
Use this thread instead of making new threads or post in the drawthread with fundamental exercises.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS using one of the following methods:
1. screenshot the image and post that instead
2. change camera capture settings to something smaller
3. send to computer and resize in MSPaint

- Keys to drawing
- Perspective made easy
- Figure - Design and invention
- Pen and Ink

TRY TO BE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK.
When giving feedback, avoid vague "advice" - point what's wrong and try to give the anon you're quoting a clear direction to improve their art (study heads < watch THIS VIDEO about head structure, read THIS SECTION of THIS ARTIST'S BOOK, etc).
You, feedback seeking anon, should also try to be clear and concise when asking for critique/help. When posting your artwork, say what you want help with, and what's your goal with the study/artwork.

focus on getting proportions and positions right, don't actually draw the features out fully until you can place and size them properly. Even if it's just lines to indicate where the nose, eyes, etc are. Once you can do that correctly, then start drawing actual features.

Studies undergoing a shift, probably going to go independent and finally touch some juicy resources I've yet to touch, after skimming what I'm currently on because it mostly falls into life drawing which I'm already doing and prefer.

Going to look at some western classics I also enjoy and finally do some master studies when time permits and of course keep going at growing fundamentals because they're not up to par.

Eventually producing an animated series that me and a couple of friends have been conceptualizing for a year and a bit now. You're psyching yourself out. Left is better, though unless you did both from reference I would say having the reference was likely most of that improvement. If you were trying to study the reference you did a bad job anyway btw, pay attention to things like the curve of the back (which is a big part of the gesture here) and the negative space (like between her arms and thighs). Also the calves in both are too short so that's really something you ought to be aware of and work on.

So here is what looks to be the reference. The archer in the reference has the arrow pressed to her chin, which is causing her head to slightly tilt away from the camera. How do you emulate artist styles? I'm still learning, but my lines always come out the same way, and I can never replicate what I see in front of me. This is my most recent work, and another anon reaffirmed that I needed to work on perspective, angles, and definition.

I'd like to have a more fluid sort of style, and possibly eliminate my sameface, but I don't really have any sort of confidence in my lines. When I trace over something is different to when I try and emulate it. Could someone point me in the right direction towards some resources for this area?

Take my advice with a grain of salt as I'm /beg/ tier

I'd suggest using fewer scratchy lines unless you are trying to show texture - like I assume the grey shawl is hairy? But the leather jacket also comes off hairy because of the scratchy lines

Also, the arms look a little short, and the hands come off a little large.

The feet look a little flat - especially if the character is wearing military boots - again, I'm beg, but I use a little triangle when drawing feet where it meets the leg - it helps me visualize depth

also, I think you can use fewer wrinkles on the clothes - place them just where the joints are, and where the fabric is baggy

neat design though - looks like something out of stalker or fallout

The thing about finishing that bothers me the most is there are so many different ways to do it and each one requires a lot of study and effort to achieve a decent looking result. I don't even know which style I would want to finish it in. Watercolor, cell shading, realistic brushes, whatever else there is. I'm also at the point where my art isn't even great enough that I feel it's worth taking the time to color and shade it all in. I know I'm going to need to do it eventually though. So maybe I'm just finding excuses to put it off. Art really is a lifetime journey if you want to take it seriously.

I think practicing drawing shapes in 3D like cubes, spheres, etc will really help you. You drew the body flat/straight on and mirrored both sides. So even if the proportions were good and the anatomy was decent it would still look awkward. Because rarely does anyone make a character in such a way. Generally you want to show imbalances in weight and tense/loose areas, bending, etc. Also I would definitely practice with 3D objects and mannequins before you start getting too far into clothing, but that's just me.

Its is efficient and matches the style. Much better than my previous paintings in which I would use layers and layers of opacified muddy brushes.

it just looks like some of the proportions are off

excuse the lazy mirror redline here- but from what I can tell the torso doesn't "match" the head size, and as a result everything else feels off, like the length of the legs and size of the feet and hands

breasts don't usually appear so high up on the body too, and obviously your picture here is slightly skewed compared to the mirror image I've drawn here.

But hey that's hard to do - good start keep at it - it's a good pose to test anatomy, but I'd suggest looking at actual references, as it's a very "uncomfortable" pose - like something straight out of a 3D modeling/t-pose esque sorta thing

Actually the arm on the righthand side of both drawings is like that, so it might be an issue that would be solved by flipping the canvas throughout your process, or maybe in both cases you were attempting foreshortening, in which case that's probably the next thing you should work on.

Should I be using a charcoal brush or something for digital gestures? Is it easier to identify mistakes with a thicker brush? The brush I use is really thin, so I'm not quite sure if I can accurately identify any mistakes I may be making. I'm trying to reduce the amount of strokes I make, for instance. It doesn't look that bad to me, but I could be overlooking it because my lines are so thin.

pic related, layers are doubled so they're twice as bold as normal, though I made them smaller; They're usually the size of the page.

>There are lines I didn't actually understand the meaning behind when copying
But there are lines that you did. Most of your brain's processing power is taken up by trying to get your lines accurate, rather than thinking through the forms. That's okay, you'll get better at accuracy and will be able to devote more brainpower to the forms. But you should have at least a rudimentary knowledge of anatomy first. For example, Bridgman tends to draw the inside of the thigh with two c-curves and the outside with one. If you know your anatomy, you know that's because he's indicating the rhythm dictated by the sartorious as it runs along the inside of the thigh between the adductor muscles and the vastus medialis. If you haven't already I would look at some Morpho and some Hampton. Not the anon you were replying to btw.

I've got a technical issue.
So I've got my lineart layer, then my shading layer (flat grey tones with another masked layer where the shading actually is)

Problem is, if I put my flat colors on top of it all and turn on a blending mode, it doesn't show my gray shading because the skin color I'm using is pale/close to white.

Anon... you think you shaded but you didnt. There are no shades. Try actually using three very distinct values (white, grey, very dark grey) to force yourself into actual light mapping like i did here >>6115651 (and dont worry, you can later easily ease up the tones with brightness-contrast-balance filters all drawing apps have so the tones arent so drastically apart in values).

And to answer your question: try different layer modes. Color burn, multiply, add. And not just on the layer with the colors, try changing mode on the layer with the shades and put the color layer under it. And ofc it needs to have the layer with the colors or with the shades to have transparency in it.

I'd say female jaws only need to descend down 1/6th the distance of the loomis ball. Their jaws are actually more straight than males, just with smaller chins.

that is, you only need to add roughly 1/6th of the loomis ball diameter to define a female jawline, and then I like to give them a more vertical brain, whereas male jaws descend further.

You did good for a learner. The arm sizes are wrong, and because you don't do shading, the head size isn't defined making it impossible to correct because you likely keep confusing the side of the face with the back of the head.

Womans hair does start close to the fact and above the ear.

Just move onto your next works, define the size of the body parts before worrying about stuff like hair.

Good post, fully agreed. Most adults work 40 hours a week tops because employers don't like paying overtime and they work only one fulltime (33-40 hour) job. When I was working 60 hours a week I still found time to draw, go hiking and (struggle to) learn music composition. AND shitpost on 4chan and play videogames and drink in the bar daily. It looks pretty good, but you should really include the rest of the shadows to the lips to not make them look too blump (mainly noted in the Asian woman). Speaking of the Asian woman, you should also make the bottom eyelid go up some more, and the black woman's right bottom eyelid should have a curvature on the top. Otherwise, this is pretty accurate.

No but pretty much every head drawing method uses a line to define head size and one for primary direction angle.

My biggest problem with loomis is that the relative position of the features on the circle changes based on the gesture.

I'd say practice referencing the sides of head to memorize the proportions of males vs females. If you memorize the proportions of their heads from the side, it becomes a lot easier to draw them in weird angles.

>> No.6120029

As I said to an anon earlier, you want to go to sideways face references to memorize the proportions as fast as possible.

https://www.google.com/search?q=female+side+of+head

https://www.google.com/search?q=male+side+of+head

then go to images obvs.

The reason I recommend memorizing the exact side profile face proportions is that unless you know their side comparisons, you wont be able to draw a face at a wierd angle properly for hours.

Some examples:
1. Chin isnt forward angled
2. Chin is never actually a triangle
3. Eyewell length is okay, but the brow will be defined
4. Back of skull end just below ears. In your pic the back of the skull is flush with the jawline. IRL the neck goes longer up the back than front due to the trapezius muscle group.
5. Your neck descends after the jawline. If we look at
>>6119926
You can see the jaw itself curves for a bit and then goes vertical to the ear, but there is flesh that is parralel to the deck before descending into the neck. So you want to draw an angled jaw, with a neck portion parallel to the deck until the actual neck begins.
6. Its very important you specify where the eyelids are and where the brow are. Not only are they not parallel here, but the eyes themselves are different sizes.
7. Forshortening an eye is very difficult to do correctly, but at a lot of head angles the eyes won't actually be visibly foreshortened because the change in distance from the camera is extremely minute. Take a look at the difference between the size of the eyes on this woman.
>>6119926

8. It's tempting to not draw the portion of the mouth to the right of her nose because, due to face angle, that would be visibly forshortened, but you need to learn how to angle the forshortened portion of the mouth.
9. The nose and mouth aren't properly aligned, which again, is because you didn't want to draw the right portion of her forshortened mouth
10. The jaw descent angle on to the left of her mouth is incorrect. Shoot for a 25 degree flat descent until the ear, when the jaw then goes verticle.
11. Women are smoothbrains who do have curving foreheads. But you can draw them as uber brains with larger foreheads if you want.
12. The mouth is actually NEVER flat lines. Not from any camera angle. It is bad practice to ever draw mouths as parallel to the deck because they are never visually parallel to the deck.
13. Neck too thin. Remember to draw the traps.

Frankly the reason I can’t do drawabox is that the person running it sounds insane with some of the “rules” he has, like using fine liners (which are impractically expensive where I live, but at least he concedes you can use a ballpoint instead) or not using a sketchbook because keeping a fuckton of loose printer paper in your workspace is somehow supposed to be more practical

I’m doing Loomis and some course I got from NMA instead, and it even has some of the same mark-making exercises that are in the first lesson of drawabox only it doesn’t explicitly tell you to grind them like a lunatic (I get that it’s still good to practice but much of drawabox seems like things you can sum up in a few sentences and just practice on your on rather than needing a whole course for it)

Not that memorizing proportions or doing studies is ever bad, but you don't have to overcomplicate things.

Elf isn't bad for a /beg/ attempt at a low angle on a face, though. I rewatched Hellsing Ultimate recently and I was laughing my ass off at how they wanted dramatic angles but didn't know how to draw under the chin so they'd just stretch the faces down and around so the chin ended at the neck.
